  • Cavernous hemangioma of the gallbladder is an extremely rare benign tumor. The tumor has only a few cases being reported in literature. However, to the best of our knowledge, no reports focusing on the MRI findings of cavernous hemangioma of the gallbladder have been published. This study reports a case of gallbladder hemangioma with pathologic and radiologic reviews, including MRI findings.

  • Plasmacytomas are extramedullary accumulations of plasma cells originating from soft tissue. Mediastinal plasmacytoma is a rare presentation. A 67-year-old man recovered after antibiotic treatment for community-acquired pneumonia. However, on convalescent chest radiography after 3 months, mass like lesion at the right lower lung field was newly detected. Follow-up chest computed tomography (CT) revealed an increase in the extent of the right posterior mediastinal mass that we had considered to be pneumonic consolidations on previous CT scans. Through percutaneous needle biopsy, we diagnosed IgG kappa type extramedullary plasmacytoma of the posterior mediastinum.

  • Since main portion of the required electric power in Jeju Island is provided from the mainland through two HVDC lines, Jeju HVDC has a most significant impact on Jeju power system. Average wind speed of Jeju Island is the highest among several candidates in South Korea. So, Jeju Island has been a suitable site for the construction of wind farms where several wind farms are now operating and several others to be sited. Since the large-scale wind generation could have adverse impacts on the stable operation of Jeju power system, wind power is also important for the stability of Jeju power system. Therefore, accurate modeling of Jeju HVDC and wind farms is required for stability analysis of Jeju power system. In this paper, PSS/E-based dynamic modeling of Jeju HVDC and DFIG wind farms is proposed. Model-writing technique of PSS/E is used to develop USRAUX model and USRMDL model for controlling the frequency of HVDC and imposing an operation limit of wind power, respectively. Dynamic characteristics of Jeju HVDC and DFIG wind farms are analyzed through the dynamic simulations. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the developed models for Jeju power system.

  • Oxidative stress is considered a major contributor in the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy and in diabetes complications, such as nephropathy and cardiovascular diseases. Diabetic neuropathy, which is the most frequent complications of diabetes, affect sensory, motor, and autonomic nerves. This study aimed to investigate whether 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF) protects SH-SY5Y neuronal cells against high glucose-induced toxicity. In the current study, we found that diabetic patients exhibited higher lipid peroxidation caused by oxidative stress than healthy subjects. 7,8-DHF exhibits superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities. High glucose-induced toxicity severely damaged SH-SY5Y neuronal cells, causing mitochondrial depolarization; however, 7,8-DHF recovered mitochondrial polarization. Furthermore, 7,8-DHF effectively modulated the expression of pro-apoptotic protein (Bax) and anti-apoptotic protein (Bcl-2) under high glucose, thus inhibiting the activation of caspase signaling pathways. These results indicate that 7,8-DHF has antioxidant effects and protects cells from apoptotic cell death induced by high glucose. Thus, 7,8-DHF may be developed into a promising candidate for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy.

  • Purpurogallin, a natural phenol obtained from oak nutgalls, has been shown to possess antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory effects. Recently, in addition to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation that induces cell apoptosis via oxidative stress, particulate matter 2.5 ($PM_{2.5}$) was shown to trigger excessive production of reactive oxygen species. In this study, we observed that UVB radiation and $PM_{2.5}$ severely damaged human HaCaT keratinocytes, disrupting cellular DNA, lipids, and proteins and causing mitochondrial depolarization. Purpurogallin protected HaCaT cells from apoptosis induced by UVB radiation and/or $PM_{2.5}$. Furthermore, purpurogallin effectively modulates the pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic proteins under UVB irradiation via caspase signaling pathways. Additionally, purpurogallin reduced apoptosis via MAPK signaling pathways, as demonstrated using MAPK-p38, ERK, and JNK inhibitors. These results indicate that purpurogallin possesses antioxidant effects and protects cells from damage and apoptosis induced by UVB radiation and $PM_{2.5}$.

  • Ruptured intracranial aneurysms in infants are rare and infantile fusiform anterior cerebral artery (ACA) aneurysms are much rarer. In this report, we described the case of a 7-month-old infant with a ruptured fusiform ACA aneurysm who presented with seizure and underwent endovascular treatment. The patient was initially in a coma and the neurologic condition did not improve after treatment. The clinical characteristics of the case and literature review were discussed.

  • The object of this study was to evaluate the possibility and incidence of innate pacer in Jeju raceresource. This peculiar gait occurs naturally in some foreign breeds. To author's knowledge, this is the first report of innate pacers on the Korean native horse. In order to determine the incidence of pacer in Jeju Ponies and Jeju Pony crossbreds, gait analysis and pedigree check were performed at the Let's Run Park Jeju (total 547 ponies and pony crossbred racers) in 2013. Results of this study showed that 16 (8.1%) of the 198 examined Jeju Ponies. However, 349 Jeju Pony crossbreds had no innate pacers. Of the 16 Jeju Pony pacers, 11 males (68.8%) and 5 females (31.2%) are included in the present study. In conclusion, only the Jeju Pony was innate pacers like other foreign breeds. The authors suspect that the causes of the difference of the breeds were origin of the pony and genetic differences.
