  • The purpose of this study is to identify the leading price between Jeju and Wando's oliver flounder producer price and to analyze the dynamic effect of the regional producer price using the panel VAR model. In the process of analysis, it was confirmed that there are unit roots in the monthly data of Jeju and Wando's oliver flounder producer price. So, in order to avoid spurious regression, the rate change of producer price which carries out log difference was used in the analysis. As a result of the analysis, first, the panel Granger causality test showed that the influence of the change rate of producer price in oliver flounder in Jeju was slightly larger than that in Wando, but it was found that each region all leads the change rate of the producer price in oliver flounder. Second, the panel VAR estimation showed that the rate change of producer price in Jeju and Wando a month ago had a statistically significant effect on the change rate of producer price of each region. Third, the impulse response analysis indicated that other regions are affected a little more than the same region in case of the occurrence of the impact on the error terms of the change rate of produce price in Jeju and Wando oliver flounder. Fourth, the variance decomposition analysis showed that the change rate of producer price in the two regions was higher explained by Jeju compared to Wando. In conclusion, it is expected that the above results can not only be useful as basic data for the stabilization of oliver flounder producer price and the establishment of policies for easing volatility but can also help the oliver flounder industry operate its business.

  • Bacterial canker of kiwifruit recently outbroke throughout the southcoast of Korea, the major production areas of kiwifruit. Some orchards were destroyed because of severe damage by the epidemics of the bacterial canker, especially in Jeju-si and Bukjeju-kun, Jeju and Goheung-kun and Wando-kun, Chonnam. The bacterial canker, which has been occurred in Jeju from the mid 1980s, was first observed in Haenam-kun, Chonnam in 1991. The disease outbroken throughout the southcoast of Korea caused extremely severe damages and the diseased areas are increasing continuously. The possibility that the bacterial canker was introduced from Japan into Jeju is high, although the path of the epidemic is still not clear. And then the bacterial canker may spread from Jeju to Haenam and/or Wando, from which the disease may spread to the southcoast of Chonnam and the westcoast of Kyungnam in Korea.

  • In order to produce Laminaria japonica in Jeju as feed for abalone, a transplant experiment was performed with the Baekryungdo and the Wando cultivar stocks at the Udo aquafarm from January to July 2003. Eight water conditions at the aquafarm and eleven traits of the two cultivar stocks were measured once a month. The water temperature ranged from 12.9$^{\circ}C$ to 23.5$^{\circ}C$. The salinity was 31.3-36.8‰ the DO was 5.40-9.86 mg ${\cdot}$ $l^{-1}$ the pH was 7.82-9.61. Concentrations of $NO_2-N,\;NO_3-N,\;NH_4-N\;and\;PO_4-P$ were 0.02-0.15 $\mu$M, 2.27-3.49 $\mu$M, 0.16-0.56 $\mu$M and 0.07-0.99 $\mu$M, respectively. The whole frond length of the Baekryungdo and the Wando specimens were 173.84 and 153.67 cm. The blade width, stipe length, blade length, fascia length, blade thickness, total weight and substantiality of the Baekryungdo and the Wando specimens were 14.61 and 13.05 cm, 3.94 and 3.02 cm, 169.88 and 150.65 cm, 155.81 and 137.10 cm, 1.01 and 0.96 cm, 258.04 and 200.96 cm, and 101.56 and 94.62, respectively at the conclusion of the experiment in July. The measurements of the Baekryungdo specimens were slightly higher than those of Wando specimens. The fascia width, stipe thickness and fascia thickness of the Wando specimens were slightly higher than those of the Baekryungdo specimens. The relative growth rates of these traits of two cultivar stocks during the growth test were very similar. Generally, the performance of the Baekryungdo cultivar stock seems to be better than that of the Wando samples. Further study of the physiological ecology for cultivation and breeding is needed in the future.

  • Streptococcosis, caused by Streptococcus iniae and Streptococcus parauberis is an important bacterial disease that affects in olive flounder in Korea. In Korea, multivalent bacterial vaccines are used to prevent streptococcal diseases in aquaculture. In this study, commercial vaccines containing formalin-inactivated bacterial cells of S. iniae and S. parauberis were administered at six fish farms and one unvaccinated fish farm were designated for investigation (Wando; 4 sites and Jeju; 3 sites). Blood was collected from vaccinated and unvaccinated olive flounders, and titers of antibodies against S. iniae and S. parauberis in serum were analyzed using ELISA. After a one shot vaccination in the farms at Jeju (farm A) and Wando (farm D), the proportion of individuals with specific antibodies against S. parauberis OD values of 0.4 or higher was 60% and 53.5%, respectively. But after booster vaccination, the proportion of individuals with serum OD values of 0.4 or higher was higher substantially increased to 96.6% (farm A) and 100% (farm D). The levels of S. parauberis specific antibodies of olive flounder were increased after vaccination in three fish farms (farm D, E, and F), but not S. iniae specific antibodies.

  • Spatial variation in the reproductive effort of Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum is often closely associated with variation in the seawater temperature and food availability, which determines gonad maturity and the quantity of gamates produced during spawning. Previous studies also have reported that severe infection by the protozoan parasite Perkinsus olseni exerts a negative impact on clam reproduction, retarding gonad maturation or decreasing the reproductive effort. In the present study, we investigated impacts of P. olseni infection on the reproductive condition of Manila clam during a spawning season. Histology revealed that 54% of female clams in Wando off the south coast were in spawning, while only 10% of the female from Gomso and 0% of the female from Seonjaedo in Gyeonggi bay off the west coast were engaged in spawning at the end of May in 2004. Ray's fluid thioglycollate media (RFTM) assay was applied to assess P. olseni infection and indicated that the infection intensity in Wando ($3,608,000{\pm}258,000cells/g$ wet tissue) was significantly higher than the levels in Gomso ($1,305,000{\pm}106,000cells/g$ wet tissue) and Seonjaedo ($1,083,000{\pm}137,000cells/g$ wet tissue, p < 0.001). The size of the ripe female follicle determined from histology was significantly smaller in Wando ($0.032mm^2$) compared to the sizes in Gomso ($0.059mm^2$) and Seonjaedo ($0.052mm^2$, p < 0.05). Accordingly, the number of ripe eggs in the follicle was significantly fewer among clams in Wando (14) compared to the numbers determined in Gomso (23) and Seonjaedo (22). The absolute quantity of egg in ripe clams from Wando (31.01 mg) was also significantly smaller than Seonjaedo (61.79 mg) and Gomso (133.3 mg). Quantity of total protein, carbohydrate, and lipid in the tissue in the Wando samples was significantly smaller than the quantities determined in Gomso and Seonjaedo (p < 0.001). The observed poor reproductive condition and proximate tissue composition of the females in Wando were, in part, explained by the extremely high level of the parasites, sapping the ability to store energy in the host tissues, which is used in tissue growth and the egg production.

  • A series of sheps-of-opportunity sea sryface temperature (SST) measurement beween Jeju and Wando during a period from December 1979 through June 1981 produced following results. 1. A sihnificantly warm water appeared south of Chuja Island and Cheongsan Island during Island. It is suggested that this water represents a current entering the Jeju Strait from the west. Direction of this currint in other seasons is not certain. 2. Coastal waters were found north of the Cheongsan Island and Bogil Islhnd throughout the measurement period. In February these waters sometimes reached as far as Chuja Island to south. 3. Frequently thermal fronts were observed near the Chuja Island and the Cheongsan Island. 4. In summer cold waters appeared north of the Chuja Island and Changsu Island. Intrusion of cold bottom water from offshore and its subsequent vertical mixing due to strong tidal current are probably reponsible for this appearance. 5. Cold waters also appeared locally around islands and in ghe Jeju Harbor in spring and summer. 6. North-south SST difference reached 8-9$^{\circ}C$ in winter which is the annual maximum. 7. Annual range of SST varies from 12-14$^{\circ}C$ in the central part of the Jeju Strait to 16-20$^{\circ}C$ in coastal waters to north. The highest SST appeared everywhere in September but the lowest one did not appesr in the same month of year.

  • This study investigated the physicochemical and enzymatic properties of unmarketable bastard halibut (Paralichthys olivaceus) cultured in different regions (i.e., Jeju, Wando, and Geoje) as a potential source of surimi and surimi gel. The proximate composition of unmarketable bastard halibut cultured in different regions did not differ significantly at P<0.05. Compared to Alaska pollock muscle, all of the unmarketable bastard halibut muscle had a 4% higher crude protein content and 5% lower moisture content. The collagen content of bastard halibut muscle cultured in Jeju was 1.96 g/100 g, which was higher than in fish cultured in other regions. Regardless of the region where cultured or pH, the enzymatic activities of the crude extracts from unmarketable bastard halibut muscle ranged from 0.30.0.48 U/mg for casein and hemoglobin, 11.9.13.7 U/mg for LeuPNA, 5.6.6.7 U/mg for ArgPNA, 2.8.4.7 U/mg for SAAPFNA, and 0.1.0.2 U/mg for BAPNA. Regardless of region, no mercury or lead was found in any of the unmarketable bastard halibut muscle, except for lead in fish cultured in Geoje. The strength of surimi gels from unmarketable bastard halibut cultured in Jeju, Geoje, and Wando was 1059, 988, and 900 g${\times}$cm, respectively. The surimi gel from unmarketable bastard halibut cultured in Jeju was stronger than commercial Alaska pollock surimi, which was grade SA.

  • Endophytic green algae growing in fronds of Grateloupia spp. were examined for infection frequency from their field populations of Jeju, Wando, and Uljin, Korea in August and September 2013. Three endophytes were isolated in laboratory culture from a G. lanceolata thallus collected in Jeju. Unialgal cultures were made from the endophytes, and their morphological characteristics were observed with light microscopy. In addition, a phylogenetic analysis based on chloroplast-encoded elongation factor tufA gene sequences was performed to identify the G. lanceolata endophytes. Three filamentous green endophytic species, Ulvella leptochaete, Blastophysa rhizopus, and Bolbocoleon piliferum were reported for the first time in Korea. General biological information for the three endophytes was also described.

  • From the point of view of safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment, the Vessel Traffic Management System along the Korea coastal waterway is inevitably introduced. But the establishing priority per area must be evaluated under the restricted budget. In this case, the estimated traffic flow has a major effect on priority evaluation. In the former paper , an algorithm was proposed for estimating the trip distribution between each pair of zones such as harbours and straits. This paper aims to formulate a simulation model for estimating the dynamic traffic flow per area in the Korea coastal waterway. The model consists of the algorithm constrined by the statistical movement of ships and the observed data, the regression analysis and the traffic network evaluations. The processed results of traffic flow except fishing vessel are summarized as follows ; 1) In 2000, the traffic congestions per area are estimated, in proportion of ship's number (tonnage), as Busan area 22.3%(44.5%), Yeosu area 19.8%(11.2%), Wando-Jeju area18.1%(6.8%), Mokpo area 14.9%(9.9%), Gunsan area 9.1%(9.3%), Inchon area 8.1%(7.7%), Pohang area 5.5%(8.5%), and Donghae area 2.2%(2.1%). 2) For example in Busan area, the increment of traffic volume per annum is estimated 4, 102 ships (23 million tons) and the traffic flow in 2000 is evaluated 158, 793 ships (687 million tons). 3) consequently, the increment of traffic volume in Busan area is found the largest and followed by Yeosu, Wando-Jeju area. Also, the traffic flow per area in 2000 has the same order.

  • Citrus cultivation plays a pivotal role, making a significant contribution to global fruit production and dietary consumption. Accurate identification of viral pathogens is imperative for the effective management of plant viral disease in citrus crops. High-throughput sequencing serves as an alternative approach, enabling comprehensive pathogen identification on a large scale without requiring pre-existing information. In this study, we employed HTS to investigate viral pathogens infecting citrus in three different regions of South Korea: Jejudo (Jeju), Wando-gun (Wando), and Dangjin-si (Dangjin). The results unveiled diverse viruses and viroids that exhibited regional variations. Notably, alongside the identification of well-known citrus viruses such as satsuma dwarf virus, citrus tatter leaf virus, and citrus leaf blotch virus (CLBV), this study also uncovered several viruses and viroids previously unreported in Korean citrus. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that majority of identified viruses exhibited the closest affilations with isolates from China or Japan. However, CLBV and citrus viroid-I-LSS displayed diverse phylogenetic positions, reflecting their regional origins. This study advances our understanding of citrus virome diversity and regional dynamics through HTS, emphasizing its potential in unraveling intricate viral pathogens in agriculture. Consequently, it significantly contributes to disease management strategies, ensuring the resilience of the citrus industry.
