This study focuses on the near-field vortical structure and dynamics of coaxial jets. The characteristics of laminar flow and mixing in coaxial jets are investigated using a unsteady flow simulation. In order to analyze the geometric effects on the vortical structure, several cases of different configurations are selected for various values of the velocity ratio of inner jet to outer jet. From the result, it is confirmed that the flow mixing is promoted by the development of vortical structure and the interaction between inner jet and outer jet. This feature is strongly related to the vortex frequency in the shear-layers. The vortex frequency depends on the velocity ratio and the lip thickness of inner nozzle, but the outer pipe length has no effect on the frequency variation.

The gas jet pumps serve to preduce a vacuum or can be used as gas jet compressors. These are operated on the same principle as a steam jet vacuum pump : in the driving nozzle the pressure energy of the motive medium is converted into the kinetic energy. In the diffuser the driving jet mixes with the suction medium and the kinetic energy is reconverted into the pressure enegy. The application fields of gas jet ejectors are the evacuation of siphoning installations, the elevation of liquids, the production of vacuum filters, the vacuum supporting airlift system, the evacuation of the suction line of centrifugal pumps and the ventilation of the dangerous gases to the atmosphere. The performance of gas jet ejector is influenced strongly to velocity coefficient of motive nozzle, the distance between the motive outlet to the diffuser inlet and the dimensions of diffuser. This study is performed for the computer aided design of gas jet ejectors in future. Through the present experiments, it is known that the velocity coefficient of the motive air nozzle ranges from 0.91 to 0.95 and the maximum efficiency of gas jet ejector is 24.6%.
The planar laminar impingement jet with a confinement plate has been studied numerically. Discretzing the convection term with the QUICKER scheme, the full Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow were solved using the well known SIMPLER algorithm. The flow characteristics with Reynolds number and jet exit velocity profile effects on it were considered for H=3, Re=200 - 2000. Results show that vortical flow forms in turn along the confinement and impingement plates as the Reynolds number increases and such a complicated flow pattern has never been reported prior. The jet exit velocity profile is shown to do an important role in determining the position of vortex flow and its size as well as in stagnation and wall jet flow region. Parabolic jet exit profile results in peak of skin friction 1.4-1.6 times greater than that of uniform profile. The channel height effects are also studied and shown to have an effect on flow pattern similar to that of Reynolds number. Also shown is that effects of the jet exit velocity profile becomes less significant over a certain channel height.
Spiral jet is characterized by a wide region of the free vortex flow with a steep axial velocity gradient, while swirl jet is largely governed by the forced vortex flow and has a very low axial velocity at the jet axis. However, detailed generation mechanism of spiral flow components is not well understood, although the spiral jet is extensively applied in a variety of industrial field. In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of convergent nozzle. The objective of the present study is to understand the flow characteristics of the spiral jet, using a computational method. A finite volume scheme is used to solve 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The computational results are validated by the previous experimental data. It is found that the spiral jet is generated by coanda effect at the inlet of the convergent nozzle and its fundamental features are dependent the pressure ratio of the radial flow through the annular slit and the coanda wall curvature.
This paper presents flow characteristics of a sweeping jet issued by a feedback-free fluidic oscillator. Overall flow characteristics of feedback-free sweeping jet (FFSJ) were analyzed using flow visualization. The feedback-free sweeping jet has a sinusoidal external flow pattern. The oscillating frequency of the FFSJ is three times higher than that of a conventional sweeping jet at the same Reynolds number. Flow structure and turbulence characteristics were investigated using time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV). In instantaneous velocity fields, the flow did not stay at ends but changed the direction continuously in contrast to the conventional sweeping jet. Velocity distributions at each plane which were extracted from mean velocity field has Gaussian distribution, which is similar with a circular jet. The sweep angles were constant as 45° at all Reynolds numbers in the high flow rate regime.
This study investigated heat transfer and flow characteristics of a sweeping jet issued from a rectangular nozzle with a thin plate. A thin vertical aluminum plate was attached on outlet of fluidic oscillator to increase velocity of central area with Coanda effect and enhance heat transfer performance. From visualization and PIV experiments, sweeping jet with a thin plate has larger velocity distribution in center region than that of the normal sweeping jet while oscillating frequency is similar as the normal one. Thermographic phosphor thermometry method was used to visualize the temperature field and Nu distribution of plate with impinging sweeping jet with thin plate. Four Reynolds numbers and three jet-to-wall distances were selected as parameters. It is found that heat transfer performance in the low jet-to-wall spacing was enhanced as the cooled area was expanded. However, when the jet-to-wall spacing became greater than 8dh, heat transfer performance became similar due to reduced impinging velocity.
The turbulent structures of the free plane jet and two dimensional impinging jet are investigated experimentally. In order to get the two dimensional jet, the contour of the cubic equation suggested by Morel is used for a contracting nozzle. A linearized constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer is used for measurement. Mean velocities and turbulent intensities are measured along the centerline of the jet. Jet halp width spatial double velocity correlation coefficients and integral length scales are obtained. It is established that the free plane jet is truly self-preserving about 40 slot widths downstream of the nozzle. The experiments for the impinging jet are carried out at four different impingement wall locations within the self-preserving region of the free plane jet, and comparing the results with that of free plane jet, the mean velocity is changed in the region of 0.25H and turbulent intensities are affected in the region of 0.2H from the wall, respectively, where H means the distance between the nozzle exit and the wall.
The motion of 3C 120 Jet relative to the core is reasonably uniform and the VLBI scale jet connects outwards to a VLA ~ 100kpc scale. We measured the jet width variation from the center and found some indication of a power law which indicates the jet expands roughly with a constant opening angle and a constant flow velocity, $V_{f}{\cong}c$, from subparsec scales to ~ 100 kpc. With such a constant flow velocity and based on other physical parameters deduced from observed emission characteristics of the jet, we have established an equipartition jet model which might accommodate the basic parameters of the jet on subparsec scales, with which one can fit the radio intensities over all the scale of the jet even to ~100 kpc.
An experiment was performed to investigate lift-off, blow-off and combustion characteristics of a lifted coaxial diffusion flame according to fuel jet and air velocity. A jet diffusion flame which is attached on the nozzle rim begins to be lifted with increase of air velocity, and finally becomes blow-off at higher air velocity. In experiment, blow-off limit increased with increase of fuel jet velocity, however lift-off occurred at lower air velocity. Flame structure and combustion characteristics were examined by schlieren photos, temperature distributions and emission concentration distributions. Flame temperature became higher at midstream and its RMS became larger at up and downstream with increase of air velocity. Local NO concentration decreased but $CO_2$concentration increased with increase of air velocity, which shows combustion reaction becomes close to be stoichiometric at higher air velocity in spite of lift-off.
The most important factor for the penetration performance of shaped charge is the liner design. By designing the liner to have properties of both high jet tip velocity and long jet break-up time, the better penetration performance could be acquired. Usually it is very difficult to satisfy above two conditions simultaneously. In this study, the liner with the shape of ogive was developed to have relatively larger jet mass compared to the conventional trumpet liner. The designed shaped charge showed jet properties with high jet tip velocity and long jet break-up time by using ogive liner and wave shaper. A commercially available hydro-dynamic code AUTODYN-2D was used for numerical analysis of jet formation. The flash X-ray test and the static penetration test were conducted to verify the results of numerical analysis.
