(M.A.F. 2001). • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of carbonized rice hull (CRH) application on soil carbon storage and $N_2O$ emissions from upland soil. It was used at different rates of 0, 5, 10 and $20Mg\;ha^{-1}$. During the Chinese cabbage cultivation, several soil chemical characteristics such as soil moisture, temperature and soil carbon were observed. Also, $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ emissions were monitored. Soil organic matter contents slightly increased with carbonized rice hull applied in all the treatments. The soil carbon contents with application rate of 0, 5, 10 and $20Mg\;ha^{-1}$ were 0, 1.3, 1.2 and $2.6g\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. It was observed that soil carbon content was higher with increasing CRH application rate. Total nitrogen contents of soil applied with CRH relatively decreased with the course of time. However, $NO_3$-N contents in the soil with CRH application rate of 5, 10 and $20Mg\;ha^{-1}$ were 28.6, 25.7 and $21.5mg\;kg^{-1}$ at the end of experiment, respectively. $CO_2$ emission at the $5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ application of CRH was higher about 18.9% than non-treatment, whereas those of $10Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and $20Mg\;ha^{-1}$ treatment were lower 14.4% and 11.8% compared to non-treatment, respectively. Also, it was shown that $N_2O$ emission reduced by 19.9, 28.3 and 54.0% when CRH was applied at 5, 10 and $5Mg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively.

  • A new red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivar, "Mihong" which has late bolting and deep red leaf color was developed from a cross of "Danhongongchukmyeon" (deep red but early bolting and low yield) and "Hajicheongchukmyeon" (late bolting and high yield). The selection and breeding of advanced lines were done by pedigree method during 2000-2006. The advanced lines were evaluated for yield and adaptability in Korea (Gangwon, Kyunggi, Chungbuk, Kyungnam, Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Jeju) from 2007 to 2008. The "Mihong" has gray seed color, traverse elliptic leaves and deep red color. Compared to "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon", marketable yield of "Mihong" was higher by 2% (at 291 g per plant) as a 17.3 ton/ha, but with particularly improved good expression of deep red leaf color in high temperature cultivation in the field. The shelf-life of "Mihong" was three weeks longer than "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon" at $4^{\circ}C$. The amount of anthocyanin content of "Mihong" were higher than with "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon" at 28.9 mg/100 g. Especially the degree of leaf hardness in "Mihong" showed $26.9kg/cm^2$ compared to "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon". therefore, its taste is better, more crispy, and sweeter than "Dukseomjeokchukmyeon" This new cultivar "Mihong" can be cultivated in all year around even if summer time cultivation.

  • Levels of ethyl carbamate, a potential carcinogen produced naturally during fermentation, in major Korean fermented foods and alcoholic beverages were determined by GC/MS/SIM, and their average daily intake and excess cancer risk in Korean people were estimated. In GC/MS/SIM analysis n.d.-4.26, 1.40-58.90, n.d.-3.76, n.d.-1.87, and 0.40-10.07 $\mu$g/kg of ethyl carbamate were detected in kimchi, soy sauces, fermented pastes, fermented dairy products, and alcoholic beverages, respectively. The average daily intake of ethyl carbamate and excess cancer risk through major Korean fermented foods and alcoholic beverage consumption were 6.0 ng/kg bw/day and $3.0\times10^{-7}$, respectively for the average Korean person aged 3-64 years, and were mainly contributed by Chinese cabbage kimchi, soy sauces, and Soju.

  • Methane emission was measured every two hours for a whole day at heading stage of rice plantsby using a closed static chamber installed in NPK(11-70-80 kg/ha) plot and NPK+rice straw(5 ton/ha) plots. The effect of air and soil temperature on methane emission was studied. In NPK plot the diel change of methane emission was synchronized better with soil temperature than air temperature because of abrupt rise of air temperature from 11 : 00 to 17 : 00 hours. In NPK+rice straw plot diel methane emission showed proportionally increased with increase of soil temperature except for times from 11 : 00~17 : 00 hours when air temperature was very high, but showed a closer relation with change of air temperature. It was suggested that the diel change of methane emission was closely related to that of air temperature where organic matter was abundant, while to that of soil temperature where organic matter was limited.
