In this study, we investigated how the performance of a Venturi changes when a hemispherical bump is applied to the divergent part of the Venturi tube and what causes the performance difference. The Venturi-tunnel experiment was conducted in the Reynolds number range of 0.2 × 105 - 1.2 × 105 and cavitation number range of 0.9 - 10. The bump was found to reduce the pressure loss coefficient and increase the discharge coefficient by shortening the cavitation length. The decrease in the cavitation length by the bump was explained by the strengthening of the re-entrant jet. The wake generated from the hemispherical bump seems to increase the adverse pressure gradient on the Venturi surface, thereby strengthening the re-entrant jet.

An Experimental investigation into the effects of the blowing jet type and jet orientation on the aerodynamic characteristics over an elliptic type airfoil is explored. This study is aimed at expanding the data base of blowing jet application in separation control of elliptic airfoil. Present data includes: surface pressure, blowing jet exit velocity measurements and integrated aerodynamic loads. The experiments were performed for an elliptic airfoil at Reynolds number $8.22{\times}10^5$. The improvement of effects of pulsed jet on the increase of aerodynamic characteristics was significant for the post-stall angle. For reduced mass flow rates, pulsed jet allowed considerably higher lift to be generated. The jet orientation also showed dominant parameter on the separation control Positive jet angle delay or avoid separation, whereas negative jet angle promotes it.
The stirred tank reactor is one of the most commonly used devices in industry for achieving mixing and reaction. Here we report on results obtained from the large eddy simulations of flow inside the tank performed using a spectral multi-domain technique. The computations were driven by specifying the impeller-induced flow at the blade tip radius. Stereoscopic PIV measurements (Hill et $al.^{(1)}$) along with the theoretical model of the impeller-induced flow (Yoon et $al.^{(2)}$) were used in defining the impeller-induced flow as superposition of circumferential, jet and tip vortex pair components. Large eddy simulation of flow in a stirred tank was carried out for the three different Reynolds numbers of 4000, 16000 and 64000. The effect of different Reynolds numbers is well observed in both instantaneous and time averaged flow fields. The instantaneous and mean vortex structures are identified by plotting an isosurfaces of swirling strength for all Reynolds numbers. The Reynolds number dependency of the nondimeansional eddy viscosity, resolve scale and subgrid scale dissipations is clearly shown in this study.

The characteristics of the unstable impinging circular jet is investigated based on the frequency characteristics and the sound field of the impinging-tones. Two symmetric modes S1 and S2, associated with low frequency and high frequency respectively, and one helical mode H have been observed. At low speed the S2 mode is dominant and switched by the S1 mode as the speed increases. When the jet speed is high the S1 mode is very active over the impinging distance from half the nozzle diameter to its ten times, while the S2 mode occurs at shorter distance corresponding to stage 2 and 3. The helical mode H seems unstable, likely to be influenced much by the experimental environment, and occurs at relatively high speed with almost the same frequency characteristics as the S2 mode. By estimating the convection speed of the unstable jet, it is found that the ratio of the convection speed to the jet speed decreases with both Strouhal number and Reynolds number and the speed of S2 mode is faster than the Si mode. When the present experimental results are compared with the previous investigations performed for the hole tone and the impinging tone with a small plate, the S1 mode is found to be associated with the ring vortex of large diameter with low speed, but the S2 mode with the vortex of small diameter with high speed. In addition, the frequency is found to be influenced by the nozzle configuration but the characteristics is almost the same. From the impinging distance and frequency range, it can be deduced that S1 mode is related with the jet column mode and S2 mode with the shear mode.

The numerical simulation has been conducted for the investigation of flow and heat transfer characteristics of an oblique impingement jet injected to a flat plate. The finite volume method was used to discretize the governing equations based on the non-orthogonal coordinate with non-staggered variable arrangement. The $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$-ν(sup)'2 turbulence model was employed to consider the consider the anisotropic flow characteristics generated by the impingement jet flow. The predicted results were compared with the experimental data and those of the standard $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The results of the $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$-ν(sup)'2 model showed better agreement with the experimental data than those of the standard $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ model. In order to get the optimum condition, the flow and temperature fields were calculated with a variation of inclined angle($\alpha$=30$^{\circ}$~90$^{\circ}$) and the distance between the jet exit and impingement plate-to-diameter (L/D=4~10) at a fixed Reynolds number(Re=20,000). For a small L/D, the near-peak Nusselt numbers were not significantly effected by the inclined angle. The near-peak Nusselt numbers were not significantly affected by the L/D in the case of a large $\alpha$. The overall shape of the local Nusselt numbers was influenced by both the jet orifice-to-plate spacing and the jet angle.

In a previous paper, we have examined the effects of nozzle configuration and jet to jet spacing on the heat transfer of 1 row of circular water jets. In this paper, experiments have been conducted to obtain the effects of nozzle to target plate distances on the heat transfer of 1 row of 3 jets and 1 row of 5 jets. The nozzle configurations are Cone type, Reverse cone type and Vertical circular type. Nozzle to target plate distance H was varied from 16 mm(H/D=2) to 80mm(H/D=10). For fixed value of mass flow rate and nozzle to target plate distance, larger values of average Nusselt number were obtained for the smaller jet to jet spacing. For the array of water jets, the average heat transfer was decreased slightly with increasing nozzle to target plate distance at low jet velocity of $\textrm{V}_{o}$=3 m/s. However, except for $\textrm{V}_{o}$=8 m/s of 1 row of 5 jets, it was increased with increasing nozzle to target plate distance at high jet velocity of $\textrm{V}_{o}$$\geq$6m/s. We proposed to apply the nozzle configuration of maximum average heat transfer to each nozzle to target plate distance for 1 row of 3 jets, and, it was Reverse cone type nozzle for 1 row of 5 jets(Reynolds number$\geq$36000).
A scanning stereo-PIV system was developed to measure the three-dimensional distribution of three-component velocity in a turbulent round jet. A laser light beam produced by a high repetition rate YLF pulse laser was expanded vertically by a cylindrical lens to form a laser light sheet. The light sheet is scanned in a direction normal to the sheet by a flat mirror mounted on an optical scanner, which is controlled by a programmable scanner controller. Two high-speed mega-pixel resolution C-MOS cameras captured the particle images illuminated by the light sheet, and stereoscopic PIV method was adopted to acquire the 3D-3C-velocity distribution of turbulent round jet in an octagonal tank filled with water. The jet Reynolds number was set at Re=1000 and the streamwise location of the measurement was fixed at approximately x = 40D. Time evolution of three-dimensional vortical structure, which is identified by vorticity, is visualized. It revealed that the existence of a group of hairpin-like vortex structures was quite evident around the rim of the shear layer of the jet. Turbulence statistics shows good agreement with the previous data, and divergence of a filtered (unfiltered) velocity vector field was $7\%\;(22\%)$ of root-me an-squared vorticity value.
Acetone LIF and Rayleigh scattering measurements were performed to identify the entrainment of ambient air in the buoyant jet qualitatively. The air entrainment near nozzle exit was enhanced with increasing both an axial distance and Reynolds number. The results supported that the air entrainment had to be considered in isothermal model for the development of its accuracy. Also, this paper provided an isothermal model based on the ideal plume, of which radiative heat loss fraction was assumed to 0.35 and the entainment of isothermal jet was considered. This simple model could be used in compartment or semi-enclosure fires such as tunnel, and it is more reliable because of introducing entrainment effect in isothermal jet.

The leading edge of a turbine blade was simulated as a circular cylindrical surface. The effect of free-stream turbulence on the mass transfer upstream of the injectionhole has been investigated experimentally. The effects of injection location, blowing ratio on the Sherwood number distribution were examined as well. The mass transfer coefficients were measured by a naphthalene sublimation technique. The free-stream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is 53,000. Other conditions investigated are: free-stream turbulence intensities of 3.9% and 8.0%, injection locations of $40^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$ from the front stagnation point of the cylinder, and blowing ratios of 0.5 and 1.0. The role of the horseshoe vortex formed upstream edge of the injected jet is dicussed in detail. When the blowing ratio is unity, and the coolant jet is injected at $40^{\circ}$, the mass transfer upstream of the jet is not affected by the coolant jet at all. On the other hand, when the injection hole is located beyond $50^{\circ}$, the mass transfer upstream edge of the injection hole suddenly increases due to the formation of the horseshoe vortex, but it dereases as the free-stream turbulence intensity increases because the strength of the horseshoe vortex structure becomes weakened. The role of the horseshoe vortex is clearly evidenced by placing a rigid rod at the injection hole instead of issuing the jet. In the case of the rigid rod, the spanwise Sherwood number upstream of the injection hole is much larger due to the intense influence of the horseshoe vortex.
