Eight new species of two genera Dysidea and Euryspongia (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Dysideidae) are described from Gageodo, Ulleungdo, Geomundo, and Jejudo Islands, Korea. Four new species of the genus Dysidea are differentiated by the fibre structure, cored detritus, and fibre arrangement. Dysidea mureungensis n. sp. is characterized by the honeycomb shape of surface and no distinction between primary and secondary fibres. Dysidea glavea n. sp. differs by large sands cored in fibres and that the membrane easily separates from fibres. Dysidea geomunensis n. sp. has fibres that are thinner than those of D. glavea n. sp.. Dysidea corallina n. sp. is characterized by folded fan shape and the arrangement of secondary fibres. Four new species of the genus Euryspongia are differentiated by the fibre structure, cored detritus, shape of sponge, and fibre arrangement. Euryspongia radicula n. sp. is very different from other species by having regularly arranged fibres. Euryspongia spina n. sp. has a fence-like skeletal structure. Bridged type secondary fibres are arranged near the surface and web types are at the base of fibres. Euryspongia flabellum n. sp. has a very unique wide, thin leaf-like shape. String-like primary fibres of E. linea n. sp. are very unique and cored with large sized sands.
We used portions of mitochondrial 125 ribosomal RNA gene sequences (339 bp) to investigate the phylogenetic and population genetic characteristics of the Japanese anchovy, Engraulis japonicus, in Korean waters. A total of 35 mtDNA haplotypes were obtained from the samples collected in 3 locations (the southern area of the Yellow Sea, the western coast of Jejudo, and the eastern area of the South Sea) in Korean waters. One haplotype, AN8T103, obtained from the southern area of the Yellow Sea, was formed according to an independent phylogenetic individual in the PAUP analysis, which was separated from the others by a $0.2-4.1\%$ sequence divergence. This distinct haplotype appeared to be one that was carried by immigrants from another study area, but further study is necessary. Genetic divergence, except for AN8T103, was moderate to substantial $(0.2-3.8\%)$ and nucleotide diversity within populations was 0.015 for Yellow Sea, 0.013 for Jejudo, and 0.D15 for South Sea, respectively. The female gene flow was substantial or high (Nm=25.5-36.4), and the genetic distances between regions were not statistically significant $(P>0.01)$. These results indicated that the Japanese anchovy populations occurring in Korean waters were consisted of individuals randomly dispersed over geographic areas.
Soft coral Dendronephthya gigantea (Verrill, 1864) is a conspicuous species dominating shallow sea waters of Jejudo Island, Korea. Recently its whole mitochondrial genome sequencing was completed by us and the sequence information provided an opportunity to test the age of Octocorallia and time of evolutionary separation between some representative orders of the subclass Octocorallia. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on 13 mitochondrial protein encoding genes revealed a polyphyletic relationship among octocorallians representing two orders (Alcyonacea and Gorgonacea) and four families (Alcyoniidae, Nephtheidae, Briareidae, and Gorgoniidae). Estimates of divergence times among octocorallians indicate that the first splitting might occur around end of or after Cretaceous period (50-79 million years ago (Ma)). The age is relatively young compared to the long history of stony sea corals (>240 Ma). Taken together our result suggests a possible relatively recent radiating evolution at least in the order Alcyonacea and Gorgonacea. Molecular dating and phylogenetic analysis based on much broader taxon sampling and many genes might give an insight into this interesting hypothesis.

The objectives of this study are to propose a suitable treatment facility for waste energy recovery after analyzing the waste generation and disposal situation in Jejudo, to establish the plan to install the solar photovoltaics and wind power plant considering the site conditions and finally to establish the environmental energy town plan in conjunction with the existing facilities. The food waste biogas plant is selected as the treatment capacity of 200 ton/day. It is estimated that the biogas plant will produce the electricity of 7,594 MWh per year, which will reduce the greenhouse gas of 4,177 $tCO_2$ per year. The solar photovoltaics and wind power plant will produce the electricity of 13,410 MWh per year, which will reduce the greenhouse gas of 7,375 $tCO_2$ per year. Environmental energy town will give us the reduction of operating cost by centralized treatment of residues and byproducts, and by efficient utilization of produced energy.
Jeju Island, a volcanic island, is the region that shows the biggest rainfall and has a big elevation-specific deviation of precipitation, but Jeju Island River Maintenance Plan doesn't reflect the characteristics of Jeju Island as it only calculates probable precipitation from four weather stations with elevation less than 100m. Therefore, this study uses AWS observational data in four Jeju Island weather stations and other regions to calculate location-specific probable precipitation, review the elevation-probable precipitation correlation in southern and northern regions, and create a probable precipitation map for all regions of Jeju Island, in order to produce better outcomes. This study is expected to be the most basic data to establish a safe Jeju island from flood disaster in preparation for the future climate changes and widely used for Jejudo Basin Dimension Planning, River Maintenance Plan, Pre-Disaster Impact Review, etc.
Daphne kiusiana is an evergreen shrub with dense head-like umbels of white flowers distributed in southern Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan. Plants in China and Taiwan are recognized as var. atrocaulis by having a dark purple stem, elliptic leaves, and persistent bracts. Recently, plants on Jejudo Island were segregated as a separate species, D. jejudoensis, given their elliptic leaves with an acuminate apex, a long hypanthium and sepals, and a glabrous hypanthium. Morphological variations of three closely related taxa, the D. kiusiana complex, were investigated across the distributional range to clarify the taxonomic delimitation of members of the complex. Twelve characters of the leaf and flower were measured from digitized herbarium specimens using the image analysis program ImageJ and were included in a morphometric analysis, the results of which indicate that the level of variation in the characters is very high. The results of a principal component analysis weakly separated D. jejudoensis from D. kiusiana according to their floral characteristics, such as a longer, glabrous hypanthium, and larger sepals. However, some individuals of D. kiusiana, particularly those from Bigeumdo Island, were included in D. jejudoensis. Recognition of D. kiusiana var. atrocaulis based on the leaf shape was not supported in the analysis, and D. jejudoensis may be recognized as a variety of D. kiusiana. Our morphometric analysis shows that digitized images of herbarium specimens could be useful and an additional method by which to investigate more diverse specimens.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that cancer killed 7.6 million people in the world in 2005, and that 40% of all cancer deaths can be prevented. According to the WHO Global Action Plan Against Cancer (GAPAC), monitoring of cancer patients is the essential part of cancer control, and should be conducted through cancer registration. Originally, cancer registries were primarily concerned with the description of cancer patterns, trends of cancer occurrence, and etiology of cancer. In the last 20 years, cancer registries provided not only information on the incidence and characteristics of specific cancers, but also supplied the source of cancer control planning and evaluation and the care of individual cancer patients with survival. Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) presents incidence data from populations all over the world every five year. Volume IX in the series (data for 1998-2002) has recently (November 2007) been published online at International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Nine data from Korea Central Cancer Registry (National data), Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Incheon, Daejeon, Usan, Jejudo regional cancer registries were included in that volume. In this paper, the editorial process, the characteristics of national data, and quality indices in CI5 IX are being described. In addition, cancer control activities related to cancer registration in some selected countries are also presented.

This study was conducted to evaluate the vegetation structure of the Peucedanum japonicum community by the phytosociological method of floristic composition table and cluster analysis on the southern coast of Korea. The vegetation of the Peucedanum japonicum community was classified mainly into 2 communities such as the Miscanthus sinensis community and the Lysimachia mauritiana-Rosa wichuraiana community. The Carex boottiana and Sedum oryzifolium community were classified as the lower rank of Miscanthus sinensis community. On level 1 of the cluster analysis of plant species, they were classified into Lysimachia mauritiana and Rosa wichuraiana group, also Miscanthus sinensis, Carex boottiana and Sedum oryzifolium in Peucedanum japonicum community, which is similar to the community classification shown in the synoptic table. On level 1 of the cluster analysis of relev, inland coast with Jejudo was Lysimachia mauritiana and Rosa wichuraiana of group such as level 1 of the cluster analysis of plant species, and island coast with Geomundo was Miscanthus sinensis Carex boottiana and Sedum oryzifolium of group such as cluster analysis of plant species.
During June 2017, we collected two postflexion larvae (6.01 and 7.56 mm in standard length [SL]) and two juveniles (7.72 and 9.62 mm SL) belonging to Myctophidae in the waters of Jejudo Island. Those four individuals were identified as Diaphus garmani, which had not been reported in Korea. They were distinguished from Benthosema pterotum by melanophores in the abdominal cavity (absent in D. garmani vs. present in B. pterotum) and the development of photophores (developed in D. garmani vs. rudimentary in B. pterotum) when shorter than 10.0 mm SL. Analysis of 16S rRNA sequences showed that the sequences of four individuals matched those of adult D. garmani (Kimura 2-parameter distance: 0.6-0.8%). This is the first record of larvae and juveniles of D. garmani in Korean waters, and we propose a new Korean name, Gar-ma-ni-sat-bi-neul-chi.
In this paper the consumer protection regulations of 16 wide area self-governments in Korea are studied. Status of consumer protection policy committees and their general policies for consumer protection of these wide area self-governments are also investigated. The data of consumer protection regulation were collected from the internet web-site of each self-government and the status of consumer protection policy committee and the general policy for consumer protection were obtained by requesting each self-government to report administration information during May through October in 200l. 13 of 16 wide area self-governments except Daegu, Inchon, and Jejudo have own consumer protection regulations. Major parts of these regulations conform the standard regulation of ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs. Many of the consumer protection policy committees reported that they do not have meetings constantly. Moreover since the price of goods and services is the typical subject of meetings, the committees do not seem to properly play the role of a consumer protection policy authority. Contents of the general policy for consumer protection of many self-governments are simple description of detailed practicing plans according to the general consumer protection policy of the national government. By criticizing the problems aroused during the study of consumer protection policy of self-governments, suggestions are given which will help for the development of consumer policy of wide area self-governments.
