  • E-book markets are currently moving through a period of disequilibrium as new pricing structures (i.e., flat-fee subscriptions) are rapidly embraced by major vendors. On the basis of a novel dataset, we investigate how the availability of "all-you-can-read" pricing programs influences consumers' tariff choice and contract renewal behaviors. Consistent with the rational choice framework, the findings suggest that most e-book consumers significantly gain from subscription-based tariffs. Power readers prefer flat-fee subscriptions, and those that have economically benefited renew their subscription. However, we also find some other intriguing results. Among the three subscription designs examined, the 1-week plan affords consumers more economic benefits than do 1-day or 1-month programs. Finally, iOS users are more inclined to select subscription models than are Android users because of the absence of in-app purchase functionalities for the former. The unavailability of in-app purchase affects tariff choices and transaction patterns as it increases transaction costs.

  • This study seeks to investigate the factors influencing the utilization of online contents subscription services. In this study, the current number of online contents services subscribed to is set as the dependent variable. The independent variables include conspicuous product purchasing tendencies, personality types, experience with online contents consumption, and digital literacy. The research results indicate that digital literacy, agreeableness, and sociability among personality traits, as well as experience with online contents consumption, significantly impact the use of online contents subscription services. However, conspicuous product purchasing tendencies and personality traits such as openness and extroversion did not have a significant effect on the utilization of online contents subscription services.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify what factors have impacts on the amount of YouTube viewing. In doing so, usage type, children's levels of self-control on viewing, parent's perception of media contents, and parental mediation style were investigated by age. The result of the study showed no significant differences of the amount of use by the different age groups. There were, however, significant differences in terms of subscription status(non subscription based vs. subscription-based viewing), level of self-control, perception of content, and parent's mediations (technology, supervision, and guidance). Given the amount of YouTube use, the subscription status and parent's supervision were significantly influential factors for the age group of 3-4 years old. For the age group of 5-6, subscription status, levels of self-control, and mediation of parent's supervision and guidance were influential factors. For the age of 7-9, subscription status, the level of self control, and premium service were significantly influential. Finding similarities and differences in meaningful variables by age group suggests that different strategies should be used to reduce the amount of children's YouTube use. In addition, it raises the need for a more detailed classification of children's YouTube usage methods, which have not been addressed so far, and the need for research on the influence of these methods.

  • Due to the progress of the 4th industrial revolution and the COVID-19 pandemic, the subscription economy was rapidly expanding. In particular, the subscription economy was expected to expand further as the servicing of products(servitization) rapidly progresses. In this study, we tried to empirically analyze the factors that promote and hinder the spread of the subscription economy from the consumer's point of view. To this end, based on the Service Profit Chain (SPC) model, which identified mechanisms leading from quality to satisfaction, loyalty, and performance, a research model was established by combining the framework of the Value-based Adoption Model (VAM), which covers both benefit and sacrifice factors. Usefulness and convenience were derived as benefit factors, and perceived risks and perceived costs were derived as sacrifice factors. The effects of these factors on satisfaction and continuous use intention were analyzed. For empirical analysis, a survey was conducted targeting people who have experience in subscription economy, and 300 effective samples were analyzed. The analysis was performed as a structural equation model using AMOS 24. As a result of the empirical study, it was found that convenience had a significant positive (+) effect on satisfaction. Perceived risk and perceived cost were analyzed to have a negative (-) effect on satisfaction. On the other hand, usefulness was found to have no significant effect on satisfaction. The influences affecting satisfaction were in the order of perceived cost, convenience, and perceived risk. Satisfaction was found to have a significant positive (+) effect on continuous use intention. The results of this study were considered meaningful in that they broadened the horizons of research by combining existing validated models at the academic level and testing their validity, and found that perceived cost was still an important factor at the practical level.

  • Content is now recognized as a key resource to sustain competitive advantage in the OTT market and for e-commerce companies. Coupang is pursuing a content growth strategy to maximize the lock-in effect that binds consumers to the subscription economy and its ecosystem. Given this background, this study aims to explain Coupang's content growth momentum through a case study method and examine Coupang's content strategy in detail. Based on this, this study describes Coupang's content growth strategy in detail and confirms that Coupang differentiates its content from the competition by focusing on sports and low prices to build a lock-in effect in the subscription economy. As a result, we can summarize that the purpose of Coupang's content strategy is to build a lock-in effect for the subscription economy based on content differentiation focused on sports, a bundle strategy linked to e-commerce, and a low-cost strategy. This study contributes to the field of venture creation research by carefully analyzing how Coupang grew from a venture firm to a Decacorn corporation and developed the influence of its content in a completely different industry, and systematically explains the importance of content strategy in strengthening the lock-in effect for the subscription economy. Future research should compare the impact of content strategy of venture and startups in the contents industry to broaden the scope of research in the field and suggest deeper lessons learned.

  • This study is aiming to develop an evaluation model considering electronic journal's properties and terms of subscription. As the first step to develop an evaluation model, this study analyzed features of electronic journals and various terms of subscription through reviewing literature. Second, it developed the evaluation model for electronic journals by using proper evaluation indicators which were extracted from previous studies on the evaluation journals and considering the terms of ScienceDirect subscription. Third, this evaluation model was applied to the 99 journals in the field of mechanical engineering in ScienceDirect. As a result of the evaluation, it was found out that there were variations in the value of journals between in 2000 and 2007. Some implications regarding e-journal subscription were also added.

  • In this study, we investigated the problems of existing e-journal subscriptions caused by open access of e-journals faced by university libraries. To solve these problems, we proposed an operational model for open access based subscription. The proposed operational model, which adapts the four concepts of subscription model, system, policy, and operation interpreted according to reality, applies open access on the premise of rational subscription of electronic journals. The proposed operational model was constructed based on national support, comprehensive operation, open access based model, and cooperation system. In particular, it emphasized the need for stable and continuous access to scholarly information through national support policy. The proposed operational model can be used as a basic data for the realization and research of open access in the domestic environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of the subscription economy on the contemporary art market in terms of creation, consumption and distribution of artwork. To accomplish the aim of this study, we conducted a case study of Artnomic Gallery K borrowing the theoretical perspective from Alexander(2003)'s Modified Cultural Diamond model. In this paper, we collected data through reviewing the secondary document and conducting in-depth interviews with 10 experts and consumers in the art market. As a result, the subscription economy eases the traditional art trade, which is heavily focused on a small number of market arts, by encouraging artists to create various works. The transition to subscription in the purchase of art contributes to lowering the barriers to entry into the art market by reducing the financial burden on consumers in terms of consumption. In terms of distribution, this founding of this article shows that the experts of Gallery K are the main actors in selecting the works that consumers subscribe to. Therefore, in this study, it is of academic significance to discuss that the filtering effect of the distribution system emphasized by Alexander(2003) is effective even in the art trading system to which a new form of economic activity - the subscription economy - is applied.
