The dependence of contractile force for the cardiomyocytes on a different engineered surface (바닥면상태에 따른 심장세포의 수축력 변화)

  • We present a microfabricated three-dimensional (3-D) hybrid biopolymer micro cantilever which can measure the contractile force of cardiomyocytes and analyze the force dependence on different types of surface. To make different conditions of the cell seeding surface, we fabricated the specific type of cantilever which was grooved on the surface. The presented cantilever was facilitated to measure bending of the cantilever and to calculate the contractile force of cardiomyocytes. Also, we demonstrate the dependence of the morphology for the cardiomyocytes seeded on a plain surface and a grooved surface. Finally, we show the dependence of force for the cardiomyocytes on a different surface.

  • 본 연구는 알려진 녹차의 다양한 항산화, 항염 효능이 있는 Polyphenol 류 이외의 생물학적 활성을 가지는 펩타이드 및 당단백질 소재에 대한 특성과 분석을 위하여 연구되었다. 녹차에서 수용성 성분을 추출 후 알콜 침전방법을 사용하여 단백질과 펩타이드류를 분리하여 실험에 사용하였다. 전체 추출물 중에는 Glutamic acid가 14073.9ug/g, (39.11%)로 가장 높게 분석되었으며, GPC 분석결과 Mn 886, Mw 25218, Mp 890, Mw/Mn 28.46으로 분석이 되었으며, 전체적으로 3개의 피크로 분석되었다. 함유된 펩타이드를 분석하기 위하여 HPLC를 이용하여 RT 16.148min의 Fraction을 분리하여 펩타이드 분석결과 녹차에서 유래한 TNTLSN이라는 hexapeptide를 동정하였다. 이러한 펩타이드는 친수성이며, 안정도가 높은 특징을 가지고 있고, 분자량이 1000이하로 피부 흡수도가 높을 것으로 기대되며, Biodegradable하며, Renewable 한 자연 친화적인 화장품 소재로서 널리 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Implementing Medical Education Continuous Quality Improvement Using Design-Based Research (설계기반 연구를 통한 의학교육 Continuous Quality Improvement 운영 경험)

  • The goal of this study is to present efficient measures to improve the quality of medical education through using a developed and applied continuous quality improvement (CQI) model suitable for medical education. To achieve this purpose, we developed a theoretical CQI model through a review of the literature according to the design-based research method. Through repetitive productive cyclical processes and professional reviews, we finally deduced an appropriate CQI model for medical education. The most important results of this study are as follows: First, the CQI model for medical education is defined as a quality management system with a cyclical course of planning, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of medical education. Second, the CQI model for medical education is composed of quality management activities of educational design, work, and evaluation. In addition, each activity has the implementation strategies of planning, doing, checking, and improving based on the PDCA model (Plan-Do-Check-Act model). Third, the CQI model for medical school education is composed of committees related to medical education doing improvement activities, as well as planning, implementing and evaluating it with CQI. As a result, we can improve teaching by using the CQI model for medical education. It is more meaningful because this gives us organized and practical measures of quality management and improvement in medical education as well as in the educational process.

  • 본 논문에서는 동화를 소재로 제작된 캐릭터를 사용하는 액션게임의 개발에 대하여 기술하고 있다. 동화를 소재로 만들어진 캐릭터는 게임의 특징으로써 사람들의 관심을 높여주었고 액션게임에서 타격감을 부과하는 영상, 음향, 체감의 타격감 표현기법 적용하여 액션을 통한 재미요소를 갖춤으로써 독특한 캐릭터가 매력적인 차별화된 액션게임을 개발하였다.

The effect of Saururus chinensis Baill against oxidative damage and inflammation

  • Objectives : ROS are involved in a wide spectrum of diseases including chronic inflammation and cancer. S.chinensis Baill, a perennial herb commonly called Chinese lizard's tail or Sam-baek-cho in Korea, is used for the treatment of edema and inflammatory diseases in the Oriental folk medicine. In this study, we investigated the antioxidant activities and anti-inflammatory effects of the two extracts, water(WE) and ethyl acetate(EAE) from S.chinensis Baill. Methods : Anti-oxidant activity was evaluated using Fe2+ chelating and hydroxyl radical scavenging assay. DNA cleavage assay, and western blot and immunostaining for phospho-p65 were performed to evaluate anti-oxidative effect. Anti-inflammatory effect was performed using NO generation assay and western blot in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cell. Results : In Fe2+ chelating activity and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, WE showed more strong scavenging activity for hydroxyl radical than EAE. WE scavenged hydroxyl radical by 12% at 3.2 ${\mu}g/ml$, 21% at 16 ${\mu}g/ml$, 32% at 80 ${\mu}g/ml$, 66% at 400 ${\mu}g/ml$ and 82% at 2000 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively. In addition, WE showed more strong chelating activity than EAE. WE chelated Fe2+ ion by 1.1% at 3.2 ${\mu}g/ml$, 8.2% at 16 ${\mu}g/ml$, 26.3% at 80 ${\mu}g/ml$, 72% at 400 ${\mu}g/ml$ and 89% at 2000 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Also, WE inhibited oxidative damage via its anti-oxidant activity. In anti-inflammatory effect, EAE inhibited NO production and iNOS expression. In addition EAE suppressed the NF-${\kappa}B$ and MAPK signaling pathway in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Conclusions : Together, these data indicate that S. chinensis Baill, shows anti-oxidant activity and anti-inflammatory effect.

Comparison of Thermal Ablation and Surgery for Low-Risk Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

  • Objective: Although thermal ablation is effective in treating low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMCs), comparison of treatment outcomes between thermal ablation and surgery has not yet been systematically evaluated. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of thermal ablation and surgery for the treatment of low-risk PTMCs. Materials and Methods: Ovid-MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for studies reporting comparisons of treatment results between thermal ablation and surgery for patients with low-risk PTMC published up to April 6, 2020. The analysis evaluated the efficacy (local tumor recurrence, occurrence of new tumor, metastasis, and rescue surgery) and safety (complication rate) of thermal ablation and surgery. Results: This systematic review included four studies with a total of 339 PTMCs in 339 patients who underwent thermal ablation and 320 PTMCs in 314 patients who underwent surgery. There was no local tumor recurrence or distant metastasis in either group. There was no significant difference in the pooled proportion of lymph node metastasis (2.6% with thermal ablation vs. 3.3% with surgery, p = 0.65), occurrence of new tumors (1.4% with thermal ablation vs. 1.3% with surgery, p = 0.85), or rescue surgery (2.6% with thermal ablation vs. 1.6% with surgery, p = 0.62). However, the pooled complication rate was significantly higher in the surgery group than in the ablation group (3.3% with thermal ablation vs. 7.8% with surgery, p = 0.03). Conclusion: Both thermal ablation and surgery are effective and safe options for the management of low-risk PTMCs, with thermal ablation achieving a lower complication rate. Therefore, thermal ablation may be considered as an alternative treatment option for low-risk PTMC in patients who refuse surgery and active surveillance or are ineligible for surgery.

  • High concentration of cholesterol in the blood streams of humans has been recognized as a risk factor in the coronary heart disease. Recently, lactobacilli having high bile salt hydrolase activity have been claimed to decrease the concentration of the blood stream cholesterol in humans. In particular, many studies have been reported on the hypocholesterolemic effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus, a normal component of the microflora of the small intestine. Bile salts are excreted as bile into duodenum in the form of N-acyl compounds conjugated with glyine or taurine. Bile excretion is the major route of eliminating cholesterol from the body as well as one of the important pathways of cholesterol metabolism. Since conjugated bile salts are necessary to emulsify cholesterol, deconjugation of bile salts by lactobacilli could decrease intestinal absorption of cholesterol. Free bile salts as well as cholesterol are less soluble than the conjugated bile salts. Therefore, few free bile salts and cholesterol are absorbed through the enterohepatic circulation and most of them are easily excreted via feces. Thus, serum cholesterol could be removed from the body pool by synthesizing new conjugated bile salts to replace the excreted ones.

  • It is important to guarantee the safety of vehicle to minimize the damage to the driver in case of the accidents. In order to inspect and later enhance the safety of vehicle, the owner of the vehicle usually have a vehicle safety inspection. The Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA) issues the Comprehensive Performance Inspection Certificate after vehicle inspection. The certificate only specify the legal inspection criteria for safety and measured values of the safety parameters, however, as ordinary driver in lack of expert knowledge about the vehicle is difficult to understand the contents of the Certificate. Thus, in this paper, the authors try to give the information about the inspection results in easier way to understand. This information not only guarantees the owner of the vehicle to better understand the inspection results, but it also gives the opportunity to the driver to deal with the specific problem listed in the results. The methods in this paper are to transform the vehicle inspection data into the non parametric distribution to easily represent the values to the index later on. Also, example indexes are presented to the actually inspected vehicle based on the reference distribution to show the better assessment of the developed method.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of vinegar on the solubility of 3 types of calcium. After solubilized, total acidity and calcium content were increased as initial acid and calcium concentration increased. Addition of vinegar resulted in pH decrement while total acidity increment. Calcium content in seaweed calcium and calcium carbonate were higher than that in nano calcium. Saturated concentration of seaweed calcium and calcium carbonate were $7.0\%$ (w/v) and $6.0\%$ (w/v), respectively, in vinegar and calcium content were $2,234\;mg\%$ and $2,490\;mg\%$, respectively.

  • As an Accident data recorder (ADR) is a system to record a vehicle's status and dynamics information on the before and after of accident, Traffic accident investigation agencies and parts developers have a lot of interest to analyze an accident objectively and develop automotive safety devices by using real accident data, This study is to analyze an accident objectively and scientifically on the basis of traffic accident reconstruction with the use of output data of an event data recorder. This study is conducted double lane change test six times and slalom test one time as a field driving test and simulation. Based on the vehicle speed, the longitudinal and transverse acceleration, steering angle, driving path, and other kinds of information obtained from the field driving test, this study performed a simulation with PC-Crash program of reenacting and analyzing a traffic accident. The simulation was performed twice in the acceleration-steering angle input method and in the acceleration-driving path input method. By comparing the result of the field driving test with the results of the two simulations, we drew an analysis method with the optimal path reconstruction.
