JSize is a Java equivalent of the Unix size program. The Unix size program analyses an executable file and estimates the size of code and data segment when the file is loaded on memory. Likewise, JSize analyze a Java class file and estimates the size of class area when the file is loaded on memory. This paper presents the principles necessary to estimate the class area size with the information obtained from a class file. An experimental result is included to show the accuracy of estimation the JSize provides.
The Java language is rapidly being adopted in the Internet. The distributed applications and their application range are being expanded beyond just a programing language and developed Into software applications. A variety of researches are going on with regard to the Java Virtual Machine runtime environment and methods of analyzing the Java class files and utilizing the information for applications. A class file is a converted file that is executable by the Java virtual machine. Analysis on the class file structure and the runtime processes will be convenient in arranging the decompilers and debugging the source programs. This paper is about the runtime process analyzer that presents the runtime processes, including class files, more visually. The content of a class file will be easily accessed and expressed as in a graphic user interface. The information in the class file displayed is divided into Constant_Pool, Class_file, Interface, Field, Method and Attribute with information on method area, operand stack and local variables expressed visually.
The integrated loader/linker plays a very important role in creating all types of information and ensuring information integrity needed for substantial executions by receiving a PE input file, an intermediate representation of a java class file or a .NET environment, thereby allowing for saving information optimized for verification, resolution, initialization, and execution. This paper proposes a loader/linker system for integrating a java class file and .NET-based PE file. As a means of implementing the loader/linker system, a new execution file format(*.evm) and a memory format were designed to save all information of Java class files and .NET-based PE files, and enable the information in those files to be executed in a JVM or .NET environment through the use of saved execution information.
The virtual machine is a programming environment that supports device and platform independence. So far, virtual machines such as JVM and KVM have been used in a variety of environments for the Java language. Some virtual machines similar to them are also being developed and used. This paper Presents the experiences of extracting elements essential for small sized devices such as PDA from Java Class files(*.class) and designing a converted class file(*.rclass) for runtime efficiency by modifying its class file format and developing its translator. In addition, a virtual machine is developed to receive the translated class file entered and output the runtime results.

Class library is one of the most crucial element of Java runtime environment in addition to Java virtual machine. In particular, embedded Java system depends heavily on the class library due to having a low bandwidth communication link and a small amount of memory which are a common restriction of embedded system. It is therefore quite necessary to find the characteristic of the class library for embedded Java system to build an efficient Java runtime environment. In this paper we have analyzed the characteristic of the class library for embedded system. The analysis includes sorts of classes in the library, typical size of the file which contains the class, and the composition of constant pool which is a major part of the file. We also have found typical number of field and method a class contains, the sizes of stack and local variable array each method requires, and the length of bytecode in the method. The result of this study can be used to estimate the startup time for class loading and the size of memory to create an instance of class which are a mandatory information to design an efficient embedded Java virtual machine.

Unlike desktop systems, embedded systems usually meet a strict restriction on using memory. It is required to allocate several class files on memory to run a Java program. A Java class file contains such data including a constant pool, class overview, fields information, and methods information. Some of them are used merely for a debugging purpose, others for a program execution. This paper analyzes the internal structure, or format of the class files used for embedded Java systems. We also investigate how much memory will be necessary for each part of the class files when the files are allocated in memory. The experiment was performed on the simpleRTJ, an open-source commercial embedded Java system.
Dedicated-purpose embedded Java system usually takes such model that all class files are converted into a single ROM Image by the ROMizer in the host computer, and then the Java virtual machine in the embedded system executes the image. Defining the ROM Image is a very important issue for embedded system with limited memory resource and low-performance processor since the format directly influences on the memory usage and effectiveness of accessing entries in classes. In this paper we have analyzed the ROMizer and especially the format of the ROM image implemented in the simpleRTJ embedded Jana virtual machine. The analysis says that memory space can be saved up to 50% compared to the original class file and access speed exceeds up to six times with the use of the ROMizer. The result of this study will be applied to develop a more efficient ROMizer for a ROM-based embedded Java system.

Class area is a portion of memory where the constants, fields, and codes of the classes loaded into the Java virtual machine are kept. Knowing the size of the class area is very important especially for embedded Java system with limited memory resources. This paper induces a formula which makes it possible estimate the size of the area. The formula needs some constant values specific to target JVM implementation. We also show that these values can be found using some simple probe classes. An experimental result is included in this paper to confirm the correctness of our approach.
Java Card technology allows us to run Java applications on smart cards and other memory-constrained devices. Java Card technology supports high security, portability and ability of storing and managing multiple applications. However, constrained memory resources of the Java Card Platform hinder wide deployment of the Java Card applications. Therefore, in this paper we propose a bytecode optimization algorithm to use the memory of a Java Card efficiently. Our algorithm can reduce the size of the bytecode by sharing the memory of the parameters of the catch clause in the try-catch-finally sentence.

Uniview system is a client-server system that runs on heterogeneous distributed systems and supports the debugging of various kinds of programs. Its client system provides a unified debugging concept and interface on various debuggers of heterogeneous hosts. Its server system provides debugging services and features openness and scalability by interoperating with one or more debugger processes existing on the same host. Based on FSF(Free Software Foundation)'s gdb and Sun Microsystems's dbx. Uniview system supports C/C++ programming language in various UNIX environments as well as Windows environments. The proposed system was designed and implemented to support the JAVA language, which is prevalently used in recent heterogeneous distributed systems and was partly extended to make a clear analysis of JAVA class file structure. Sun Microsystems's Jdb supplied as a JAVA debugger has very limited functions compared to other programming language debugger. In this paper, Uniview as a JAVA debugging system was implemented to provide debugging technologies which are necessary to debug Java applications but missing in current JAVA language as well as to provide its users with various information.
