일본 제조업에 있어서 정보시스템 통합기술의 전략적 활용목적에 관한 실증분석 (An Empirical Examination on the Strategic Use of System Integration Technology in Japanese Manufacture)

  • The application of computers and information technologies progressed with remarkable pace has paved the way for technological innovation toward the efficient integration of various functions in a manufacturing system. Actually it is observed that the greater part of manufacturing companies already initiated significant efforts to integrate information systems and attained the level of integration to some extent. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the strategic direction that manufacturing firms are pursuing through integrating information systems. Using the extensive data gathered from Japanese manufacturers, it is attempted to find the differences in competitive priorities and action programmes between the companies with high and low-level system integration. Our empirical data reveals that the manufacturers with highly integrated system are focusing their competitive capabilities on the rapid design change and new product introduction, and accordingly they place a greater emphasis on the action programmes related to design, process and quality improvement. As a conclusion, highly integrated firms tend to pursue new product development strategy more intensively, thereby they want to be a preemptor in the new market through exploiting technological advantages of integrated manufacturing system.

The Motivating Role of Sentiment in ESG Performance: Evidence from Japanese Companies

  • The paper investigates investor sentiment's role in boosting Japanese companies to enhance their environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) performance. Using ESG scores of 367 firms between 2005 and 2019 from the ASSET4 database, we find that negative sentiment in the previous year, both firm and market level, can be a stimulation for the company's commitments to its ESG activities next year. Notably, the moderating effect of the business sector and economic cycle on the sentiment-ESG inference are detected in our study differentiating between corporate and market sentiment, which have never been reported before. In detail, we discover that the impact of firm-specific sentiment is less pronounced for high-sensitive ESG firms. On the other hand, the driving force of market sentiment on corporate social behaviors weakens when economic recessions happen. Our results are robust after controlling for potential endogeneity issues and using alternative proxies for market sentiment.

  • The successful knowledge and information based companies facilitate to restructure the industry and strengthen the national competitiveness in the future. The advent of information age provides us new challenge because the information breakthrough can play a pivotal role in terms of knowledge transfer in the human resource management. This research focuses on best practices of human management and contrasting the human resource strategy of Japanese and American firms respectively, Based on this, we suggest the strategic alternatives of the described HR problems as well as the way of effective human resource management for Korean venture firms. We have reviewed the previous international and domestic literatures in details to understand HR liabilities of newness of venture firms in terms of the population ecology. The objective of this research is to solve the HR problems that Korean firms faced with.

  • Metal Injection Molding(MIM) is a technology without any mechanical processing, which is a promising area backed up by nano powder technology developed in late 1990's. The market was about 24 billion U$ in 1999. Many applications are made in process development, uses, powder making, hindering and sintering, of which order is in terms of the number of patents. This technologies are mainly developed by US firms, and applied by Japanese firms. Europe and Korea are still catch-up stage. More efforts should be made in this field because new opportunities are opening, thanks to nano technology.

  • This is an analysis of international mobile displays industry. There has been severe competition in market and technology. In technology, There has been competition between Japan, USA and Korea. On the other hand, there has been competition in the products market between Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Recently Korea has catched-up Japan in mid-size display industry. The response of Japanese firms are as follows: technological collaboration with Taiwanese firms in mid-size and concentration in small and large size displays. New competition, however, has started, since new technologies such as TFT-LCD and OELD have been used in products.

  • Set-up reduction is an important aspect of the Japanese Just-In-Time (JIT) and Zero Inventory (ZI) concepts. In this paper, we first analyze the effects of set-up cost reduction on tatal inventory, average lot size and forecast horizon in the dynamic lot size model. We also examine the various effects of set-up cost reduction in the EOQ model and explain why many Japanese firms try to cut set-up cost and/or set-up time greatly.

일본의 소비자운동, 소비자정책, 소비자지향적 경영에 관한 소고 (Consumer Movements, Consumer Policies, and Firms' Policies for Consumer Satisfaction in Japan)

  • This study reviewed both consumer movement and consumer policy of government in Japan. Their evolution since the Second World War will be reviewed and compared multiple periods, after the Second World war till the late 1960s, the period of the 1970s, the period after 1980s. In addition, firms' consumer satisfaction policies were briefly reviewed in order to fully understand consumer protection activities in japan. This study found four major characteristics of consumer protection activities led by both voluntary consumer organizations and government. First, consumer protection policy of government in Japan after the late 1960s was more active than that of consumer movement by consumer organizations. Second, major concerns for consumer protection were variant over time. The major goal in the first stage of period(during the 1960s) was to protect consumer safety from defective and dangerous goods and services, whereas the goal after the late 1970s was extended to cover various areas concerning the quality of life. Those areas refer to the quality of services, the way of sales and marketing, pollution of environment, and the quality of consuming life. Third, this study found that computer networks, aiming at collecting and analyzing the very useful to improve the consuming life of Japanese by providing sufficient consumer information to encourge rational choices of consumers. Forth, a close cooperation between the central and local administrations was crucial for the successful outcome In Japan This paper gives us useful guideline regarding how to improve consumer movement and govemments' policies for protecting consumer in Korea. In addition, other lessons on successful consumer satisfaction policies of Japanese firms may enable Korean firms to shape effective consumer policies of enhancing their competitiveness.

  • 본 연구는 경쟁환경의 불확실성이 제조업체와 유통업체의 결속, 신뢰, 장기지향성에 어떻게 영향을 주는지를 한국, 미국. 일본 제조업체를 통해 검증해 보았다. 이러한 연구는 경쟁환경의 불확실성에 대해서 한국의 제조업체만을 연구한 것이 아니라, 미국과 일본의 표본까지 확보하여 세국가를 비교 연구 하였다는 것에 커다란 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다. 설문은 제조업체를 대상으로 수집하였고, 구조방정식 모형분석을 통해 가설검증 하였다. 결과는 다음과 같다. 경쟁환경의 불확실성이 높을수록 결속이 높을 것이다는 한국과 일본에서는 기각되었고, 미국에서는 채택되었다. 경쟁환경의 불확실성이 높을수록 신뢰는 낮을 것이다는 한국에서는 채택되었고, 미국과 일본에서는 기각되었다. 신뢰가 높을수록 결속이 높을 것이다는 한국, 미국, 일본 세국가 모두에서 채택되었다. 경쟁환경이 불확실할수록 장기지향성은 낮아질 것이다는 한국과 미국에서는 기각되었고 일본에서는 채택되었다. 결속이 높을수록 장기지향성이 높을 것이다는 세국가 모두에서 채택되었다. 신뢰가 높을수록 장기지향성이 높을 것이다 또한 한국, 미국, 일본 세국가 모두에서 채택되었다.
