  • Objectives: This study examined the national health promotion plan 2010 in order to identify the agenda and issues to be considered for the improvement of the evaluation of the plan and future planning. In specific, the examination focused on both the planning model and practical aspects of the planning work. With regard to the planning model, attention was directed to the theoretical background, logical framework and assumptions involved in the design. Also, an observation was made in comparison with Japanese $\ulcorner$Health Japan 21$\lrcorner$ and American $\ulcorner$Healthy People 2010$\lrcorner$ which provided main reference to our original health plan 2010 and revised health plan 2010 respectively. From this observation it was found that all the plans of three countries, except our original health plan 2010, basically employed a model of educational and ecological approaches to health promotion planning. As predicted, the practical constraints on the health promotion policy and programs in Korea led to many difficulties in attaining the rationality and validity of the plan. The short period of time afforded for the planning work, the limited availability of relevant data and research findings, and the lack of experiences and competent personnel in health promotion planning were main factors impeding the planning work performance. The observation and analysis of the National Health Promotion Plan 2010 suggest two main implications for the future planning of health promotion. First, it will be both theoretically and practically appropriate to maintain the current planning model basically as it is. Second, there are many practical problems that may impede effective planning for health promotion, thus continuous efforts should be made to remove or alleviate such problems.

  • Eleven Tropical Cyclone (TC) intensity guidance models in the western North Pacific have been validated over 2008~2014 based on various analysis methods according to the lead time of forecast, year, month, intensity, rapid intensity change, track, and geographical area with an additional focus on TCs that influenced the Korean peninsula. From the evaluation using mean absolute error and correlation coefficients for maximum wind speed forecasts up to 72 h, we found that the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting model (HWRF) outperforms all others overall although the Global Forecast System (GFS), the Typhoon Ensemble Prediction System of Japan Meteorological Agency (TEPS), and the Korean version of Weather and Weather Research and Forecasting model (KWRF) also shows a good performance in some lead times of forecast. In particular, HWRF shows the highest performance in predicting the intensity of strong TCs above Category 3, which may be attributed to its highest spatial resolution (~3 km). The Navy Operational Global Prediction Model (NOGAPS) and GFS were the most improved model during 2008~2014. For initial intensity error, two Japanese models, Japan Meteorological Agency Global Spectral Model (JGSM) and TEPS, had the smallest error. In track forecast, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and recent GFS model outperformed others. The present results has significant implications for providing basic information for operational forecasters as well as developing ensemble or consensus prediction systems.

  • Daily temperature data produced by harmonic analysis of monthly climate summary have been used as an input to plant phenology model. This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of the harmonic based daily temperature data in prediction of major phenological developments and to apply the results in improving decision support for agricultural production in relation to the climate change scenarios. Daily maximum and minimum temperature data for a climatological normal year (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 1971-2000) were produced by harmonic analysis of the monthly climate means for Seoul weather station. The data were used as inputs to a thermal time - based phenology model to predict dormancy, budburst, and flowering of Japanese cherry in Seoul. Daily temperature measurements at Seoul station from 1971 to 2000 were used to run the same model and the results were compared with the harmonic data case. Leaving no information on annual variation aside, the harmonic based simulation showed 25 days earlier release from endodormancy, 57 days longer period for maximum cold tolerance, delayed budburst and flowering by 14 and 13 days, respectively, compared with the simulation based on the observed data. As an alternative to the harmonic data, 30 years daily temperature data were generated by a stochastic process (SIMMETEO + WGEN) using climatic summary of Seoul station for 1971-2000. When these data were used to simulate major phenology of Japanese cherry for 30 years, deviations from the results using observed data were much less than the harmonic data case: 6 days earlier dormancy release, 10 days reduction in maximum cold tolerance period, only 3 and 2 days delay in budburst and flowering, respectively. Inter-annual variation in phenological developments was also in accordance with the observed data. If stochastically generated temperature data could be used in agroclimatic mapping and zoning, more reliable and practical aids will be available to climate change adaptation policy or decision makers.

  • There could be different ways of perception, emotions, and behaviors facing on unfair situation according to the culture background by which people have been affected. We investigated whether definition, feelings, and behaviors in 4 countries (Korea, China, Japan, and the US) would differ in terms of unfair situations. We further examined the relationship between new self-construal model (subjectivity-objectivity-autonomy model) and behaviors resulted from unfair situations. Three hundred seventeen participants (87 Koreans, 71 Chinese, 80 Japanese, and 79 Americans) took part in this research. We found that all countries defined unfair situation as "having a disadvantage or blame that one did not done by him or her" with the highest percentage, but there was a different percentage according to countries. Next, Chinese felt disappointment or betray from the situations highly while others expressed anger with the largest portion. In the area of behaviors, three countries in Asia answered "no behaviors" with the highest percentage while Americans mostly responded "direct expressions". In terms of self-construal model, subjective self was high in Chinese and Koreans while autonomy was high in Chinese and American. Japanese showed objective self with the highest. Implications and future research are discussed.

  • This study aims to clarify the architectural characteristics of three houses of Choseon Exhibition. Exposition/exhibitions were thought to be a model for the world. It shows the real status of the development, and thinking with visions at that times; therefore, exhibited house models would be a good source for what to be considered for the ideal houses of that times. Through the study, we could find out as belows. 1. The houses exhibited conserved the sitting-on-floor living style, otherwise the most proposals for house improvement suggested a chair-and-table style because of its hygienic quality and integration of the life at home and at work(school, too). 2. The spacial scheme for-family prior over for-guest was emphasized, but models at the exhibition were structured with Japanese traditional spacial program, such as Jashiki(座敷), Kyakunoma(客の間) or Tsuginoma(次の間), which were all Tatami-floored. 3. Through this exhibition, it is clarified that the architectural society in colonial Korea also tried to improve the modern housings, not only direct reception of the developed proposals. These houses was planned with the acceptance of the locality, such like Ondol, a floor heating facility which the Japanese engineer improve the efficiency. 4. Also these exhibited houses became a start to recognize a house as a product, and spurred on commercialization. As the result, we could find out that these exhibited houses accepted the modern housing proposals selectively, and that even if the exhibitions shows the advance in usual these houses were planned with the very conservative notions.

  • We investigated leaf disease intensity of Kalopanax septemlobus (prickly castor oil tree) caused by the parasitic fungus Mycosphaerella acanthopanacis, in thirty natural host populations in the Japanese Archipelago. The disease intensity observed for individual trees were analyzed using a generalized additive model as a function of tree size, tree density, climatic terms and spatial trend surface. Individual tree size and conspecific tree density were shown to have significant negative and positive effects on disease intensity, respectively. The findings suggest that the probability of disease infection is partly determined by dispersal of infection agents (ascospores) from the fallen leaves on the ground, which can be enhanced by aggregation of host trees in a forest stand. Regional-scale spatial bias was also present in disease intensity; the populations in northern Japan and southern Kyushu were more severely infected by the fungus than those in southwestern Honshu and Shikoku. Regional variation of disease intensity was explained by both climatic factors and a trend surface term, with a latitudinal cline detected, which increases towards the north. Further research should be conducted in order to understand all of the factors generating the latitudinal cline detected in this study.

  • Korean Oriental Medicine has experienced a dramatic status change since the 19th century. Korean Oriental Medicine had been the only authentic medicine, but lost its status and fell as an illegal medicine through the Japanese rule, and recently revived successfully. The dramatic change of Korean Oriental Medicine needs an explanation. This paper explored the cause of the dramatic change and found the following things. First, the medical policy of the State directly influenced to the status of Korean Oriental Medicine. During the Japanese rule, the medical policy for Korean Oriental Medicine was very oppressive. After Liberation, a kind of noninterference policy was carried out. The change of the medical policy gave direct influence to the status of Korean Oriental Medicine. Second, the needs for medical service have been expanded. At the same time, the concern for tradition has been increased. And the supply of Korean Oriental Medicine has also increased by the establishments of Korean Oriental Medicine departments. Third, the internal growth of Korean Oriental Medicine brought to elevating the status of Korean Oriental Medicine. After 1945, Korean Oriental Medicine endeavored to strengthen the organization and to activate the academic society. Based on the above factors, Korean Oriental Medicine has achieved a remarkable status change during last several decades. We can not skip Korean Oriental Medical doctors' desperate efforts to enhance the status of Korean Oriental Medicine. Korean Oriental Medicine achieved the modernization. It's difficult to find similar case. It can be a model of modernization of tradition.

  • Noninvasive low intensity ultrasound has been shown to be an effective means of accelerating bone fracture repair in both animal and clinical studies. The effects of ultrasound stimulation on bone repair after fibular osteotomy were assessed in a rabbit fibular fracture model. Bilateral closed fibular fractures were made in skeletally mature male White Japanese rabbits. In this study, 24 subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups: experimental group 1 (n=12), and experimental group 2 (n=12). Experimental group 1 received 0.875 MHz continuous ultrasound and Experimental group 2 was treated with 3 MHz continuous u1trasound. The ultrasound intensity was 50 $mW/cm^2$ and treatment time was 10 minutes for every session in both groups. In each rabbit, one fibula served as a control and the other was subjected to ultrasound treatment 5 times per week for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, rabbits were sacrificed and the ratios of the area between the trabeculae and bone marrow of the fibulae were calculated. At the end of the experimental period, 14 of the 24 rabbits were excluded due to complications from surgery or inadequate fracture status for this study. There was no statistically significant difference in the trabeculae area between experimental leg and control leg in experimental group 1 and experimental group 2 (p>0.05). And there was also no statistic-statistically significant difference between experimental group 1 and experimental group 2 according to ultrasound treatment frequencies, 0.875 MHz and 3 MHz (p>0.05). These data suggest that in Japanese white rabbits, low intensity ultrasound stimulation does not facilitate fracture repair nor is there any difference in fracture repair results between ultrasound frequencies, 0.875 MHz and 3 MHz.

  • This study examines how disability pride of people having acquired visual impairment can be constructed. The theme is explored with the Japanese TV drama "Challenged". The paradigms regarding construction of disability pride and acceptance of disability are fundamentally different. In this context it can be said that a criticism of disability acceptance theory has something with a criticism of medical model of disability. It is main character Hanawa and chairman of teachers, and principal who were noticeable specifically at the point of forming disability pride, and these characters show a common feature that social idealism is embodied in their awareness. Other characters of the drama show a change of their consciousness to social idealism. As a conclusion this study suggests importances of humanistic and social scientific analysis as well as of educational effects achieved by means of drama.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the determinants of consumer's repurchase intention in the foreign direct sales shopping malls, focusing on the Japanese customers. Research model of the study is composed of seven independent variables (price competitiveness, product diversity, reputation, country-of-origin image, ease of use, delivery service, after service), a mediating variable (trust) and a dependent variable (repurchase intention). The results of this study show that trust is an important factor affecting the repurchase intention of customers. Customers' trust is affected by the reputation, country-of-origin image, ease of use, delivery service, after service. However, price competitiveness and product diversity, which are hypothesized to affect the trust, are not statistically significant. This study will provide a basis for future research on the foreign direct sales area. In addition, it will provide practical information useful in launching and/or operating the foreign direct sales malls.
