  • This paper presents the results of experimental and numerical studies conducted to investigate the behavior of exterior reinforced concrete beam column joints (BCJ) strengthened by using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. Twelve reinforced concrete beam-column joints (BCJ) were tested in an experimental program by simulating the joints in seismically deficient old buildings. One group of BCJs was designed to fail in flexure at the BCJ interface, and the second group was designed to ensure joint shear failure. One specimen in each set was -retrofitted with CFRP sheet wrapped diagonally around the joint. The specimens were subjected to both monotonic and cyclic loading up to failure. 3D finite element simulation of the BCJs tested in the experimental program was carried out using the software ABAQUS, adopting the damage plasticity model (CDP) for concrete. The experimental results showed that retrofitting of the shear deficient, BCJs by CFRP sheets enhanced the strength and ductility and the failure mode changed from shear failure in the joints to the desired flexural failure in the beam segment. The FE simulation of BCJs showed a good agreement with the experimental results, which indicated that the CDP model could be used to model the problems of the monotonic and cyclic loading of beam-column reinforced concrete joints.

  • Mechanical components are to be produced with accurate dimensions in order to function properly in assemblies of a machine. Once designs of mechanical components are created, designers examine the designs by adopting many known experimental methods. A primary test method includes stress and strain evaluation of structural parts. In addition, fatigue test and vibration analysis are an important test method for mechanical components. Real experiments at a laboratory are established when products are manufactured. Since design changes should be done before producing the designs in factories, rapid modifications for new designs are required in production industries. FEM simulation is a proper choice for a design evaluation with speed at a detail stage in design process. This research focuses modeling and mechanical simulation of a mechanical component in order to ensure structural safety. In this paper, a universal joint, being used in driving axels of vehicles, is studied as a target component. A design model is created and tested in some ways by using commercial software of FEM. The designed component is being twisted to transmit heavy power and thus, torsional stress should be under strengths of the component's material. The next is fatigue analysis to convince fatigue cycles to be within the endurance limit of the material. Another test is a vibration analysis for rotational components. This research draws final conclusions from these test analyses and recommends whether the designed model is under safety condition in terms of mechanical structure.

  • This paper presents an nonlinear observer scheme for flexible joint robot manipulators. This nonlinear observer scheme is based on the sliding mode method. Sliding controllers have recently been shown to feature excellent robustness and performance properties for specific classes of nonlinear tracking problems. Dynamic equations of flexible joint robot manipulators are derived from the Euler-Lagrange equations by forming the corresponding Lagrangian. Simulation results are presented to show the validness of the proposed nonlinear observer scheme.

  • This articles describes a novel design elastic joint manipulator for a mobile robot, which works in an office environment with humans. The primary goal of this manipulator design is safeness on collision and contact. To achieve this, each joint is made of an elastic element and this is driver with a high ratio gear tram. The performance was verified, however, it has a serious drawback. It produce vibration, due to the elastic joints and high ratio gear train. We found that a sliding mode controller has an excellent performance for reducing such vibration. Results of computer simulation and experiments are shown.

  • In this work, we consider the flexible manipulator system. Generally, the manipulator system may often be made on the base of the imperfect modeling, joint friction, payload change, and external disturbances. These elements are uncertain factors. These uncertainties and flexibility make difficult to control the system. To overcome these defects, a class of robust control law is proposed for the flexible manipulator system and the singular perturbation approach is applied. To show the effectiveness of this control law, simulation is presented for one degree of freedom flexible joint and flexible link system.

  • A neural optimization network is proposed to control the redundant robot manipulators in an environment with the obstacle. The weightings of the network are adjusted by considering both the joint dexterity and the capability of collision avoidance of joint differential motion. The fuzzy rules are proposed to determine the capability of collision avoidance of each joint. To show the validities of the proposed method, computer simulation results are illustrated for the redundant robot of the planner type with three degrees of freedom.

  • A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution. • The use of thick plate in increasing in recent years due to the rapid expansion of chemical plants, nuclear plants, ships and other industrial plants. Welding is the most popular joining techniques employed in manufacturing industrial machineries and structures. Normally, Groove shapes are prepared according to appropriate rules and regulations such as KS, JIS, AWS, LR, DNV and etc. for various thicknesses of plate. However those groove angles tend to be too large. As a result of large groove angle, residual stress, deformation of material and strength reduction is obtained. Therefore, the reliability and safety of structures and machinery tend to be decreasing. Therefore, in this paper, theoretical as well as experimental study are carried out to find optimum groove shapes for T-welded joint of mild steel. The test specimen are made in same condition with simulation model. Welding residual stresses measurement by sectional cutting method. ⅰ) The mechanical difference for change the thickness of plate and groove angle are not appeared. ⅱ) In a mechanical point of view minimum preparation angle(40°) is more suitable than maximum groove angle(60℃). ⅲ) The measurement value and distribution of welding residual stresses are not effected largely by groove angle. It is mechanical restraint that mainly affect welding residual stresses distribution. In mechanical point of view minimum groove angle is more suitable than maximum groove angle. Therefore, it is appropriate to minimize the size of groove shape in strength and safety.

  • This paper deals with the design method for a small waterproof 4-axis robot arm. An extensive analysis was performed on the torque applied to the robot joint as a result of the payload, as well as the design of the joint actuator capacity. In addition, a study was undertaken on the design of a waterproof joint actuator that works at depths greater than 10 m and the wiring design for a small waterproof connector to avoid obstructing the robot motion. Finally, a finite element method simulation was carried out to analyze the strength of the designed robot arm link, and its stability was verified through a simulation test.
