Yeast based estrogenicity assay is the simplest and useful for the assay and the discovery of novel estrogenic substances in natural specimens, The estrogen receptor(ER) modulation activity of 50% EtOH extracts of 101 traditional medicinal herbs was assessed using a recombinant yeast assay system with both a human estrogen receptor expression plasmid and a receptor plasmid. Among them, 14 species proved to be active. Pureariae Flos (flower of Puerraria thunbergiana BENTH.) had the highest estrogenic relative potency$(7.75{\times}10^{-3})$ $(EC_{50}=9.39\;{\mu}g/ml)$. The $EC_{50}$ value of $17{\beta}-estradiol$ used as the positive control was $0.073\;{\mu}g/ml)$ (Relative Potency=1.00). There results demonstrated that some of the traditional medical herb may be useful in the therapy of estrogen replacement.

Apple stem pitting virus (ASPV), of the Foveavirus genus in the family Betaflexiviridae, is one of the most common viruses of apple and pear trees. To examine variability of the coat protein (CP) gene from ASPV, eight isolates originating from 251 apple trees, which were collected from 22 apple orchards located in intensive apple growing areas of the North Gyeongsang and North Jeolla Provinces in Korea, were sequenced and compared. The nucleotide sequence identity of the CP gene of eight ASPV isolates ranged from 77.0 to 97.0%, while the amino acid sequence identity ranged from 87.7 to 98.5%. The N-terminal region of the viral CP gene was highly variable, whereas the C-terminal region was conserved. Genetic algorithm recombination detection (GARD) and single breakpoint recombination (SBP) analyses identified base substitutions between eight ASPV isolates at positions 54 and 57 and position 771, respectively. GABranch analysis was used to determine whether the eight isolates evolved due to positive selection. All values in the GABranch analysis showed a ratio of substitution rates at non-synonymous and synonymous sites (dNS/dS) below 1, suggestive of strong negative selection forces during ASPV CP history. Although negative selection dominated CP evolution in the eight ASPV isolates, SLAC and FEL tests identified four possible positive selection sites at codons 10, 22, 102, and 158. This is the first study of the ASPV genome in Korea.

Despite some practical confusion over the variations in the diagram which may be drawn differently depending upon the CASE, the statechart of UML has been widely used to show the dynamic behaviour of the systems. Prior research has employed either simple switch-case statement or the state design pattern to generate source code from the statechart, which may result in varying source codes. This paper made an attempt to formally define the statechart and generate source codes from it. Firstly we cleaned up the XMI which was generated from different CASEs. This XMI has been translated to the EHA to identify automata contained in it. Then the elements of the statechart metamodel were mapped to the java programs. We also verified the quality of source codes by measuring functionality and maintainability. The case employed in this study was the air conditioner. The reason was that the case includes various states and transitions of interest. It was found that XMI was well extracted by removing some legacy codes in the CASE and the source codes were then successfully generated with the concurrency and hierarchy of the statechart. Further research is required to validate it practical significance with a larger case.

As a de facto standard for system modeling, UML diagrams have been widely used in the industry. Of these, the class diagram is useful to visualize the classes and their relationships and thus directly influences the forward and reverse processes of system modeling and development. Many earlier studies have attempted to examine as to what impact the layout and complexity of the class diagram would have on the comprehension of system modeling. However, their findings have been equivocal and it is not easy to understand the effects of diagram layout. Accordingly this research relied on the guidelines of diagram layout suggested in the earlier studies and designed a 2 (layout) x 2 (complexity) factorial design to examine their impact on diagram comprehension. 47 subjects were participated in the experiment where class diagrams were provided differently in their layout and complexity. We found that a good layout was significantly more effective than the bad. Furthermore the results were significantly persistent in the complex group than the simple. However, there was no interaction effect between layout and complexity of the diagram.

This is the first report of c-Jun protein expression and mRNA in a pancreatic islet in a nonobese diabetic(NOD) state mice. In this experiment NOD mice with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus type I at age 16 weeks(n=7) just before death(n=4) were used. The control group consist of prediabetic NOD(8 weeks n=7) and ICR(8 weeks n=7 and 16 weeks n=7) mice. c-Jun positive cells in the pancreatic islet of NOD mice were localized in the same positions as a-glucagon producing cells. immunoreactivity was negative in the prediabetic NOD(8 weeks) and ICR(8 weeks and 16 weeks) mice. The number of c-Jun positive cells in mice with severe diabetic state just before death were significantly decreased when compared to NOD(16 weeks) mice. Expression of c-Jun in mRNA level was assessed by RT-PCR method. The levels of mRNA in NOD(16 weeks) mice group were elevated in total pancreatic tissues. The present results suggest that the induction of proto-oncogene protein may be of significance in assessing cell specific injury and may play a functional role between pancretic islet $\alpha$-cells and $\beta$-cells in the diabetic state.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether conjugated linoleic acid and selenium supplementation in broiler chicken diets would be effective, enhance indices of immune status and body weight, and modulate serum lipid concentration. Forty Hyline brown chickens, 1 weeks of age, were divided into 5 groups of 8 chickens. Chickens were fed the experimental diets supplemented with 1% CLA (conjugated linoleic acid; Group 1), 1% CLA + selenium (Group 2), 1% safflower-seed-oil as LA (Group 3), 1% safflower-seed-oil as LA + selenium (Group 4) or nothing (Control) for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, serum, liver, spleen and abdominal fat were taken. Measurement of total immunoglobulin were executed using sandwich ELISA. Weight ratio of liver to body showed that the group fed with CLA were significantly higher than the group fed with CLA + selenium. Weight ratios of spleen and fat to body showed no significantly differences. In concentrations of serum total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol, the group fed with CLA showed significantly higher values than that fed with CLA + selenium. In concentrations of serum triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol there were no significantly differences between the treatment groups. In conclusion, supplementation of CLA with selenium protected hepatomegaly and reduced level of serum total cholesterol and HDL-cholestererol in chickens.

Low temperature plasma diagnosis is one of the big issues in laboratory scale or processing industry. One of the most powerful techniques of plasma diagnostics is the use of the scattering of electromagnetic radiation from the plasma. Electron temperature and density are important parameters for understanding the information of plasmas in the plasma processing industry. Laser scattering experiments on plasma can provide a substantial amount of information about plasma parameters such as the electron density ne, the electron temperature Te, and the neutral density nn and temperature Tn. Thomson scattering spectroscopy is used several method, in accordance with detector type. Commonly, Thomson scattering is used several notch filter to separate expanded wavelength. Since using a spectrometer with surface relief grating or notch filter, the system of the measurement will be complicated and bigger. In this study, using VPHG (Volume Phase Holographic Grating) in order to install the simple and cheap system. VPHG has the advantage of the system installation, because it can be Transmission Type. The diffraction efficiency and dispersion angle of VPHG is higher than the surface relief grating relatively. For a wavelength and bandwidth selection, Using a slit or mask to select a rejection wavelength instead of notch filter.

Based on recent 27 document, reported in Huang Ti Nei Ching, the following results concering the tongue and Tongue-acupuncture were obtained: 1. It was observed that the tongue has direct or indirect connection with the Heart meridian, the Liver meridian, the Spleen meridian, the Kidney meridian, the Triple energizer meridian and the Stomach meridian. 2. The Tongue-acupunccture, needlingon tongue, is one of new acupunctures treating general disorder and 31 acu-points have been found; 17 points on the upper part and 14 points on the lower part of the tongue. 3. The Tongue-acupuncture is employed by dividing the tongue into threeregions; Sangcho area(下焦穴), Jungcho area(中焦穴) and Hacho area(下焦穴). Each region cures its own corresponding symptoms. 4. The upper part of the tongue is divided into 4 regions by the sidelines along with Chuy Cheon(聚泉), So Jang Hyul(小腸穴) and Dae Jang Hyul(大腸穴). Objective : Ossification of ligaments within spinal canal, i.e., OPLL and OLF, is uncommon clinical entity as a cause of the progressive compression myelopathy or radiculopathy. More and more cases being reported in the field of occidental medicine, but very few cases have been reported in the field of oriental medicine. The purpose of this study is to report on oriental medical approaches to OPLL and OLF. Methods : Subjects of this study are 3 cases of OPLL and 3 cases of OLF who visited Won-kwang oriental medical hospital(Dept. of acupuncture and Moxibustion) from May, 2002 to October, 2003. These patients undergo oriental medical treatment such as acupuncture, cupping, Bee-Venom therapy and herbal medication and so on. We made a comparison JOA scores between before treatment and after treatment and we evaluated results of treatment. Results : The results of treatment in these six cases are as follows ; One case was evaluated 'Excellent', one case was evaluated 'Good', two cases were evaluated 'Fair' and two cases were evaluated 'Failure'. One of these cases had a surgical operation after discharge from this hospital. Conclusions : After oriental medical care for these cases, there are some improvements such as decrease of pains, relief of myelopathy etc. But, it had little effect on some cases, therefore we considered that more special study to find various and effective methods of oriental medical treatment for these diseases should be made.

The method using Rankine Soure distribution over the hull surface and undisturbed free surface was applied to calculate the free surface flow around a ship. The ship hull as well as a local portion of the undisturbed free surface arc geometrically represented by quadrilateral panels and the source density is determined so as to satisfy the linearized free surface condition based on the double model flow. The pressure distribution, wave resistance, wave profile and hydrodynamic sinkage force and trim moment for the Wigley hull and the Series 60 hull with $C_B=0.60$ were calculated in the fixed condition. The calculated results were compared with the measured values. The dependance of the solution on the panel arrangement, particularly on the free suraface, was also studied through 11 numerical test cases for the Wigley hull.
