  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between body image and BMI with satisfaction of own body image, snack intake practices, food intake practices and weight control practices of 226 female college students in Jeonbuk province using questionnaire. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The average height, weight and BMI was 162.08cm, 52.02kg and 19.78, respectively. The average ideal body weight of the subjects was 48.92kg. Ninety percent of the subjects was dissatisfied with their body image. The degree of dissatisfaction was higher in the group who recognized themselves as fat. Most of subjects wanted to lose weight, but as the group having a recognition of thin body image significantly wanted to gain weight (p<0.001). 2. The subjects preferred fruits and juices for snack. The more subjects recognized themselves as fat, the more they restricted snack intake (p<0.05). 3. The rate of skipping meal tends to increase. The subjects did not intake balanced meals and skipped breakfast most (20.7%). The number of food groups taken at breakfast, lunch and dinner was 1.84, 2.25 and 2.55, respectively and the most variable food groups were taken at dinner(p<0.001). Dairy food group intake was low. The duration of meal time was longer in the underweight group by BMI regardless of body image recognition (p<0.05). 4. The weight controlling method was concentrated mostly on decreasing food intake. The more subjects recognized themselves as fat, the more they tried to control weight (p<0.001). Even though 59.5% of the subjects with no weight control experience had no future weight control plans, 50% of the group who recognized themselves as normal or fat did not want to control weight in the future (p<0.01). These results suggest that nutrition education programs and correction programs of food behaviors and weight control should start from focusing on the accurate recognition of body image for college female students.

  • The aim of this study was to acquire level on the occurrence of five fluoroquinolones(FQs) residue among cultured eels in Jeonbuk province. Samples were collected from the four local area(Kunsan, Gochang, Wanju and Osu) and surveyed on the distribution of FQs residual level in edible muscle using HPLC method. A total of 90 samples of eel was monitored for detection of the FQs residue. Among them, 30 eels(33.3%) were detected the FQs single or paired, respectively. The detection ratios were showed Osu(40%, 8/20), Gochang(33%, 13/44), Wanju(30%, 6/20) and Kunsan(30%, 3/10) in order, respectively. The ratio was equivalent to over 30% of overall in sampled area. The most frequently detected FQs were perfloxacin(PF) followed by enrofloxacin(EF), ciprofloxacin(CF), ofloxacin(OF) and norfloxacin(NF). Eight different combinations of FQ residual patterns were observed as single(5 type, 21%) or as paired(3type, 12,5%) respectively and frequently encountered patterns were PF(37%) and PF-EF(23%). The residual level of FQs was evaluated in the range of 1-75 ug/kg and the most prevalent levels of FQs was found in 1-25 ug/kg(35 fish, 85%) followed by 26-50 ug/kg(5 fishes, 11%) and 51-75 ug/kg(1 fishes, 3.3%). These results could be possible that the cultured eels were mostly exposed with PF, EF and CF, and might be treated with a variety of fluoroquinolones for prevention of bacterial disease.

  • The golden apple snail-Pomacea canaliculata was an alien species and introduced into Korea as table use in 1983. This species is possible pest in direct seeded rice paddy in Korea. We investigated the effects of this exotic snail on the macrophytes and the water quality in water canal. Also, the basic life cycle of this species and the overwintering ecology in Chungnam and Jeonbuk province were elucidated. A survey of natural water canal in Korea showed that high densities of the snail were associated with absences of macrophytes-Hydrilla verticillata, Ceratophyllum demersum, Spirodela polyrhiza and Lemna perpusilla. Experiments in water tank also demonstrated that the golden apple snail can cause the loss of macrophytes, and increase the EC(Electric conductivity), COD(Chemical oxygen demand), T-N(Total nitrogen) and T-P(Total phosphorus) in water.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutritional status before and after gastrectomy of gastric cancer patients in Jeonbuk Province. The subjects were 136 patients with gastrectomy of gastric cancer. We assessed the nutritional status before and after an operation by general characteristics (age, clinicopathological stage, type of operation, method of reconstruction), anthropometric characteristics (height, weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, body mass index (BMI), percent body fat, arm muscle circumference AMC, arm circumference AC) and biochemical characteristics (hemoglobin Hb, hematocrit Hct, mein corpuscular volume MCV, mean corpuscular hemoglobin MCH, total lymphocyte count TLC, serum albumin, serum transferrin). Mean ages were 60.0 yrs in males and 58.8 yrs in females. Age, clinicopathological stage, types of operation and reconstruction methods were not significantly different between males and females. Weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, BMI, percent body fat, AMC and AC significantly deteriorated by gastrectomy. There were severe weight losses in males and females after gastrectomy. Hemoglobin, Hct, MCV, MCH, TLC, albumin and transferrin significantly deteriorated by gastrectomy. After gastrectomy, subjects who were assessed as malnounrished in Hb and Hct were increased in male and those who were assessed as malnounrished in Hb were increased in females. These results suggest that a nutrition intervention, specially for energy, protein and iron, is necessary to improve the nutritional status of gastric cancer patients with gastrectomy.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to review the export support projects in Jeollabuk-do and to provide implications to the policy makers and to the local exporters. Based on this review, the study proposes future measures to enhance the efficiency of the current Jeollabuk-do export support project. Design/methodology/approach - This study reviews export support projects in Jeollabuk-do, d examines program types and utilization status, and subsequently summarizes the key aspects of Jeollabuk-do SMEs' export support projects. Findings - This study suggests that Jeollabuk-do's export support project can become more effective through active development of overseas markets and professional integration of marketing activities, particularly focusing on regionally specialized export products. Additionally, given the crucial roles played by the government, related agencies, and local offices in improving the export capabilities of SMEs in Jeollabuk-do, there is an emphasis on the need for continuous and systematic follow-up management and the establishment of export support projects and services. Research implications or Originality - While small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Korea account for a significant portion of export activities, their actual export performance and contribution are low. The export competitiveness of SMEs, particularly those located in regions other than Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, is not improving despite various export support projects being promoted. Under the circumstances, this study provide meaningful implications to the policy makers and to the local exporters.

  • A total of 672 Cryphonectria parasitica was isolated from 2,536 blight lesions on chestnut twigs, which were collected from major chestnut plantations all over Korea. Isolation rates of each province ranged from 13.5% in Jeonbuk-ds to 37.4% in Gyeongnam-do, with an average rate of 25.6%. The isolates were classified into six groups according to color and shape of colony on PDA: smooth margin (S), irregular margin (I), yellow to brown (Y), white (W), and white with yellow center (C). Among these groups, IY was the most abundant with an isolation rate of 65%. On the other hand, SW, SC, IW, and SY were quite rare, with isolation rates ranging from 1.5% to 5.8%. When the 672 isolates were inoculated on the chestnut twigs,380 isolates (56.5%) caused lesions larger than the standard virulent isolate EPISS-2, while 158 isolates (23.4%) caused smaller lesions than the standard hypovirulent isolate UEP-1. However, 87.4% of the isolates belonged to the virulent group and only 12.6% belonged to the hypovirulent group based on Bavendamm test. In the provinces of Jeonnam-do, Jeonbuk-do, and Gyeongnamdo, which have high density of chestnut trees, the rates of hypovirulent-like isolates were over 20%.
