  • Purpose: The aims of the present study are to determine the optimum compression rate in terms of file size reduction and diagnostic quality of the images after compression and evaluate the transmission speed of original or each compressed image. Materials and Methods: The material consisted of 24 extracted human premolars and molars. The occlusal surfaces and proximal surfaces of the teeth had a clinical disease spectrum that ranged from sound to varying degrees of fissure discoloration and cavitation. The images from Digora system were exported in TIFF and the images from conventional intraoral film were scanned and digitalized in TIFF by Nikon SF-200 scanner (Nikon, Japan). And six compression factors were chosen and applied on the basis of the results from a pilot study. The total number of images to be assessed were 336. Three radiologists assessed the occlusal and proximal surfaces of the teeth with 5-rank scale. Finally diagnosed as either sound or carious lesion by one expert oral pathologist. And sensitivity, specificity and k value for diagnostic agreement was calculated. Also the area (Az) values under the ROC curve were calculated and paired t-test and oneway ANOVA test was performed. Thereafter, transmission time of the image files of the each compression level was compared with that of the original image files. Results: No significant difference was found between original and the corresponding images up to 7% (1 : 14) compression ratio for both the occlusal and proximal caries (p<0.05). JPEG3 (1 : 14) image files are transmitted fast more than 10 times, maintained diagnostic information in image, compared with original image files. Conclusion: 1 : 14 compressed image file may be used instead of the original image and reduce storage needs and transmission time.

  • This paper proposes an efficient ROI code block discrimination algorithm for dynamic ROI coding. The proposed algorithm calculates the girth of the ROI only with some mask information in consideration of the characteristics of the shape of the ROI for reducing a ROI code block discrimination time, and this proposed algorithm discriminates whether there is a ROI code block by the girth and the critical value of the ROI. Also, this discrimination algorithm is capable of treating the coefficients of the background within a ROI code block preferentially and controlling a loss by controlling the threshold value of the ROI. In order to demonstrate the utility of the proposed method, this paper conducted a comparative experiment of the proposed method with the existing methods. As a result of this experiment, it was confirmed that the proposed method was superior to the conventional methods in terms of quality and speed.

  • As digital images combined with various types of information became popular, the development of transmission format standard for effective application of imageries is demanded. The purpose of the format standard is to provide a universal format that facilitates the exchange of images and related information. In this paper, we found optimal requirements of imagery transmission format standard after reviewing current state of both military and commercial products and studying functions of various types of format standards including NITF (National Imagery Transmission Format). In addition, future research direction of the imagery transmission format standard that complies with current trend of high-resolution and mass storage imagery data is proposed.

  • According as base of digital hologram has been magnified, discussion of compression technology is expected as a international standard which defines the compression technique of 3D image and video has been progressed in form of 3DAV which is a part of MPEG. As we can identify in case of 3DAV, the coding technique has high possibility to be formed into the hybrid type which is a merged, refined, or mixid with the various previous technique. Therefore, we wish to present the relationship between various image/video coding techniques and digital hologram In this paper, we propose an efficient coding method of digital hologram using standard compression tools for video and image. At first, we convert fringe patterns into video data using a principle of CGH(Computer Generated Hologram), and then encode it. In this research, we propose a compression algorithm is made up of various method such as pre-processing for transform, local segmentation with global information of object image, frequency transform for coding, scanning to make fringe to video stream, classification of coefficients, and hybrid video coding. Finally the proposed hybrid compression algorithm is all of these methods. The tool for still image coding is JPEG2000, and the toots for video coding include various international compression algorithm such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and H.264 and various lossless compression algorithm. The proposed algorithm illustrated that it have better properties for reconstruction than the previous researches on far greater compression rate above from four times to eight times as much. Therefore we expect that the proposed technique for digital hologram coding is to be a good preceding research.

  • Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT) is the oncoming generation of compression technique that has been selected for MPEG4 and JEPG2000, because it has no blocking effects and efficiently determines frequency property of temporary time. In this paper, we propose an efficient bit-serial architecture for the low-power and low-complexity DWT filter, employing two-channel QMF(Qudracture Mirror Filter) PR(Perfect Reconstruction) lattice filter. The filter consists of four lattices(filter length=8) and we determine the quantization bit for the coefficients by the fixed-length PSNR(peak-signal-to-noise ratio) analysis and propose the architecture of the bit-serial multiplier with the fixed coefficient. The CSD encoding for the coefficients is adopted to minimize the number of non-zero bits, thus reduces the hardware complexity. The proposed folded 1D DWT architecture processes the other resolution levels during idle periods by decimations and its efficient scheduling is proposed. The proposed architecture requires only flip-flops and full-adders. The proposed architecture has been designed and verified by VerilogHDL and synthesized by Synopsys Design Compiler with a Hynix 0.35$\mu$m STD cell library. The maximum operating frequency is 200MHz and the throughput is 175Mbps with 16 clock latencies.

  • In this paper, we proposed a hardware(H/W) structure which can compress and recontruct the input image in real time operation and implemented it into a FPGA platform using VHDL(VHSIC Hardware Description Language). All the image processing element to process both compression and reconstruction in a FPGA were considered each of them was mapped into H/W with the efficient structure for FPGA. We used the DWT(discrete wavelet transform) which transforms the data from spatial domain to the frequency domain, because use considered the motion JPEG2000 as the application. The implemented H/W is separated to both the data path part and the control part. The data path part consisted of the image processing blocks and the data processing blocks. The image processing blocks consisted of the DWT Kernel fur the filtering by DWT, Quantizer/Huffman Encoder, Inverse Adder/Buffer for adding the low frequency coefficient to the high frequency one in the inverse DWT operation, and Huffman Decoder. Also there existed the interface blocks for communicating with the external application environments and the timing blocks for buffering between the internal blocks The global operations of the designed H/W are the image compression and the reconstruction, and it is operated by the unit of a field synchronized with the A/D converter. The implemented H/W used the 69%(16980) LAB(Logic Array Block) and 9%(28352) ESB(Embedded System Block) in the APEX20KC EP20K600CB652-7 FPGA chip of ALTERA, and stably operated in the 70MHz clock frequency. So we verified the real time operation of 60 fields/sec(30 frames/sec).
