This paper describes the boiling heat transfer phenomena to be divided into three regions, nonboiling, nucleate boiling and burn-out in the impinging subcooled water jet system. In the nonboiling region, Nusselt number is a function of Prandtl number, Reynolds number and ${\Delta}T_{sub}/T_{ast}$ In the nucleate boiling region, the heat flux increases with increment of the nozzle exit velocity. But the degree of liquid subcooling does not affect the shape of the nucleate boilng curve. The dimensionless correlations can be expressed in the form of $q{\ell}/K_f{\Delta}T_{ast}=C(Bo{\cdot}C_p{\cdot}{\Delta}T_{sat}/Vo^2)^m{\cdot}(Re/We)^n$. The burn-out heat flux increases linearly with increment of the nozzle exit velocity, but independs of degree of subcooling and the supplementary water height.

The effects of concave hemispherical surface curvature on the local heat transfer from a turbulent round impinging jet were experimentally investigated. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation on the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystals for the measurement of the surface temperature. The Reynolds number ranges from Re=11,000 to 50,000, the nozzle-to- surface distance from L/d=2 to 10, and the surface curvature from D/d=6 to 12.The present results are also compared to those for the flat plate case. In the experiment, the local Nusselt numbers tend to increase in all regions with an increasing surface curvature. The maximum Nusselt number for all Reynolds numbers occurred at L/d .ident. 6 and a second maximum in the Nusselt number occurred at R/d .ident. 2 for both Re=23,000 and Re=50,000 in the case of L/d=2 and for Re=50,000 only in the case of L/d=4. Meanwhile, as the surface curvature increases, the value of the secondary maximum Nusselt number decreases. All the other cases exhibit monotonically decreasing values of the Nusselt number along the curved surface. The stagnation point Nusselt numbers are well correlated with Re, L/d, and D/d.

Measurements of mean velocity and turbulence characteristics are obtained with a linearized constant temperature hot-wire anemometer in a two-dimensional turbulent jet discharging parallel to a flate. Wall static pressure distribution is also measure. The Reynolds number based on the jet nozzle width (D) is about 42,000 and the step height is 2.5D. The reattachment length is found to be 7.5D by using both wool tuft and oil methods. Upstream of the reattachment point, there exist double coherent structures and mean velocity, Reynolds stresses and triple product profiles are asymmetric about jet center line due to the influence of streamline curvature and recirculating flow region. Near the reattachment point, wall static pressure and turbulence quantities change its shape rapidly because of the large eddies by the solid wall. Especially, turbulence intensity has a maximum value in the reattachment regin, then decreases slowly in the redeveloping wall jet ragion. Downstream of X/D=14, a single large scale eddy structure is formed. Far downstream affer the reattachment(X/D.geq.18) mean velocity profile, the decay of maximum velocity and the variation of jet half width are nearly similar to those of plane wall jet, but the Reynolds stresses are higher than those of the latter.

An axisymmetric supersonic jet is simulated at a Mach number of 1.5 and a Reynolds number of $10^5$ to identify the mechanism of sound radiation from the jet. The present simulation is performed based on the high-order accuracy and high-resolution ENO(Essentially Non-Oscillatory) schemes to capture the time-dependent flow structure representing the sound source. In this simulation, optimum expansion jet is selected as a target, where the pressure at nozzle exit is equal to that of the ambient pressure, to see pure shear layer growth without effect of change in jet cross section due to expansion or shock wave generated at nozzle exit. Shock waves are generated near vortex rings, and discernible pressure waves called Mach wave are radiated in the downstream direction with an angle from the jet axis, which is characteristic of high speed jet noise. Furthermore, vortex roll-up phenomena are observed through the visualization of vorticity contours.

An experimental study on the micro-supersonic jet flow fields has been carried out. A sonic nozzle of 440 ${\mu}m$-exit diameter and a Laval nozzle of 800 ${\mu}m$ exit diameter with the nozzle exit Mach number 2.0 were fabricated by stretching a micro Pyrex glass tube for the present experiments. Schlieren flow visualization and Pitot pressure distribution of the jet flow field were obtained. Representative characteristics of the jet flow fields such as, supersonic length, jet core length, similarity of the velocity field, and jet spreading rates, have been observed. All the results were compared to previous observations of larger supersonic jets of higher Reynolds numbers, and it was found that overall characteristics of the micro supersonic jet are qualitatively similar as those of the higher Reynolds number jets, except the jet core length and the jet spreading rate.

Three-dimensional turbulent structures in the near field of elliptic jet were experimentally investigated by using a three-color, three-component Laser Doppler Velocimeter. The Reynolds number based on the nozzle exit velocity and nozzle equivalent diameter(De) was about 4*10$^{4}$. The turbulent characteristics of a sharp-edged elliptic nozzle with aspect ratio of 2 were analyzed along major and minor axis at X/De=2,3,5,7 and along the centerline up to X/De=14. Quantities measured at each point with the 3-D LDV system were three orthogonal velocity components, turbulent intensity, skewness, flatness, and Reynolds shear stress. The nondimensional mean velocities coincided well with the Schlichting's empirical curve with going downstream. Elliptic jet of AR=2 had two switching points at about X/De=2 and 16. The turbulent intensity along the minor axis was distributed widely than that along the major axis. In the near field, X/De<5, the Reynolds shear stresses of the inner part of the elliptic jet had negative value, which indicated the enhancement of entrainment toward the inner part.

A numerical simulation has been carried out for the jet impinging on a flat plate and a semi-circular concave surface. In this computation finite volume method was employed to solve the full Navier-Stokes equation based on a non-orthogonal coordinate with non staggered variable arrangement. The standard k-.epsilon. turbulent model and low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model(Launder-Sharmar model) with Yap's correction were adapted. The accuracy of the numerical calculations were compared with various experimental data reported in the literature and showed good predictions of centerline velocity decay, wall pressure distribution and skin friction. For the jet impingement on a semi-circular concave surface, potential core length was calculated for two different nozzle(round edged nozzle and rectangular edged nozzle) to consider effects of the nozzle shape. The result showed that round edged nozzle had longer potential core length than rectangular edged nozzle for the same condition. Heat transfer rate along the concave surface with constant heat flux was calculated for various nozzle exit to surface distance(H/B) in the condition of same jet velocity. The maximum local Nusselt number at the stagnation point occurred at H/B = 8 where the centerline turbulent intensity had maximum value. The predicted Nusselt number showed good agreement with the experimental data at the stagnation point. However heat transfer predictions along the downstream were underestimated. This results suggest that the improved turbulence modeling is required.

The effect of nozzle diameter on the local Nusselt number distributions has been investigated for an axisymmetric turbulent jet impinging on the flat plate surface. The flow at the nozzle exit has a fully developed velocity profile. A uniform heat flux boundary condition at the plate surface was created using gold film Intrex. Liquid Crystal was used to measure the plate surface temperature. The experiments were made for the jet Reynolds number (Re) 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle to surface distance (L/d) from 2 to 14, and the nozzle diameter (d) from 1.36 to 3.40 cm. The results show that the Nusselt number at and near the stagnation point increase with an increasing value of the nozzle diameter.

This paper describes the flow characteristics of circular multiple jet investigated by hot-wire anemometry. The nozzle arrays were classified into two cases; 6- or 7-nozzle located circumferentially in equal interval without or with a central jet. The flow field was measured according to the number of nozzles when the Reynolds number based on the nozzle exit is about $10^4$. Mean velocity, Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy were investigated in the downstream of jets. The Tollmien's theory holds for downstream only when a nozzle locates at the center. Jet interaction is influenced due to with or without a center nozzle. In addition, the two-dimensional numerical computation was conducted for 3-nozzle case to obtain the general flow structure near the nozzle exit, which verifies the formation of the recirculation region with captive vortices, that is, the evidence of the interaction between jets.

Measurements of the local heat transfer coefficients on a hemispherically concave surface with a round oblique impinging jet were made. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation of the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystal for the surface temperature measurements. The Reynolds number used was 23,000 and the nozzle -to -jet distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and the jet angle was $\alpha$=0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$and 40$^{\circ}$. In the experiment, the maximum Nusselt number at all region occurred at L/d(equation omitted)6 and Nusselt number decreases as the inclined jet angle increases. For the normal jet the contours of constant Nusselt number are circular and as the jet is inclined closer and closer to the surface the contours become elliptical shape. The decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d> 0(upstream) on a surface curvature are higher than those on a flate plate and the decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d <0(downstream) on a surface curvature are lower than those on a flate plate. And also, the decreasing rate of local Nusselt number distribution at X/d <0(upstream) exhibit lower than with X/d <0(downstream) as jet angle increases. The second maximum Nusselt number occurred at long distance from stagnation point as jet angle increases.
