  • The instantaneous flow characteristics of a round jet issuing normally into a crossflow has been studied using a flow visualization technique and particle image velocimetry. The effects of parameters such as jet inflow profile and turbulence intensity of the jet are evaluated for various Reynolds numbers in range between 735 and 3150, which are based on the crossflow velocity and jet-pipe diameter. The jet-to-crossflow velocity ratio is fixed at the value of 3.3. Instantaneous later tomographic images of the symmetry plane of the crossflow jet show that there exist very different natures in the flow structures of the near-field of the jet even though the velocity ratio is same. It is found that when the turbulence intensity of jet is elevated, the shear layer becomes much thicker due to the strong entrainment of the ambient fluid by turbulent interaction between the jet and crossflow. The detailed characteristics of instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields are presented to illustrate the effects of the above parameters on the vertical structures of the crossflow jet.

  • The present study is aiming at improving the performance of main nozzle of an air jet loom with a modified reed and auxiliary nozzles. The double coaxial pipe jets consisting of a central air jet and an annular air jet have been experimentally investigated. The duter jet has a potential core and a constant velocity. The inner jet through an inner long pipe is induced by the subatmospheric pressure near the inner nozzle edge, and the jet velocity of an inner pipe is always lower than that of a outer pipe. The static pressures of the main nozzle over a wide range of the nozzle tank pressure were measured, and the nozzle velocity and Mach numbers were analytically calculated. Experiment81 results indicate that the critical condition of Mach number of unity to occur at the two positions in a main nozzle; one of them is the needle tip and the other is the acceleration tube exit An increase in the tank pressure causes the critical throat condition to occur at the two positions above. The velocity of acceleration-tube exit is maximum at the critical length L* and flow patter in acceleration-tube over critical lengh remains unstable.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of forcing amplitude on the flow structure near the nozzle exit of forced jet diffusion flames. The jet was excited up to the blowout occurrence by a considerable large amplitude with a periodic velocity fluctuation at the tube resonating frequency. In the attached flame regime, we disclosed the very interesting result newly that adding of a moderate forcing amplitude caused the jet flame to become longer in spite of being forced. Particular attention is focused on the turnabout mechanism of vortex roll-up around the elongated flame, which has not been reported previously, and on the inner coherent structure of the forced jet in the attached flame regime. From the velocity and flow visualization results, it was ascertained that the surrounding air due to the occurrence of negative velocity parts was suck into the fuel nozzle. To aid in understanding the rotating phenomenon of coherent structure, we present a schematic diagram of the turnabout mechanism of vortex roll-up. The mechanism of vortex turnabout phenomenon can be easily understood by considering the positive and negative velocity amplitudes about the instantaneous velocity of the forcing flow, as shown in this diagram.

  • To reveal the newly found liftoff height behavior of hydrogen jet, we have experimentally studied the stabilization mechanism of turbulent, lifted jet flames in a non-premixed condition. The objectives of the present research are to report the phenomenon of a liftoff height decreasing as increasing fuel velocity, to analyse the flame structure and behavior of the lifted jet, and to explain the mechanisms of flame stability in hydrogen turbulent non-premixed jet flames. The velocity of hydrogen was varied from 100 to 300m/s and a coaxial air velocity was fixed at 16m/s with a coflow air less than 0.1m/s. For the simultaneous measurement of velocity field and reaction zone, PIV and OH PLIF technique was used with two Nd:Yag lasers and CCD cameras. As results, it has been found that the stabilization of lifted hydrogen diffusion flames is related with a turbulent intensity, which means that combustion occurs at the point where the local flow velocity is balanced with the turbulent flame propagation velocity.

  • Decays of the ceiling jet front velocity under a circular ceiling are investigated. To simulate the ceiling jet in fires He and $N_2$gas were injected from a nozzle to the center of the ceiling. The jet fronts in the form of turbulent eddies were traced by a high-speed camera system. The instantaneous locations of the front were obtained from visual readings of visualized front, and the radial velocity was calculated from the information of the time and the location with respect to the front. The similarity and dimensional analysis were also carried out to reveal the relationship between the velocity decay and the radial distance. It was shown that the radial velocity of the front was inversely proportional to the radial distance in the fully developed region from the experimental results and the theoretical analysis.

  • In this study the mixing process of two-phase flow which makes two jets existing vlocity difference are analyzed. The primary jet is jetted on the condition of the state mixed pulverized solid pariticle with air and the velocity in the secondary jet is changed into three kinds velocities(0.60, 75m/s) The velocity vector field concentration field and turbulent properties of solid particles are measured by using 3-Dimensional Particles Dynamics Analyzer. As the velocity of secondary jet increases the solid particle recirculation zone becomes larger. Also solid particle concentration gets dense due to velocity decrement of particles.

  • PIV experiments were carried out to visualize the velocity distribution of the sweeping jet impinging onto a flat plate and kinematic behavior of the jet from the fluidic oscillator. Two parameters such as four different Re cases and four different jet-to-wall distances were examined. Time-resolved two dimensional PIV measurements were performed for both streamwise and normal planes respect to the jet axis. Ensemble averaged and phase averaged velocity fields were obtained for the tested range of parameters. The sweeping frequency of the jet increases linearly with increase of Re. The kinetic energy of the sweeping jet decreases as the distance from the jet to the impinging plate increases. In addition, turbulence flow is generated due to the swinging motion of sweeping jet, and various vortices such as primary and secondary vortex are observed near the impinging wall.

  • In this paper, the flow characteristics of an axial fan spraying isothermal compact jet in a confined space were investigated by the experimental methods, the numerical method, and the free jet theory According to the results, the numerical result and the experimental result are agreed well qualitatively and different quantitatively within $\pm1.0%$ for the centerline velocity, the entrainment ratio, and the maximum throw. However, the free jet theory can reasonably predict the centerline velocity except the entrainment ratio and the maximum throw. In other words, the entrainment ratio and the maximum throw by 1.he free jet theory are hard to estimate the characteristics of jet because of restriction of c confined space.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate a critical heat flux(CHF) during forced convective subcooled and saturated boiling in free water jet system impinged on a rectangular heated surface. The surface is supplied with subcooled or saturated water through a rectangular jet. Experimental parameters studied are a width of heated surface, a height of supplementary water and a degree of subcooling. Incipient boiling point is observed in the temperature of 6${\~}8^{\circ}C$ of superheat of test specimen. CHF depends on jet velocity for various boiling-involved coolant system. CHF also is proportional to the nozzle exit velocity to the power of n, where n is 0.55 and 0.8 for subcooled and saturated boiling, respectively. CHF is enhanced with a higher jet velocity, higher degree of subcooling and smaller width of a heated surface.

  • This study focuses on the near-field vortical structure and dynamics of coaxial jets. The characteristics of laminar flow and mixing in coaxial jets are investigated using a unsteady flow simulation. In order to analyze the geometric effects on the vortical structure, several cases of different configurations are selected for various values of the velocity ratio of inner jet to outer jet. From the result, it is confirmed that the flow mixing is promoted by the development of vortical structure and the interaction between inner jet and outer jet. This feature is strongly related to the vortex frequency in the shear-layers. The vortex frequency depends on the velocity ratio and the lip thickness of inner nozzle, but the outer pipe length has no effect on the frequency variation.
