  • Due to the miniaturization of MEMS and microelectronics the joining techniques also have to be adjusted. The dosing technology with viscous adhesives does not permit reproducible adhesive volumes, which are clearly under a nano-liter. A nano-liter means however a diameter of bonding area within the range of several 100 micrometers. Additional, viscous adhesives need a certain time, until they are cross linked or cured. The problem especially in the MEMS is the initial strength, since it gives the time, which is needed for joining an individual adhesive joint. The time up to the initial strength is with viscous, also with fast curing systems, within the range of seconds until minutes. Until the reach of the initial strength, the micro part must be fixed/held. Without sufficient adjustment/clamping it can come to a shift of the micro parts. Also existing micro adhesive bonding processes are not batch able, i.e. the individual adhesive joints of a micro system must be processed successively. In the context of the WCARP III 2006 now an innovative method is to be presented, how it is possible to solve the existing problems with micro bonding. i.e. a method is presented, which is batch able, possess a minimum joining geometry with some micrometers and is so fast that no problems with the initial strength arise. It is a method, which could revolutionize the sticking technology in the micro system engineering.

  • SPR(Self-Piercing rivet) is mechanical element of joining sheet metal components without the need for pre-punched or pre-drilled holes. Newly designed SPR is developed for high joining strength and shearing strength than semi-tubular rivet. In this study, divided shank of self-piercing rivet were designed for joining DP440 and SILAFONT. Newly designed SPR was simulated by using FEM code DEFORM-3D. In simulations of SPR process, various shape of self-piercing rivet were considered for semi-tubular and newly designed SPR. In other to examine the joinability, joining load and lap-shear load of newly designed SPR were compared with semi-tubular by simulated results and experimental ones.

  • The joining processes of aluminum alloy tubes and polyurethane cores by electromagnetic impulsive compression are studied. The influences of various geometrical factors (the length of joined part, the thickness of tube, and the clearance between tube and core) and the process factors(the discharged energy and the number of discharge)are examined experimentally and discussed. And the magnetic pressure in metal/polymer joining is calculated and is compared to the pressure in metal/metal joining. The following results are obtained: (1) The joining strength is dependent upon the residual radial strain of the polyurethane cores. (2) The joining strength increases as discharged energy and the number of discharge increase, but decreases as the clearance, thickness and joining length of tube increases. (3) In the case of metal/polymer joining energy loss is increased and the value of magnetic pressure is less than that in the case of metal/metal joining.

  • Reaction bonded silicon carbide (RBSiC) is an important engineering ceramic because of its high strength and stability at elevated temperatures, and it is currently fabricated using reasonably cheap manufacturing processes, some of which have been used since the 1960s. However, forming complicated shapes from these materials is difficult because of their poor workability. The purpose of this work is to join the reaction-bonded SiC parts using a preceramic polymer as joint material. The manufacturing of ceramic material in the system Si-O-C from preceramic silicon containing polymers such as polysiloxanes has attained particular interest. The mixtures of preceramic polymer and filler materials, such as SiC, Si and MoSi, were used as a paste for the joining of reaction sintered SiC parts. The joining process during the annealing in Ar atmosphere at $1450^{\circ}C$ were described. The maximum strength of the joints was 63 MPa for the specimen joined with 10 vol.% of $MoSi_2$ and 30 vol.% of SiC as filler materials. Fracture occurred in the joining layer. This indicates that the joining strength is limited by the strength of the joint materials.

  • In the fabrication of joined materials between anodized aluminum alloy and polymer, the performance of the metal-polymer joining is greatly influenced by the chemical properties of the oxide film. In a previous study, the dependence of physical joining strength on the thickness, structure, pore formation, and surface roughness of films formed on aluminum alloys is investigated. In this study, we investigated the effect of silane coupling treatment on the joining strength and sealing performance between aluminum alloy and polymer. After a two-step anodization process with additional treatment by silane, the oxide film with chemically modified nanostructure is strongly bonded to the polymer through physical and chemical reactions. More specifically, after the two-step anodization with silane treatment, the oxide film has a three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure and the silane components are present in combination with hydroxyl groups up to a depth of 150 nm. Accordingly, the joining strength between the polymer and aluminum alloy increases from 29 to 35 MPa, and the helium leak performance increases from 10-2-10-4 to 10-8-10-9 Pa ㎥ s-1.

  • In an attempt to optimize friction spot joining process of Al alloys for automobiles, effects of joining parameters such as tool rotating speed, plunging depth, and joining time on the joints properties were investigated. A wide range of joining conditions could be applied to join Al alloys for automobile without defects in the weld zone except for certain welding conditions with a lower heat input. For sound joints without defects, tensile shear strength of joints was higher than acceptable criteria of tensile shear strength of resistance spot welded joints for aluminum.

  • Self-piercing riveting is an joining method of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) and other dissimilar materials. It has attracted considerable interest from the automotive industry. The SPR has become an interesting alternative joining technique for difficult to weld materials such as steels and aluminium alloys. In this paper, self-piercing rivet and anvil for SPR were designed for the joining conditions with AHSS and aluminium alloy. Various conditions of SPR were simulated for the design of rivets and anvils. The simulated results were in good agreement with experimental ones. As a result, over HV500 rivet is desirable to joint SPFC780 AHSS and aluminum alloy.

  • Joining of $Si_3N_4$ to $Si_3N_4$ with crystallized glass solder was studied. $SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO$ glass with $P_2O_5$ as a crystallizing reagent was used as a solder. To improve the hish temperature toughness of joined specimen, two stage heat treatment was applied to Joined sample for the crystallization of joined layer, Two factors, i.e. thickness of soldered layer and crystallization were taken and thier effects on joining strength were investigated by a SEM-EDX observation of joined interface and bending strength both at room and elevated temperatures. Obtained results are summarized as follows: (1) Nitrogen diffused from $Si_3N_4$ to solder during the Joining process. Average amount of nitrogen in soldered layer depended on the thickness of the soldered layer and increased with decrease of the thickness. (2) Joining strength of the specimen having a thinner soldered layer was stronger than that of thicker layer. This can be mainly attributed to the difference of the nitrogen content in the soldered layer. (3) Higher content of nitrogen in solder brought forth higher viscosity of the solder. Hence the crystallization of the solder become more difficult in thinner layer of the solder than thicker one. (4) Thus, the effect of crystallization was evaluated mostly by the thicker layer specimen. Crystallization of soldered layer improved markedly the fracure strength of joining at higher temperatures than the softening temperature of glass solder.

  • Residual stresses and deformations due to welding have effects on the strength of structures. In this paper, the compressive strength of basic welded structures is studied and the effects of the residual stresses and deformations on the compressive strength of beams, plates and shells are investigated,. Theoretical analysis for the basic structures is carried out and simplified methods to calculate the compressive strength are proposed. The proposed methods yield simple formulas to calculate the compressive strength, of which results are much helpful. The accuracy of the proposed method is revealed by comparison with experimental results.
