  • The application as the parts of an automobile, using the property of GMT-Sheet, is increasing. In order to exchange the parts of an automobile for GMT-Sheet, at first, the establishment and problem of exact joining strength must be determined. We have studied it using composites which is not same each other fiber oriented condition so as to determine joining strength and joining condition of GMT-Sheet. In this study, the result of experiment of forming condition concerned joining problem of GMT-Sheet is this; joining efficiency of GMT-Sheet, increases as lap joint length L increases. Increase of compression ratio causes decrease of joining efficiency after of GMT-Sheet joining. In the viewpoint of recycling, randomly oriented composite of GMT-Sheet is desirable more than unidirectional oriented composite. We has better design the structure so as not to occur to stress centralization on the joining part.

  • New methods for joining sheet of metal are being sought. One of the most promising methods is MPJ (mechanical press joining). It has been used in thin metal work because of its simple process and relative advantages over other methods, as it requires no fasteners such as bolts or rivets, consumes less energy than welding, and produces less ecological problems than adhesive methods. In this study, the joining process and static behavior of single overlap joints has been investigated. During fixed die type joining process for SPCC plates, the optimal applied punching force was found. The maximum tensile-shear strength of the specimen produced at the optimal punching force was 1.75 kN. The FEM analysis result on the tensile-shear specimen showed the maximum von-Mises stress of 373 MPa under the applied load of 1.7 kN, which is very close to the maximum tensile strength of the SPCC sheet(= 382 MPa). This suggests that the FEM analysis is capable of predicting the maximum tensile load of the joint.

  • For Al 6k21-T4 alloy, linear laser welding produced the lower shear-tensile strength than the base metal. This study improved the shear-tensile strength by using the weaving laser at the optimized welding condition, i.e., 2mm weaving width and 25Hz frequency. The large weaving width increased the weld width, therefore improving the joint strength. For the specimen of low strength, the porosity was distributed continuously along the intersection between the plates and fusion line. However, for the optimized welding condition, large oval-shaped porosities were located only in the advancing track of the concave part. Regardless of the welding condition, solidification cracking was initiated at the intersection and propagated through small porosities in the weld part. furthermore, the concave part had more significant porosity in the weld and HAZ, respectively than the convex part. The continuity of porosities played a key role to determine the strength. And, the weaving width was an important parameter to control the strength.

  • Ag sintering technologies have received great attention as it was applied to the inverter of Tesla's electric vehicle Model III. Ag sinter bonding technology has advantages in heat dissipation design as well as high-temperature stability due to the intrinsic properties of the material, so it is useful for practical use of SiC and GaN devices. This study was carried out to understand the sinter joining temperature effect on the robust Ag sintered joints in air without pressure within 10 min. Electroplated Ag finished Cu dies (3 mm × 3 mm × 2 mm) and substrates (10 mm × 10 mm × 2 mm) were introduced, respectively, and nano Ag paste was applied as a bonding material. The sinter joining process was performed without pressure in air with the bonding temperature as a variable of 175 ℃, 200 ℃, 225 ℃, and 250 ℃. As results, the bonding temperature of 175 ℃ caused 13.21 MPa of die shear strength, and when the bonding temperature was raised to 200 ℃, the bonding strength increased by 157% to 33.99 MPa. When the bonding temperature was increased to 225 ℃, the bonding strength of 46.54 MPa increased by about 37% compared to that of 200 ℃, and even at a bonding temperature of 250 ℃, the bonding strength exceeded 50 MPa. The bonding strength of Ag sinter joints was directly influenced by changes in the necking thickness and interfacial connection ratio. In addition, developments in the morphologies of the joint interface and porous structure have a significant effect on displacement. This study is systematically discussed on the relationship between processing temperatures and bonding strength of Ag sinter joints.

  • The secondary barrier of cargo containment for membrane LNG tank is composed of composite materials such as rigid triplex (rigid secondary barrier, RSB) and flexible triplex (flexible secondary barrier, FSB). RSB and FSB are adhered to each other using an epoxy adherent and the quality of the secondary barrier depends on the bonding strength between them. The bonding strength between RSB and FSB is greatly influenced by the surface condition of RSB prior to joining. In this study, the effect of surface condition prior to joining on the joint strength and the fracture mode occurred between RSB and FSB have been examined in order to establish a proper surface treatment method for improving the bonding strength at the temperature of $-170^{\circ}C$.

  • Resistance spot welding has been widely used in the sheet metal joining processes because of its high productivity and convenience. Recently, automobile industries are trying to replace partly steel sheets with aluminum alloy sheets. Among currently produced aluminum alloys, Al alloy sheets of Al-Mg-Si(6000 series) are being tested. Especially, 6000 series are the most probable substitute in view of strength and weldability. In this paper, an attempt was made to apply resistance spot welding to joining of dissimilar sheet metals (KS6383+SCPZn or KS6383+SHCP). An effort was made to balance heating rate in the Al alloy with that in the steel sheets by increasing electrode tip diameter. Although resistance spot welding of Al alloy sheet and sheet metals does not produce desirable nugget, it proved to have reasonable strength if optimal weld condition is found by tensile-shear strength and fatigue life test. Since spot weld joints in automobile are always experiencing repeated load, spot welding methodology proposed in this paper is found to be not suitable to automobile body manufacturing.

  • In recent years, dissimilar materials such as aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and advanced high strength steel are widely used in automotive body due to environment concerns and fuel consumption. Therefore, joining technology is important for assembling components made of dissimilar materials. In this study, friction stir hole clinching (FSHC) was proposed as a new mechanical joining method to join dissimilar materials. This process stirs and heats the upper sheet, forming mechanical interlocking with the lower sheet. The feasibility of this FSHC process was verified by comparing cross-section of joint in FSHC and hole clinching process under the same processing condition. Taguchi method was also applied to the FSHC process to estimate the effect of process parameters on joint strength and obtain optimal combination of process parameters. Joint strength of FSHC with optimal process condition was compared to that of FSHC with initial process condition as well as that of hole clinching with optimal process condition. Results showed that the FSHC process was useful for joining dissimilar materials, even if the formability of materials was low.

  • In joining Alumina to copper plate by Mo-Mn metallizing process, the effects of the composition of metallizing paste on the bonding strength were investigated. The bonding strength increased with increasing Mn amount in the paste up to 20% but followed by the decrease with addition of Mn. The maximum bonding strength reached 50MPa at 20%Mn when heated to $1550^{\circ}C$ for 60minute. The addition of Si to the metallizing powder increased the bonding strength of the joint by enhancing the mechanical bonding between the Alumina and the metallizing layer due to the decrease of layer viscosity with the addition of $SiO_2$. It is thought that MnO reacted with $Al_2O_3$ to yield $MnAl_2O_4$ spinel, forming a joint.

  • The form-joining process (or clinching) uses a set of die and punch to impose the plastic deformation-induced geometric constraint on a sheet metal pair. The joining strength from the process ranges 50-70 percent of that of the resistance spot welding. In this paper, a new form-joining process with the aid of an adhesive is proposed in which an epoxy adhesive is applied to a sheet metal pair, and before it cures the pair is clinched to cause the geometric constraint in the form of a protrusion. In order to reduce the forming load and the height of protrusions, a new die and punch set with a very small clearance is devised to reduce the depth of drawing and the forming load. Taguchi method is employed to find the optimal values of design parameters. To implement each case of the orthogonal array, the finite element method is used. The experiments show that in the tensile-shear test, the bonding strength of the new form-joining process with an epoxy adhesive is approximately the same as that of the resistance spot welding; and in comparison with the other two form-joining processes with an epoxy adhesive, the height of protrusions is reduced by more than 65 percent and the forming load by 50 percent.
