  • The purpose of this study is to look into self-concept and teaching anxiety of elementary school teachers about inquiry instruction in science class, and investigate correlations among them. For this study, the survey was carried out on 338 elementary school teachers, and the interview was conducted with 5 of them. The results of this study are as follows; Self-concept of elementary school teachers about inquiry instruction in science class was more positive than usual. And the teachers who were male, older and majored in science education showed more affirmative self-concept about inquiry instruction in science class. Teaching anxiety of elementary school teachers about inquiry instruction in science class was less than usual. And the teachers who were male, older and majored in science education showed less teaching anxiety about inquiry instruction in science class. The correlation of self-concept and teaching anxiety of elementary school teachers about inquiry instruction in science class was an negative interrelation. This presents that the teachers, who have more positive self-concept about inquiry instruction in science class, have less teaching anxiety than those who have more negative one. Consequently, teacher training and retraining programs should be developed and conducted by grasping teachers' self-concept and their anxiety, to reduce anxiety about inquiry instruction in science class.

  • We have examined the perception of teachers and students in elementary schools toward the frontier science and analyzed corresponding contents in science textbooks in Korea and the U. S. in order to promote a good guidance for the frontier science education. We prepared separate questionnaires for teachers and children, respectively, and analyzed the responses obtained from 244 teachers and 1,000 students in five elementary schools. For the analysis of how to introduce the frontier science, we investigated textbooks such as Science, Society and Practical Arts of Korean elementary school, and an American science textbook published by Scott Foresman. This study revealed that teachers are well aware of the importance of the frontier science, however, they are inactive in conducting the subject in class rooms because of their insufficient scientific knowledge and poor environment for teaching. It has been found that children had strong interest in the frontier science, however, opportunities to learn the topic are not properly provided. The frontier science m the American science textbook turned out to be more systematically introduced than that in Korean ones.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate pre-service elementary teachers' belief in science gifted education. To do that, from September to November 2012, this research had been conducted with 42 students who were in the third year of P University of Education. The conclusions of this work are presented as follows: First, the pre-service elementary teachers considered exploration ability to be the most important talent for the gifted students in science, and chose task commitment as the next most important. They regarded intelligent ability and leadership ability as the relatively less important. Secondly, regarding the most important tool in choosing scientifically gifted students, the pre-service elementary teachers preferred creativity test. It was found that they considered the intelligence test and academic achievements, which require intelligent ability, to be the less important. Thirdly, regarding the special knowledge related to science gifted education, the pre-service elementary teachers considered pedagogical knowledge about the gifted to be the most important. Fourthly, regarding a class type for gifted students in science, the pre-service elementary teachers most preferred project learning. Project learning is a learning method in which students choose an interesting problem and solve the problem in cooperation with group members. It is the most widely used exploration class in gifted education. It is in the same context as the result that exploration ability is the most important factor to elementary gifted students in science. This work revealed that, with regard to a talent for the gifted in science, judgment of the gifted in science and science gifted education, the potential ability and affective ability of gifted students are considered to be more important than their intelligent ability. Therefore, it was analyzed that pre-service elementary teachers' belief in the gifted students in science is almost consistent with the recent trend of gifted education.

To examine the effects of question-generating strategy this learning materials were applied to elementary science curriculum, and an experimental group and a control group were selected from $5^{th}$ graders at H elementary school located in Gyeonggi-do. Students were taught for 6 weeks. Control group take traditional lessons and solve questions presented textbook. Question generated group generate questions, solve them and feed back by themselves. The results of this study were found statistically significant difference in the pupil's enhancement of the science academic achievement, scientific attitude (p<.05). Thus question-generating strategy for elementary science inquiry instruction that has a positive effect on interests in class is useful and better be widely applied to science education.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the elementary school teachers' perceptions about the science subject exclusive system. For this study, we developed the questionnaire to investigate teachers' perceptions and 43 elementary school teachers participated in the questionnaire test. And we used participation observation method to investigate characteristics the exclusive elementary science teacher and the elementary school homeroom teacher's science classes. After participation observation, we had interviews with exclusive elementary school science teacher and elementary school homeroom teacher. The results showed that elementary school teachers thought the science subject exclusive system was very necessary. And elementary school teachers thought that the exclusive elementary science teacher had higher professionality about teaching science subject than the homeroom teacher. Then, they expected that the strong points of science subject exclusive system would be some solution to the weak points of homeroom teachers' science classes. We suggested that it must be to enlarge the science subject exclusive system and develope in-service teacher program for the exclusive elementary science teachers.

  • This study is to examine whether elementary science textbooks in Korea and Singapore are applicable to flipped learning. By comparative study we sought to identifying appropriate features of science textbooks for learner-centered teaching. We analyzed text pages on the unit of 'Working of electricity' in Korean elementary science textbook for sixth grade and three chapters of 'Electric circuits, Using electricity, Conductors of electricity' in Singaporean elementary textbook, 'Science : My pals are here!'. We designed evaluating frameworks for science textbooks based on the four pillars of flipped learning. and applied it to 10 elementary teachers evaluate two textbooks. They evaluated textbooks with Likert Scale items and wrote detailed statements and exemplars about their choices. We analyzed the teachers' evaluative descriptions inductively and chose commonly mentioned characteristics. Based on the analysis, we got to the conclusion about specific features of two elementary science textbooks in terms of flexible environment, learning culture, intentional contents, and teachers' expertises. Implications for improving science textbooks towards flipped learning and learner-centered teaching through comparative study were discussed.

  • This study focuses on surveying and examining the beliefs of elementary pre-service and in-service teachers about science and science education. The instrument consisted of 21 items about science and science education on a 5-Likert scale(score range from 1 to 5). The one contained science knowledge and scientific invention, and the other contained science teacher, learning science and science learning and teaching. Data were collected from 76 pre-service and 96 in-service elementary teachers(24 male and 148 female). The elementary pre-service and in-service teachers had higher level belief about that science knowledge should be acquired by sequential scientific process, the beliefs of in-service teachers was more explicit than those of pre-service teachers. They had beliefs to educate learners by providing scientific joyfulness and sequential scientific process. But, in-service teachers had difficulties to perform scientific process-based activities. It is necessary to provide scientific experiences to understand the nature of science in pre-service and in-service programs.
