Various vortical structures are investigated by using three kinds of flow visualization methods in branch pipe flows. There are two typical flow patterns when a jet from the branch pipe with various angles is injected to the main pipe cross flow. The velocity range of cross flow of the main pipe is 0.2 m/s ~ 1.2 m/s and the corresponding Reynolds number, R$_{p}$ is of the range 1.5 * 10$^{3}$ ~ 9.02 * 10$^{3}$. The velocity ratio(R), jet velocity/cross flow velocity, is chosen from 1.3 to 4. The subsequent behavior and development of the ring vortices which are created at the jet boundary mainly depend on the velocity ratio. An empirical relation for the shedding frequency of the ring vortices is derived. It is also found that there are two different vortex shedding mechanism in the mixing of two fluid streams.s.

The flow characteristics of a turbulent buoyant jet were experimentally investigated using a single-frame PIV system. The Reynolds number based on the nozzle exit velocity and nozzle diameter was about Re=5$\times$10$^3$. The instantaneous velocity fields in the streamwise plane passing the jet axis were measured in the near field X/D <11 with and without the temperature gradient. By ensemble averaging the instantaneous velocity fields, the spatial distributions of mean velocity, vorticity, and higher-order statistics up to third order were obtained. The temperature difference of 10$\^{C}$ does not affect a significant influence to the flow structure in the near field, but the total entrainment rate is increased slightly. The entrainment rate shows a linear variation with the streamwise distance in the region after X/D=5.0.
The present study investigates the heat transfer characteristics on concave surface with array impinging jet and fin arrangement. The heat transfer coefficients was measured by TLC method. The Reynolds number based on jet hole diameter is 10,000 and hole diameter-to-plate distance ratio (H/d) is fixed at 2. The rectangular fins are installed in the curved channel and the width of fin varies from 1d to 3d. Without fins, the averaged heat transfer coefficients decreases as moves downstream region. While, the rectangular fins block the crossflow and higher heat transfer rates were observed compared to smooth channel.

Water jet impingement cooling is used to remove heat from high-temperature surfaces such as hot steel plates in the steel manufacturing process (thermo-mechanical cooling process; TMCP). In those processes, uniform cooling is the most critical factor to ensure high strength steel and good quality. In this study, experiments are performed to measure the heat transfer coefficient together with the inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP) analysis for a plate cooled by planar water jet. In the inverse heat transfer analysis, spatial and temporal variations of heat transfer coefficient, with no information regarding its functional form, are determined by employing the conjugate gradient method with an adjoint problem. To estimate the two dimensional distribution of heat transfer coefficient and heat flux for planar waterjet cooling, eight thermo-couple are installed inside the plate. The results show that heat transfer coefficient is approximately uniform in the span-wise direction in the early stage of cooling. In the later stage where the forced-convection effect is important, the heat transfer coefficient becomes larger in the edge region. The surface temperature vs. heat flux characteristics are also investigated for the entire boiling regimes. In addition, the heat transfer rate for the two different plate geometries are compared at the same Reynolds number.

The purpose of this study was experimentally to investigate the disintegration process and disintegration mechanism when co-axial air flows vertically for the longest smooth liquid jet. These were affected by liquid velocity, air velocity, air-to-liquid diameter ratio, nozzle shape, and air-liquid contacting position. That is, this process of disintegration of the liquid jet was similar to that occurred when liquid pressure was increased. At Reynolds number of 10, 000 and below, the changes in the breakup length represent different tendency according to liquid flow rate. The influence of air flow on the disintegration of liquid jet was different according to air-to-liquid diameter ratio, air orifice diameter, nozzle shape and contacting position of liquid and air. In particular, when the tip of liquid nozzle was inside the air orifice, the effect of air flow was the larger than outside the air orifice. The effect of liquid mass flow rate on the change rate of the breakup length was also different.

The local Nusselt numbers have been measured for a round turbulent jet impinging on the concave surface with and without rib. Liquid crystal/transient method was used to determine the Nusselt number distributions along the surface. The temperature on the surface was measured using liquid crystal and a digital color image processing system. The experiments were made for the jet Reynolds number (Re) 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance (L/d) from 4 to 10, the dimensionless surface curvature (d/D) 0.056, and the rib type (height ($d_1$) 0.2 cm, pitch (p) from 1.2 to 3.2 cm). It was founded that only when $L/d{\geq}6$, the average Nusselt numbers on the concave surface with rib are higher than those without rib, mainly due to an increase in the turbulent intensity caused by the effect of rib attached to the wall surface. It was realized that the rib attached to the concave surface may no longer enhance the heat transfer rate or even lowers it depending on the rib type and flow conditions. In addition, the results by the steady-state method using the gold-film Intrex were in good agreement with those by the transient shroud method.
Single-orifice plate is wildly utilized in the piping system of the nuclear power plant to throttle and depressurize the fluid of the pipeline. The cavitation induced by the single-orifice plate may cause some serious vibration of the pipeline. This study aims to find the optimal designs of the single-orifice plates that may have weak cavitation possibilities. For this purpose, a new single-orifice plate with a convergent-flat-divergent hole was modeled, a multi-objective optimization method was proposed to optimize the shape of a single-orifice plate, while computational fluid dynamics method was adopted to obtain the fluid physical quantities. The reciprocal cavitation number and the developmental integral were treated as cavitation indexes (e.g., objectives for the optimization algorithm). Two non-dominant designs ultimately achieved illustrated obvious reduction in the cavitation indexes at a Reynolds number Re = 1 ×105 defined based on fluid velocity. Besides, the sensitivity analysis and temperature effects were also performed. The results indicated that the convergent angle of the single-orifice plate dominants the cavitation behavior globally. The optimal designs of single-orifice plates result in lower downstream jet areas and lower upstream pressure. For a constant Reynolds number, the higher temperature of liquid water, the easier it is to undergo cavitation. Whereas there is a diametric phenomenon for a constant fluid velocity. Moreover, the regression models were carried out to establish the mathematical relation between temperature and cavitation indexes.
This paper presents a numerical study on tip vortex cavitation inception predictions based on non-spherical bubble dynamics including splitting and jet noise emission. A brief summary of the numerical method and its validation against a laboratory experiment are presented. The behavior of bubble nuclei is studied in a tip vortex flow field at two Reynolds numbers, provided by a viscous flow solver. The bubble behavior is simulated by an axisymmetric potential flow solver with the effect of surrounding viscous flow taken into account using one way coupling. The effects of bubble nucleus size and Reynolds number are studied. An effort to model the bubble splitting at lower cavitation numbers is also described.

In the present study, the structure and the characteristics of gaseous premixed flame impinging normal to the flat plate have been investigated experimentally. For the examination of the heat transfer and combustion characteristics, measurements of temperature, direct and schlieren photography were performed. The results of present study show that the length of inner flame becomes smaller as distance from nozzle exit to plate decrease. The width of flame becomes larger as air-fuel ratio decreases. The smaller Reynolds number at nozzle exit and the smaller distance from nozzle exit to plate lead to the higher heat transfer rate in the region of center of plate. As the air-fuel ratio decreases, the heat transfer at plate with moderate rate occurs on wide region.
EINOx scaling for $H_2/CO$ non-premixed turbulent jet flame was conducted. NOx concentration and flame length were measured simultaneously with varying flow conditions. Flame length increases with Reynolds number which means the flames in buoyancy-momentum transition region. We assessed the previous Chen & Driscoll's scaling with present results. However, the scaling cannot satisfy the present results. We proposed new scaling which is addressed the simplified flame residence time. The new scaling satisfies the results of $H_2/CO$ syngas flame as well as pure hydrogen flames.
