Railroad started from invention of stream locomotive at the beginning of the industrial revolution. Development of diesel and electric locomotives in railroad induced science and technology since the industrial revolution. Korean high-speed train so-called high-speed train project, is localized 86.7%(compared to price), 92%(compared to number of parts). This technology has been contributed to KTX since 2004. High-speed railway was developed to integrated system, which is contained high technology such as civil, mechanical and electrical technology. This effects to advanced technology across the board science, technology, industry. High-speed railway is fast, safe, comfortable, eco-friendly as next generation's representative transportation. Furthermore it is inaugurate the era of the new railroad. Korea is opened the high-speed railway following Japan, France, Germany, Spain. Korea became the fifth nation of the high-speed railway. It joins the rank of developed countries operating at the speed of 300km/h. Especially, KTX is emerging as advanced transportation with reducing logistics costs significantly due to time advantage and transportation revolution. The purpose of this study is to present the strategy through internal and external railway market's analysis for Korea railway system's globalization expansion(overseas expansion).
In order to cope with the ill-defined problem of human behavior being immanent uncertainty, several methodologies have been studied in game theoretic, social psychological and political science frameworks. As methods to arrange system elements systematically and draw out the consenting structural model concretively, ISM, FSM and DEMATEL based on graph theory etc. have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a modified structural modeling method to recognize the nature of problem. We introduce the statistical method to adjust the establishment levels in group decision situation. From this, it will become possible to obtain effectively and smoothly the structural model of group members in comparison with the traditional methods. Further we propose a procedure for achieving the consenting structural model of group members based on the structural modeling method. By applying the method to recognize the nature of ill-defined problems, it will be possible to solve the given problem effectively and rationally. In order to inspect the effectiveness of the method, we conduct a practical problem as an empirical study: "Behavior analysis of passengers for the Joban line of East Japan Railway Company after new railway service of Tsukuba Express opened".
Recent trend of sensor-less control of induction motor applied for commuter trains in Japan is introduced. Although many inverter-fed Induction motor driven trains have been produced so far, most of them were slip frequency based conventional V/f control system using shaft encoder. There arises a new trend to apply speed sensor-less vector control., for this inverter-fed induction motor drive system. The purpose of sensor-less control is to save, cost and improve system reliability. Several sensor-less systems now under testing on the actual railway company. This paper describes the survey of the fundamental structure and feature of representative sensor-less systems mentioned above.

The wide spread of DC electric railway systems such as urban rapid transits including heavy rail and light rail transits has significant ramification as the stray currents from return conductor rails can cause the electrochemical interference, that is, the electrolytic corrosion of both rails and outside underground metallic infrastructures. The immature understanding of either the railway authority who is responsible for establishing the necessary provisions at the design stage or the affected parties makes it difficult to prepare the optimum range of solutions for the long-pending interference problem. In Japan, however, numerous assessment studies have been carried out on the stray current interference, by which protective guidelines are provided by "Electrolysis Committee". In this paper, we review a guide book from "Tokyo Electrolysis Committee", namely, "Protective Methods for Stray Current Corrosion".
This paper studies on the benefit evaluation of urban railway construction project. We compares Korean Method with Japanese in calculating the generalized cost(GC) of a trip. In Japan, the disadvantage of transferring to another mode or line is included to calculate GC of trip. And environmental effects are contained directly as rail construction benefit. But in Korea, inconvenience of transferring facilities like stairways and passageway for riding a subway is not accounted to analyse benefit. As a result, there is a little investigate to improve and overcoming the inconvenience facilities of transfer, access, and egress. So, we suggest the containing the disadvantage measure of transferring facilities when subway riderships are forecasted. That will be reduced tile capital size of subway.
Recently, the Korean government is considering a policy of adopting competition in railway transportation, such as the establishment of a subsidiary company to Korail as a company to operate a part of the KTX line, the separation of deficit-running lines of local railways and the opening of railway transportation to private operators. The termination of local railway service, which is a major provider of public transportation, will not only deprive the public of a means of transportation but also lead to a decline in the quality of public transit in general. The termination of local railway service is being decisively affected by the national railway policy. The purpose of this thesis is to clarify local railway policy in Japan by studying the development and philosophy of the local railway policy of the Japanese National Railway (JNR).
This primary study describes the strategies for expanding the railway market to overseas. Therefore, I mainly reviewed and analysed the report of KRRI. Hereafter, I referred to the world railway market analysis, and benchmarked about Japan, France and Germany for high speed rail system of their export strategies to the world. After than, I suggested some measures for expanding strategies through analysing the problems. According to opening the KTX from Seoul to Busan, we have to think what the next step is. Like other countries of developing the high speed rail system, we have to try to export some kinds of system for further technology and industry development.
The intelligent safety system for level crossing which employs information and communication technology has been developed in USA and Japan, etc. But, in Korea, the relevant research has not been performed. In this paper, we analyze the cause of railway level crossing accidents and the inherent problem of the existing safety equipments. Based on analyzed results, we design the intelligent safety system which prevent collision between a train and a vehicle. This system displays train approaching information in real-time at roadside warning devices, informs approaching train of the detected obstacle in crossing areas, and is interconnected with traffic signal to empty the crossing area before train comes. Especially, we present the video based obstacle detection algorithm and verify its performance with prototype H/W since the abrupt obstacles in crossing areas are the main cause of level crossing accidents. We identify that the presented scheme detects both pedestrian and vehicle with good performance. Currently, we demonstrate developed railway crossing intelligence system at one crossing of Young-dong-seon line of Korail with Sea Train cockpit.
