  • The objective of this study was to monitor the regenerated process of natural vegetation on the rear-slope of Jangheung multi-purpose dam using the recycling eco-revegetation technique. The monitoring plots were established in May 2004 and the plots were monitored in May 2004 and October 2005. Flora, plant community structures, naturally introduced plants, death rates were monitored. The change of flora after wood chip mulching decreased in family and species, but the influence of vine tree was extended. The urbanization index declined. Naturally introduced species and death ratios at the monitoring plot had a tendency to a higher increase in the deciduous broad-leaved forest.

  • After carrying out on-the-spot observation targeting each farmhouse of large-scale environment-friendly agricultural district (LEAD), Suncheon, Sancheong, Jangheung, Yeongam, Hamyang, Okcheon, and Jeongseon in 2015, only one LEAD, a farmhouse in Jangheung had used sustainable compost coming out under their own non-antibiotic livestock. The soil pH and EC at a depth of 0-20 cm in the seven LEADs were ranged between 5.3-6.6 and $0.4-1.2dS\;m^{-1}$, respectively, with 0.03- 0.27% for T-N concentration, $22-322mg\;kg^{-1}$ for P, and $0.05-0.29mg\;kg^{-1}$, which were, in particular, low a farmhouse in Jeongseon. When intensively surveying on each farmhouse of Suncheon, Jangheung, and Okcheon for a growing period, seasonal soil pH was maintained above 6.0 and high in a farmhouse in Okcheon, with similar soil EC observed among the three LEADs. Seasonal soil T-N was 0.1% higher on the farmhouse in Suncheon than other two LEADs, with higher seasonal soil P observed on the farmhouse in Okcheon and higher soil K in the Jangheung. T-N concentration in rice (Oryza sativa L.) crops was the highest in Jangheung, and concentrations of T-N, P, and K decreased in a season. Plant height and number of tillers per hill were the highest on the farmhouse in Okcheon, where was similar or low plant diameter and SPAD levels compared to other two LEADs. Dry weight (DW) before harvest was ranged between 52-63 g, and DW, rough rice yield (kg), brown rice/rough rice (%), brown rice yield (kg), head rice (%), and broken rice (%) were not significantly different among the three LEADs. Total annual gross production ha-1 was the highest on the farmhouse in Okcheon (16,230,000 won) planting with high class of variety, 'Milky queen' at early maturation, which was expected to be increased on an agricultural income. However, high amount of fertilizer was applied for growing the following crops on the farmhouse in Okcheon, affecting the highest balance of T-N, P, and K more than $200kg\;ha^{-1}$.

  • In this study, we analyzed the nutrient composition and ${\beta}$-glucan content in Lentinula edodes fruiting bodies from different collection areas. Four types of free sugars were detected by HPLC, and the range of trehalose prevalence was 0.83% to 9%. The highest total amino acid content was observed from sawdust media cultivation of Lentinula edodes fruiting bodies, collected in China (JMI10050)The highest essential amino acid content, assessed by log cultivation of Lentinula edodes fruiting bodies, collected in Jangheung (JMI10059). Sixteen free amino acids were detected in Lentinula edodes fruiting bodies, and the major free amino acids were histidine, glutamic acid, and arginine. The highest essential amino acid including threonine, valine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, histidine, and lysine was fromsawdust media cultivation of Lentinula edodes fruiting bodies collected in China(JMI10052). The ${\beta}$-glucan content from log cultivation of Lentinula edodes fruiting bodies collected in Korea (JMI10059 and JMI10066) was higher than that from sawdust media cultivation of Lentinula edodes fruiting bodies collected in China. The highest ${\beta}$-glucan content was observed from log cultivation of Lentinula edodes fruiting bodies collected in Korea (JMI10066).

  • The American bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana was imported from Japan for farming for the human consumption in 1970's and introduced populations were a great threat to native habitats in the pond and lake ecosystem. However, it is thought that the population of bullfrog has rapidly declined for past years in Korea. In this study, we investigated the intra-genetic diversity of R. catesbeiana habitated in Korea. The nucleotide sequences of 1,215bp mitochondrial ND1/tRNA region in bullfrogs sampled from 5 sites in Jeollanamdo were analyzed and compared to the original sequence of R. catesbeiara reported in Genbank. The nucleotide similarity between Korean and North American bullfrog was ranged from 98.7% to 100% based on kimura-2-parameter distance. In addition, bullfrogs analyzed in this study were clustered into two groups with one including Jangheung and the other including Gwangju populations in the neighbor-joining tree. North American R. catesbeiana was grouped in Jangheung cluster, indicating that there is the very low genetic difference between Korean and North American populations. The maximum parsimony tree in which North American R. catesbeiana was set as an outgroup suggests that Jangheung group represents the introduced population to Korea. Taken together, the results indicate that the population of R. catesbeiana in Korea has not segregated geographically yet, after the introduction.

  • Anthracnose symptoms on young cabbages were found in cabbage nursery fields in Jangheung area of Korea in 1998. The symptoms developed on seedlings, leaves, and stems of young cabbages(Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.). The casual fungus was identified as Calletotrichum dernatium(Fr.) Grove based on morphological and cultural characteristics. Similar symptoms were observed on the cabbage when artificially inoculated on the plant leaves. The fungus was reisolated from the symptoms of the inoculated plant.

  • The results of examining the architectural features and changes of the main building of Dogapsa temple which is multi roofs wooden structure are as follows. The passage comparing 'Dogapsa' of <>, account of Lee Ha Gon's trip as the literature showing the appearance of Dogapsa temple in the early 18th century to Borimsa through verse of 'Dutacho' was noticeable. Dogapsa temple at Yeongam was distant over 100 ri from Borimsa temple at Jangheung and it was considered that there were many temples at Mt. Wolchul, Yeongam and there were also many temples to be comparable with it. But, Dogapsa temple was compared to Borimsa temple because verses 'many-storied building is high and immense' of 'Dogapsa' at <> and 'Dogapsa is lower than Borimsa at Jangheung' at 'Dutacho' of <> were interpreted as the existence of multi roofs Buddhist temple which had something in common with Dogapsa and Borimsa and was comparable to them. According to existing materials, it was assumed that the main building of Dogapsa was burnt through the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 52nd year of the sexagenary cycle (Eulmyooebyeon, 1555) and Jungyujaeran (1597), but record of major history of the main buildings of Dogapsa and Borimsa indicated that multi roofs wooden structure of the two temples were built at the same period. Since multi roofs wooden structure of main building of Borimsa was rebuilt in 1692, these buildings existed from the early 18th century to middle 18th century.

  • In this study, the proximate composition of Pyropia dentata was compared by the analysis of minerals and amino acids that were produced at Seocheon, Chungcheongnam-do and at Wando and Jangheung, Jeollanam-do. Moisture, ash and crude proteins were analyzed using the AOAC method, and crude lipid was analyzed using the Soxhlet method, and inorganic analysis was performed using ICP-OES. Amino acid was used for the amino acid analyzer. The proximate composition analysis, moisture content, maximum values were displayed in Wando while the maximum content of ash appeared at Jangheung's Pyropia. Crude proteins was appeared at Seocheon's Pyropia and the maximum amount of crude lipid, carbohydrate was appeared in Wando's Pyropia. Inorganic analysis, calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, zinc were analyzed from the Seocheon's Pyropia, however, cobalt, chromium, and nickel was not detected in Wando's Pyropia. For amino acid analysis, a total of 17 amino acids were detected: leucine, valine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and the amount of alanine accounted for about 57 % of total amino acids(26.1-28.7 %). The proximate composition, minerals, and amino acid of Pyropia dentata were different depending on the coastal ecological habitats.

  • Objectives: To examine the effect of long-term Korean medicine treatment on mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods: This study was conducted on two patients who were diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment and received long-term Korean medicine treatment. In order to evaluate the degree of cognitive decline, SNSB and K-MMSE were performed 2~3 times at the first visit and during the treatment process. Results: Both cases 1 and 2 were diagnosed with MCI with a high possibility of developing dementia. In case 1, MCI progressed to early dementia at one year after the diagnosis of MCI. However, in case 2, that MCI status was maintained without progressing to dementia for 4 years after the diagnosis of MCI. The cause of such difference in the course of MCI might be attributed to the fact that Case 1 had lower K-IADL level but higher SGDS level than Case 2 at the time of initial diagnosis, with weak family support and irregular herbal medicine intake. Conclusions: Korean medicine treatment could improve and manage symptoms of cognitive decline due to MCI.
