  • We have done the input-output analysis to see the over all impact of flounder industry of Jeju region on the domestic economy of Korea. To do the input-output analysis, we have constructed the data set for the input-output table by using the existing data set in the "2003 input- output table of Jeju regional area" published by the joint work of Jeju branch of Korea bank and the Jeju Development Institute, together with some raw data provided by Jejudo Marine Fish-Culture Cooperative. We have also produced input coefficient of flounder industry by making flounder industrial sector exogenous, separated from intermediate demand. To summarize our empirical results, the inducement effect of production, value added, and employment of Jeju flounder aquaculture industry are 300 billion won, 116 billion won and 1,800 people respectively. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest flounder industry of Jeju region contributes powerfully to not only Jeju economy but also all over the Korea economy.

  • The regional economy growth of Jeju has seen higher than national growth since 2011 by the establishment of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the increase of incoming population, but its economic growth has slowed after 2016. This study conducted the dynamic shift-share analysis using the production and employees of each industry from 2010 to 2016, targeting Jeju with many factors of regional economic change. In the results of empirical analysis, the regional economy of Jeju was not the industrial structure depending on the national growth, but the industrial structure by the competitiveness and industrial structure of Jeju region. The industries having positive(+) effects of industrial mix effect and competitive effect on the production and the number of employees were the electricity/gas/heavy equipments & waterworks, construction, accommodation & restaurants, and service industry. These industries have positive effects on the regional industry of Jeju. The above-mentioned industries are not only more likely to grow than other regions, but also to drive the local economy of Jeju. In order for these industries to continuously contribute to the regional economy of Jeju, it would be necessary to have the policy/institutional support in the long-term perspective.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the effects on the regional economy from the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival. In order to examine the economic ripple effects of the festival, we examine its impact on the local economy using two regional (Jeju-National) industry-related models based on the 2013 Jeju Region Input and Output Table. We also compare how the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival is growing and affecting the regional economy through a comparison between 2017 and 2018. Comparing the results of a production-inducing and value added-effect analysis of the induced industries from investment expenditures for the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, the production-inducing effects increased by 2.1 times-from 9.05 billion won in 2017 to 18.7 billion won in 2018. The value-added effect increased by 2.2 times, from nearly 4.3 billion won in 2017 to nearly 9.2 billion won in 2018. The analysis shows that the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival contributes greatly to an income increase for local residents. In order to enhance the effects of the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, it is necessary to use policies that link culture and tourism in Jeju.

  • The mesoporous metal organic framework structure Fe-BTC was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal process with noticeable yield. The synthesis operation was conducted at intermediate temperature and for shortened operation time as compared to conventional procedures. This process approach with reduced operating temperature and shortened operation time may open an opportunity window towards process economy with reduction in energy consumption. A simple mathematical approach of diffraction indexing using X-ray diffraction patterns of synthesized powder was employed to confirm its crystalline nature and to investigate its high temperature stability. The crystallite size was calculated by using Debye-Scherrer equation.

  • Diverse alternative economies have been discussed to overcome the problems with the globalizing neoliberal capitalism. Social economy and cooperatives are those focusing on the community economies; most countries have local economy-society based on mutual aid and common properties. Various experiences and institutions across local areas have been evolved to keep using their local resources in sustainable way. While recent social economy discussions in Korea are mostly in relation to economic crisis and focus on the Western experiences and institutions, the local area experiences in Korea are similar to the rules universal across countries along with particulars developed from local circumstances. Jeju has maintained village common fishing ground and Isidore farm which has been developed as an innovative type of cooperatives. These cases help to find community economies in practices and studying local experiences would enhance the opportunity to succeed in finding and practicing real alternative community economies in other local areas.

  • Waste management in Jeju Province, Korea, has recently emerged as an urgent problem. The increasing waste discharge requires more landfills but, since it is an island, the available land is restricted. Accordingly, an efficient waste management urgently requires environmentally sustainable policies. In this article, the waste discharge characteristics (such as the amount of waste, its composition, etc.) of Jeju Province have been compared with those in the rest of Korea. The current industrial waste management of two cities on the Island, Jeju City and Seogwipo City, has been also analyzed to suggest policies for an efficient management. The local government's endeavor to enhance environmental awareness of the community has been known to reduce the private cost of policy compliance, and have individuals recognize the results of their policy compliance. Policies to achieve the above are then proposed.
