  • This study was carried out to scrutinize possibility of manufacturing pitch pine (Pinus rigida) glued laminated timber in order to add values of pitch pine trees. Also, it was investigated to improve bending performance of pitch pine glulam. Pitch pine was imported as one of major plantation species in Korean peninsula. Machine stress rated grades of pitch pine lumber mostly ranged between E7 and E9. which grades were more or less inferior to producing high quality glulam. However, the adhesive properties between pitch pine and pitch pine, and between pitch pine and Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Carr.), such as shear bond strength, wood failure rate and de-lamination rate of bonded layer submerged in cold and boiling water, were higher than Korean Standard criteria. These properties are essential for manufacturing glulam with single species or multiple species. The modulus of rupture (MOR) of pitch pine glulam exceeded the criterion of Korean Standard for glulam strength grade but modulus of elasticity (MOE) was lower than the criterion. On the other hand, the bending performances (MOR and MOE) were improved 20 percent by mixing with Japanese larch laminar. It is effective to arrange higher quality Japanese larch laminar at the outer layer of glulam for improving bending performances. In conclusion, it is possible to use low quality pitch pine as laminar of structural glulam for adding values of pitch pine.

  • The Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi [Lamb.] Carriere) is a major timber species in Korea. However, studies on bucking rates and merchantable logs of this species are insufficient in South Korea. To bridge these gaps, in this study, the bucking rate of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi [Lamb.] Carriere) was computed and the number of long logs and merchantable log volumes were analyzed. Sample trees were bucked according to the log grade for trading, and collected from a forest field in Gangwon Province. The bucking rate of all Japanese larch logs was >89%. The highly profitable 2-4 logs of 3.6 m length from trees with ≤30 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) and 5-6 logs with ≥34 cm DBH were produced. The bucking rate of long logs was >84%; thus, Japanese larch was found to be suitable for the supply of high-grade timber. Additionally, to follow reasonable wood supply plans, merchantable volume tables were offered based on 3.6 m-long number of logs and small-end diameter classes. Understanding the proportion of merchantable log volumes, bucking rates, and the number of long and short logs has large-scale applications in practical forestry.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the tensile properties of metal plate connector for the domestic major softwoods, such as Korean red pine, Korean white pine, and Japanese larch. The maximum tensile load of Korean red pine was 3,612kgf in AA type, it was 1.2 and 1.7 times higher load than that of Japanese larch and Korean white pine. In EA type, it was 2,704kgf, and 1.1 and 1.5 times higher than the loads of Japanese larch and Korean white pine. The failure modes of metal plate connector were metal plate withdrawal, plate tensile failure, and wood shear block failure. The failure mode of Korean red pine connector was tensile failure of plate, that is reason of the high tensile load resistance for metal plate connections in Korean red pine. The mechanical properties of metal plate connector could be predicted by the Foschi model parameter. In the initial stage, the Korean red pine connector was stiffer than the other species. The design values for metal plate connector per tooth was 25, 22, and 15kgf for Korean red pine, Japanese larch, and Korean white pine in AA type and 19, 17, and 13kgf in EA type.

  • A relationship between drying resistance and moisture content was found for 24, 27 and 30mm thick boards, and 45, 51 and 57mm thick dimensions of Japanese larch. Dahurian larch and radiata pine in order to modify the kiln schedule by using time schedules. The amount of drying resistance for Dahurian larch lumber was the highest, and radiata pine lumber was the lowest, on the basis of the same moisture content range. Drying resistance increased curvilinearly as moisture content decreased, and was higher for thicker lumber than for thinner lumber, at a given moisture content. Combined drying resistance for the three board thicknesses and the three dimension thicknesses showed a comparatively strong for radiata pine and a Japanese larch, while a weak correlation for Dahurian larch as a function of two independent variables, thickness and moisture content of lumber, respectively.

  • The characteristics of radio-frequency/vacuum drying Japanese larch boxed heart round logs with 150 mm and 210 mm in diameter and 2,500 mm in length, subjected to compressive loading, after the pretreatment of kerf were investigated. The results of this study were as the follows: The drying time of about 120 hours~130 hours was needed from green to about 15 percent of moisture content. The gradient of final moisture content for all specimens was very gentle in both longitudinal and transverse directions owing to dielectric heating. The surface checks seriously occurred although the occurrence extent of surface check for the kerfed specimens was slight compared with that for the control specimens because drying stress was relieved by kerf. The occurrence of surface checks for the L-specimen was more serious than that for the S-specimen.

  • The characteristic changes in weight, moisture content, and dimension at the early adsorptiondesorption stage of PEG-treated Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi), mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica) and sargent cherry (Prunus sargentii) woods were investigated. The wood samples were treated with PEG 1000, 2000 and 4000, and conditioned at the relative 98%, 65% and 20% for humidities of one week. The weight of Korean pine, Japanese larch and sargent cherry woods treated with PEG 1000 and 2000 during the adsorption-desorption was significantly changed, but mongolian oak was slightly changed. Moisture content was highly Moisture content was highly fluctuated by the change of relative humidity in the three species except oak wood. Although the weight of PEG-treated wood; however, changes in dimension could be prevented by PEG treatment in all species tested.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a summary of assignment design values according to domestic softwood structural lumber grading rules. Allowable stresses for visually graded lumber were determined from basic data on small. clear specimens. The data corrected for variability such as natural defects and other factors. The procedure adopted by Japan was used for assigning allowable design values. Strength ratios in relation to each defect were taken from ASTM D 245-81. Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.), Korean red pine(Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis Gordon) and Needle fir(Abies holophylla Max) were applied to this study. The calculated allowable stresses were same in Korean pine and Korean red pine. These values were highest in Japanese larch lowest in Needle fir. So, it is desirable for these species to be classified into different catagories Species Group. However, accurate comparison in design values on lumber grading rules among U.S., Japan and Korea was somewhat difficult. And full scale testing will be necessary for accurate determination of the correction factors to setting up design values.

  • In an effort to encourage the development of value added engineered applications for small diameter round timber, research is being conducted to develop and verify design guidelines for connections with specific application to round timbers. The objective of this research is to provide potential users with a number of viable connection options applicable in the fabrication of engineered, round wood structural components and systems. Target uses include trusses, built up flange beams and space frames. This paper presents information on a mortised steel plate connection fabricated using powder driven nails in 6 cm diameter Japanese Larch. The design load for PDN connections are around 1.3 kN per nail with strip and 0.8 kN per nail without stripe. The design model for PDN connectors could be chosen by the number of nails. If the number of nails are more than the critical number between nail bearing and wood failure, the wood failure model could be the way to design the structure safely. The wood failure model needs to be studied more but the model could be the tensile and cleavage mixed failure model.

  • The flame retardancy, such as carbonized length and area, of four plank type wood products by the spreading concentration and impregnation time of flame retardant were measured according to standard of the Nation Fire Agency in Republic of Korea. To measure the flame retardancy, Korean pine plywood, Japanese larch plywood, Japanese cypress planks, and perforated birch plywood boards were treated with self-development flame retardant by 300 and 500 g/㎡ spreading concentration and those were compared with control specimen. In general, the flame retardant performance of wood products improved as the spreading concentration of flame retardant increased. Except for Japanese larch plywood, there was no significant difference in the flame retardant performance by the spreading concentration. The flame retardant performance of perforated birch plywood board was positively correlated up to 60 minutes of impregnation time, but then gradually decreased. These results about the flame retardancy of wood products by spreading concentration and impregnation time were expected to be basic data for improving flame-retardant treated wood.

  • It is well-known fact that dimensional stability of wood is greatly enhanced by acetylation of wood. This dimensional stability results from bulking of the reacted acetate within the cell wall, which reduces further swelling when the modified woods corne into contact with water or water vapor. The purpose of this research was to determine the water absorption and dimensional stability of the acetylated solid wood in liquid water and in humidity tests. Radiata pine, Siberian larch, and Japanese larch were acetylated. Antiswelling efficiency(ASE) and equilibrium moisture content(EMC) of acetylated wood, at 95% RH and $20^{\circ}C$ after 4weeks, was quite dependent on WPG, but was not dependent on species.
