  • This is the first report of Pterygotrigla multiocellata from the family Triglidae, collected in Korea. The specimen (314 mm in standard length) was caught in a gill net in the coastal waters of Jeju Island on 11 February 2010. This species is characterized by the following morphological traits: head large and triangular, bony plates absent along the base of the second dorsal fin, antrorse rostral spine long, and cleithral spine long. We suggest a new Korean name, "Gin-ppul-mit-seong-dae" for P. multiocellata.

  • One specimen of Epinephelus areolatus, belonging to the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae, was collected by a hook from commercial longline fisheries in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. This species is mostly similar to E. chlorostigma, but the former is distinguished from the latter by having larger brown spots and a white posterior margin on the caudal fin. We propose a new Korean name "Dae-moon-ba-ri" for E. areolatus.

  • Rainfall, on Jeju Island varies regionally in relation to Mt. Halla with higher rainfall within southern area and lower in western area, and its variability is expected to expand according to the climate change scenario. Non-parametric trend analysis for rainfall, using both historic (1971-2010) and simulated (2011-2100) data assuming the A1B emissions scenario, shows regionally increasing trends with time. In perspective of agricultural land use, area for market garden including various crop types with high water demand is increasing over the Island, especially in the western area with lower rainfall compared to southern area. On the other hand, area for fruit including mandarin and kiwi with low water demand is widely distributed over southern and northern part having higher rainfall. These regional disparity of water demand/supply may be more affected by extreme events such as drought and heavy rainfall that has not yet been considered. Therefore, it is necessary to make policies for water resource management considering both demand and supply in different regions with climate change impacts over Jeju Island.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the utility value of boat fishing experience marine tourism activity in Jeju Island's Chagwido. The utility value is estimated by single bounded and double-bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation method. The contingent valuation method is used to estimate economic values for all kinds of coastal ecosystem services. The method involves directly asking people, in a survey, how much they would be willing to pay for specific environmental services. So, the method has great flexibility, allowing valuation of a wider variety of non-market goods and services than is possible with any other non-market valuation technique. This study collects the effective 504 questionnaires from boat fishing experience tourists in Jeju Island's Chagwido. The results show that the average willingness to pay amount(WTP) is estimated to be about 17,000 Korea won by single bounded and double-bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation method. This indicates that the utility value of boat fishing experience marine tourism activity is estimated to be about 17,000 Korea won in Jeju Island's Chagwido.

  • The occurrence of eggs of hairtail, Trichiurus japonicus was examined in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea in spring from May to June in 2014, April to May in 2015, and April to in 2016. As a whole, hairtail eggs occurred abundantly in May, 2014. Especially, high densities over 300 ind./1,000 ㎥ of eggs abundances in May and June, 2014 occurred in the north-western area of Jeju Island where is upwelling phenomenon occurred throughout the year. In the relationship between T-S and the hairtail eggs abundances, high densities over 100 ind./1,000 ㎥ of eggs abundances occurred in temperature of 18.1-18.7℃ and salinity of 33.92-34.87‰ in May when hairtail eggs occurred abundantly.

  • In the present study, to explore the current status of mammals that inhabit Jindo Island, Jeollanam-do, South Korea, a survey was conducted from July 6 to July 9, 2016. Using several survey methods, such as Sherman's live trap, footprint, caves, excretions, and road-kill investigations, the mammals observed on Jindo Island were found to be from 5 orders and 9 families, including 12 species in total. Among them, three species of small mammals were Mogera wogura, Crocidura shantungensis, and Apodemus agrarius. Additionally, two legally protected species were found through excretion observations. Lutra lutra and Prionailurus bengalensis, which were designated to endangered wild animal classes I and II, respectively. The survey results can be used as a valuable resource for identifying the distribution and habitat status of mammals in the Jindo-gun area, as well as for building a database for ecosystem preservation.

  • This paper presents a renewable energy configuration plan of Micro grid in Gapa Island. To analyze the characteristics of Micro grid, BESS (Battery Energy Storage System), PMSG (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) and SCIG (Squirrel Cage Induction Generator) are first modelled. The PMSG and SCIG will operate with basis on the real power curve. when the total power demand is larger than the total power generation, the BESS will be operated and the SOC (State Of Charge) is reduced. If the value of SOC could drop down to limited value, the system may be broken because of the voltage drop of BESS. To solve this problem, a DG (Diesel Generator) is used to charge the BESS and keep the voltage value of BESS with in a allowance limit. This paper represents simulation result when PMSG, SCIG connected to the Micro grid installed in Gapa Island. The simulation is carry out by using PSCAD/EMTDC program with actual line constant and transformer parameter in Gapa Island.

  • Sargassum golden tides occurred in Shinan-gun and Jeju Island, Korea, between January and May 2015. In Shinangun, 5,180 tons of Sargassum were removed from 3,339 ha of coastline, while 20,000 tons were removed from Jeju Island. The huge floating masses of seaweed caused damage to fisheries in Shinan-gun including abalone sea cage, Pyropia and Saccharina farms off the southwest coast of Korea. Drifting Sargassum also washed ashore on Jeju Island. The species of Sargassum in these golden tides was identified as S. horneri (Turner) C. Agardh, based on morphology and molecular data, and it appears to have originated from the East China Sea. This is the first report on Sargassum golden tides causing damage to fisheries in Korea.

  • In this study we reinvestigated the taxonomy of the collared many-toothed snake (Korean name: Bibaribem) of Jeju Island, Korea. The Bibari-bem is a colubrid indigenous to Jeju Island and was first assigned to S. collaris Gray. However, the geographic distribution of S. collaris is not continuous with the Korean peninsula, making it doubtful that Bibari-bem should be assigned to it. Some herpetologists have suggested that Bibari-bem may instead belong to the closely related S. chinensis G?nther. To resolve this conflict, we compared the diagnostic characteristics of S. collaris and S. chinensis as described in the literature with the characteristics of individuals collected on Jeju Island. We collected six individuals with one preocular, two postocular, two anterior temporal, and no lower ocular scales. Five individuals had nine (3-3-3 form) supralabials, among which fourth to sixth are touching the orbit and the ninth is the largest. One individual had eight (2-3-3 form) supralabials, third to fifth touching the orbit, with the eighth being the largest. These data suggest that Bibari-bem is not S. collaris, but S. chinensis.

  • Spatial and temporal patterns of precipitation and temperature occur with regard to aspect and elevation of Mt. Halla in Jeju Island. Therefore, there is a need to predict regional drought associate with them to mitigate of impacts of drought. In this study, regional drought is predicted based on Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) and standardized precipitation index (SPI) using future (2015~2044) climate change scenario RCP (representative concentration pathways) 4.5 classified as 24 regions according to aspect and elevation. The results show that number and duration of drought will be decrease in Jeju Island. However, severity of severe drought will be increase in western and northern aspect with under 200 meters above mean sea level. These findings provide primary information for developing the proactive strategies to mitigate impacts of drought by future climate change in Jeju Island.
