This study presumed that pre-service elementary teachers' stereotypical attitude toward foreign groups is critical factor to be considered in the context of Korean multicultural education. 422 pre-service elementary school teachers rated repeatedly seven ethnic groups on thirteen semantic differential scales which consist of four factors; attractiveness-unattractiveness, superiority-inferiority, rationality-irrationality, and aggressiveness-compliance. A series of repeated measure MANOVAs were used to test variability in pre-service elementary school teachers' stereotypical attitude across foreign groups. They rated Japanese the most positive, but Chinese the most negative, and others more or less positive in overall attitude. Their ratings of each ethnic group also varied across four attitude factors. Japanese and Whites were classified into the most attractive and superior, and moderately rational and aggressive groups. In contrast, Chinese were rated as the most unattractive, inferior, irrational, and moderately aggressive one. Southeast Asians were rated as attractive, compliant, and inferior one. In contrast, Arabians were rated as unattractive, aggressive, and moderately superior one. Finally, North Koreans were rated moderately superior, the most aggressive and irrational one. All these findings were discussed in terms of multicultural education in Korea.
To find out the reference data of the school food service system, I serveyed four primary schools in Seoul, Korea and Nara, Japan respectively. The school children and their parents of whom arbitrary selected two classes among each primary school, were taken the questionaire about the present school food service system and their favorate food. The results were as follows; 1) 74.8% of Korean and Japanese children, and 92.5% of their parents were in favor of school food service. 2) Korean childrin wanted more amount of food and less salty taste. 3) Korean and Japanese children and their parents believed that the school food service system correct children's unbalanced diet. 4) Korean children wished more kinds of foods, western-styled cooking and that the food would be served in warm state. 5) Korean parents wanted that school food service system should be natural and better quality food material, and teacher should educate good eating habit. 6) Korean school children prefer yogurt, cuttle-fish, chicken, bean-curd, tomato, orange, dried laver, sweet potato, pine-mushroom in each food group. In conclusion, school food service system should be enough to meet children's good nutrition status, and the menu would be selected with consideration of children's preference and Korean traditional diet habit. Good table manner and eating all kinds of foods should be targht by school food service system as well as preparing good quality of food.
This study investigated pre-service elementary teachers' understanding of the basic concepts of and their attitudes toward astronomy in Korea and Japan. The survey instrument called the Astronomy Diagnostic lest (ADT) that was developed by the Collaboration for Astronomy Education Research (CAER) in 1998 was used and modified to tailor to the two countries' contexts, including 12 items written in the two languages, Korean and Japanese. The attitudes toward astronomy were examined by the Survey of Attitudes toward Astronomy (SATA), which was developed by Zeilik et al. in 1999. Cronbach's alpha of this sample of the study was 0.69, while the reliability of SATA was 0.87. All the pre-service elementary teachers in both Korea and Japan showed a low-level understanding of the basic concepts of astronomy. 38% of Korean pre-service elementary teachers had correct answers to the questions regarding the basic conceptions of astronomy, while 37% of Japanese participants had correct answers to them. Although there was no statistically significant difference between Korean and Japanese pre-service elementary teachers, Korean teachers scored higher than Japanese participants in SATA. A significant difference, however, was revealed in the categories of cognitive competence and value of the attitudes toward astronomy (p <.05). In addition, it was found that both Korean and Japanese pre-service elementary teachers scored less than 40% about the basic concepts of astronomy and that they obtained lower scores than the US college students with regard to the attitudes toward astronomy.

The purpose of this paper was to explore the teaching materials in the Korean and Japanese high school Home Economics textbooks from the perspective of green life education. Although sustainable living at home has been emphasized as one of the main issues of Home Economics since the first curriculum period, green growth education has reinforced in the 2009 revised curriculum. The content analyses had been done to explore the teaching materials of five areas in the 6 Korean and 4 Japanese high school Home Economics textbooks through two checking steps. The material form of table-figure-pictures was the most frequently shown in both Korean and Japanese textbooks. Green life-teaching materials were more likely in the area of household management/consumer activity than in any other ones. All textbooks of both countries have included the green life-teaching materials according to the elements of contents mentioned in the curricula. The quantity and contents of the materials were some what differ by textbooks, so home economics teacher need to cross check the all textbooks to select useful information although the textbooks have included various types of green materials over the 5 areas. Home Economics curriculum need to actively and concretely include the green growth educational elements suggested by the previous study.
This article presents a one and half-year process of Lesson Study conducted at a K-8 school in an urban district in the eastern U.S. Lesson Study, a Japanese form of professional development that centers on collaborative study of live classroom lessons, has spread rapidly in the U.S. since 1999 and has been argued as a promising alternative model for teacher-led school reform through professional development. The Lesson Study group described here was composed of five teachers, one administrator, and one instructional improvement coordinator belonging to the participant school and two instructional super-intendants from the school district. Data was collected from October 2007 to February 2009 and a qualitative case study method was employed for this study. Drawing a case of Lesson Study, this article intended to show how Lesson Study group members participated in planning, teaching, observing, discussing, and improving lessons collaboratively for student learning by enhancing teacher professional competence so that find directions for future implementation in Korea. This article investigates (1) process of Lesson Study, (2) issues Lesson Study group members mainly dealt with, and (3) changes have taken place in Lesson Study as it is conducted over time. (4) Finally, this article concludes with challenges to adopting Lesson Study successfully in Korea.

This study suggests the application of library assisted instruction(LAI) by analyzing Japanese social studies text-books that are configured for the library assisted instruction and cooperative instruction. The results of the analysis found that the use of a variety of materials and curriculum integrated skills instruction is reflected in the social studies text-books in Japan. Based on the results, this study suggested the strategies of the application of library assisted instruction(LAI) in three separated proposals. revision of related laws, organizational joint between teacher librarian and subject teachers, textbooks development for Information literacy instruction.
This study emphasized on the facts of the preparation for monk military with the confucian Jungbong Joheon against the invasion of Japanese military in the time of Japanese invasion of Korea and the martyrdom in the combat of Cheongju fortress and the 1st, the 2nd combats of Geumsan fortress. Especially, tens of thousands of Monk soldiers under the reverend general Yeonggyu at the very first time uprisen in the Buddhist world and let the rebellion continue nationwide as relying on his teacher Cheongheo Hyujeong and his co-monks. The record related to such monk military was found in 'Jinsanmirukchohongi (珍山彌勒寺招魂記)': the reverend general Yeonggyu and monk military officers (義兵將 判官僧 1 person, 義兵將僧 8 persons, 從事官僧 2 persons, 軍官僧 1 person), but in the record of the Jongyong monastery, it is said, 'the reverend Yeonggyu and his soldiers'. The soldiers of the reverend Yeong'gyu are right the monk troop, the existence of about 20 persons is confirmed in the chronicles and other sorts of literary collections. However, other information was hardly found in those sources, so I look forward to having further researches on the details of other monk solders with their dharma names and conducts which they did with patriotism.
The developmental process of scutes in the eightspine stickleback, Pungitius sinensis kaibarae (Tanaka), was investigated. The scutes appeared first on the caudal peduncle at 13mm and then on the thoracoabdominal part at 16mm. The scutes continued to develop and then the trachurus type of scute arrangement was completed at about 20mm. Finally the number of scutes was stabilized as 32 - 33 in the fish over 22mm. The developmental state of scutes was different according to part of body but most scutes except those of anteriormost part entered into late stage at about 25mm. The scutes of anteriormost part remained as scute of middle stage even though the fish became adults. All scutes were formed around neuromasts of lateral line. Few anterior plates(up to five plates) had additional neuromasts above the plates. But scale material was not accumulated around the additional neuromasts. Relationship between Korean and Japanese eightspine stickleback and the taxonomic meaning of the additional neuromasts were discussed.
Objectives : Previous research on texts specializing in acupuncture and moxibustion in Korea have mostly been focused on those written in the Joseon period, leaving an academic void in the modern and contemporary eras. This research on the "Yeongsochimgugyeong" was undertaken to help readers' understanding of the text and to provide basic material for further research on modern-contemporary education of acupuncture and moxibustion. Methods : The original text of "Yeongsochimgugyeong" was examined along with books and news articles on related people. Information that was difficult to obtain through written documents was supplemented by interviews with people who knew about the situation at the time. The findings were organized as 1) the author and related people and 2) introduction of "Yeongsochimgugyeong". Results and Conclusions : The original text of "Yeongsochimgugyeong" was written by teacher Jeon, Gwangok, interpreted and annotated by his disciple Gwon, Yeongjun. It is presumed that they wrote this book as educators of Korean medicine for educational purposes on acupuncture and moxibustion before and after the Japanese colonial era. The book is consisted of an overview of meridianology, details on points and meridians, supplementing and draining methods, similar to the current text book. The contents and expressions of "Yeongsochimgugyeong" reflect the state of acupuncture and moxibustion education of the early and mid $20^{th}$ century, making it a valuable resource.

Methods: The books were investigated from the first to the last pages and compared with other textbooks published during the same period. Results: The origin of these books was from Hubinyaoshu (Manual of Nursing) published in China in 1904. They were translated by Edmunds, a missionary nurse from America, and Chang Chai-Sun, a teacher at the first nursing school in Korea, along with inspection by Korean teachers who were fluent in English. Kanho Kyokwaseo are user-friendly textbooks in that they are written mainly in Hangul; Chinese and English are added in cases of explicating western scientific terminology and medical terminology, with notes at the top, on the left, and on the right of the page. The contents emphasize reporting and submission to supervisors and doctors. Surgical nursing occupies the largest chapter. Disinfection and hygiene, the advantages of western modern medicine, are dealt with repeatedly and importantly. Conclusion: Kanho Kyokwaseo was widely used as the first and only nursing textbook published before Japanese occupation and as a publication having upgraded the level of textbooks.
