  • The discrete structure of substituted 9-benzonorbornenyl cation 3a and 3c was studied using the empirical ${\Delta}$J equation which was developed by Kelly and coworker$^5$. The ${\Delta}$J values of substituted 9-benzonorbornenyl cations were obtained from p-methyl-6,7-dimethyl benzonorbornen-9-yl (3a) and 9-methyl-6,7-dimethyl benzonorbonen-9-yl (3c) cations under stable ion conditions, and were compared with those of the corresponding ketone analog; these cations were generated by dissolving the corresponding carbinols in superacid at -120$^{\circ}$C and the nmr spectra taken at -60$^{\circ}$C~-90$^{\circ}$C. The ${\Delta}$J values are 8.7 Hz for the bridgehead carbons in cation 3c and 3.1 Hz for cation 3b. The ${\Delta}$J values at C5,8 in fused benzene ring are 14.3 Hz for cation 3c and 8.7 Hz for cation 3a. The excellent correlation of the ${\Delta}$J values with 1$^9F$ chemical shifts of p-fluorophenyl-6,7-dimethylbenzonorbornenyl cation (3d) indicate that ${\Delta}$J value is a reliable probe to charge density at adjacent cationic carbon. These NMR parameters strongly support that the symmetrically ${\pi}$-bridged nonclassical structure (type 2) of substituted 9-benzonorbornenyl cations in stable ion conditions.

  • Let X$_1$, X$_2$, … be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables with continuous cumulative distribution function F(x). X(sub)j is an upper record value of this sequence if X(sub)j > max {X$_1$, X$_2$, …, X(sub)j-1}. We define u(n) = min {j│j > u(n-1), X(sub)j > X(sub)u(n-1), n $\geq$ 2} with u(1) = 1. Then F(x) = 1 - e(sup)-x/c, x > 0 if and only if E[X(sub)n(n+1) - X(sub)u(n)│X(sub)u(m) = y] = c or E[X(sub)u(n+2) - X(sub)u(n)│X(sub)u(m) = y] = 2c, n $\geq$ m+1.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to compare the effects of Hominis placenta (Jahage, J) and wild ginseng (SanSam, S) pharmacopuncture drugs on muscle differentiation and energy metabolism regulation in C2C12 myotubes. Methods: The C2C12 myoblasts were differentiated into myotubes for 5 days by replacing in medium containing 2% horse serum and then treated with J and S pharmacopuncture extract at different concentrations for 24 hr. The expression of myosin heavy chain and energy metabolism-regulating factors, myosin heavy chain (MHC), nuclear respiratory factor-1 (NRF-1), and proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1α) were determined in C2C12 myotubes by western blot. Additionally, the phosphorylation of AMPK and the expression of mitochondrial biogenesis, including sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) were determined in the myotubes. Results: As a result, treatment with J and S pharmacopuncture extract at 0.1 and 1 mg/mL increased the MHC expression in C2C12 myotubes compared with non-treated cells, but only S pharmacopuncture was shown a significant and distinct increase in the expression. Expression of TFAM and NRF-1 was also shown significant increases in S and J pharmacopuncture in C2C12 myotubes compared to non-treated cells. The phosphorylation of AMPK and the expression of PGC-1α and SIRT1 showed increased expression in S and J pharmacopuncture compared to non-treated cells. The effect of low-dose of J pharmacopuncture on the phosphorylated adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and PGC-1α expression was greater than that of S pharmacopuncture. Conclusions: In conclusion, both J and S pharmacopuncture promote muscle differentiation in C2C12 myoblasts into myotubes and energy metabolism through the AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway. This indicates that the pharmacopuncture with tonic herbal medicines can help to improve skeletal muscle function.

  • A.c. susceptibility for $Bi_{1.4}Pb_{0.6}Sr_2Ca_2Cu_{3.6}O_x$ superconductor is measured as a function of temperature at different value of a.c. magnetic field amplitude. Two transition steps are attributed to the intergranular and intragranular properties. Based on Bean's critical state model, intergranular critical current density, $J_c^{gb}$ (11 $A/cm^2$ at 77 K) and intragranular critical current density, $J_c^g (7{\times}10^3\;A/cm^2$ at 100 K) are estimated. The low values of $J_c^{gb}$and $J_c^g$ reflect a poor nature of coupling between grains and the low pinning force density of intragrain in $Bi_{1.4}Pb_{0.6}Sr_2Ca_2Cu_{3.6}O_x$ superconductor.

  • A greenhouse soil infested with an obligate nematode parasitic bacterium, Pasteuria penetrans, was used to test the effect of temperatures on the endospore attachment to root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne arenaria, juveniles (J2). Freshly hatched J2s were inoculated to the soil in petri dish and incubated under different temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, and $35^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. The endospore attachment rates were 100% in all the temperatures, while the number of endospores attached per J2 was highest in $25^{\circ}C$ with 28.3 endospores/J2 followed by 20.2, 18.6, and 13.6 in $30^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. When the soil was pre-treated under different temperatures before the J2 inoculation, the endospore attachment rates significantly decreased from 60% in room temperature to $25^{\circ}C$, 31.7, 8.3, 5.0, and 0% after the soil incubation in $-30^{\circ}C$, $4^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, and $100^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, respectively. The endospore numbers attached per J2 were 3.5, 4.3, 1, 1, and 0 when the soil was pre-treated in $-30^{\circ}C$, $4^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, and $100^{\circ}C$, respectively, which were lower than 5.3/J2 of room temperature treated soil. The P. penetrans isolate in the soil showed nematode species-specific endospore attachment characteristics with 100% attachment rate only on M. arenaria J2s while the rates were 0% on M. hapla and M. incognita J2s.

  • The aim of this research paper is to evaluate fifty double integrals invoving generalized hypergeometric function (25 each) in the form of $${{\int}^1_0}{{\int}^1_0}\;x^{{\gamma}-1}y^{{\gamma}+c-1}(1-x)^{c-1}(1-y)^{c+{\ell}}(1-xy)^{{\delta}-2c-{\ell}-1}{\times}_3F_2\[{^{a,\;b,\;2c+{\ell}+1}_{\frac{1}{2}(a+b+i+1),\;2c+j}}\;;{\frac{(1-x)y}{1-xy}}\]dxdy$$ and $${{\int}^1_0}{{\int}^1_0}\;x^{{\gamma}-1}y^{{\gamma}+c+{\ell}}(1-x)^{c+{\ell}}(1-y)^{c-1}(1-xy)^{{\delta}-2c-{\ell}-1}{\times}_3F_2\[{^{a,\;b,\;2c+{\ell}+1}_{\frac{1}{2}(a+b+i+1),\;2c+j}}\;;{\frac{1-y}{1-xy}}\]dxdy$$ in the most general form for any ${\ell}{\in}{\mathbb{Z}}$ and i, j = 0, ${\pm}1$, ${\pm}2$. The results are derived with the help of generalization of Edwards's well known double integral due to Kim, et al. and generalized classical Watson's summation theorem obtained earlier by Lavoie, et al. More than one hundred ineteresting special cases have also been obtained.

  • This study examined the effect of the heat treatment and alloying elements (B, Ti) on the microstructures and mechanical properties of API J55 steel. The experiments were carried out using various austenization temperatures ($880^{\circ}C$, $910^{\circ}C$, $940^{\circ}C$), cooling methods (water quenching, oil quenching) and tempering temperatures (none, $550^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$) with J55 and J55+B,Ti steels. The phase diagram and CCT curve were simulated based on the chemical compositions of the J55 and J55+B,Ti steels to predict the microstructures. The results showed that the A1 and A3 temperatures decreased and, as a result, the noses of the ferrite and bainite parts of the CCT curve moved to the right. Various microstructures were formed, namely martensite, bainite, ferrite and pearlite, in accordance with the heat treatment, which had an effect on the hardness, tensile strength and toughness. Martensite was formed after water quenching, but bainite and ferrite appeared after oil quenching with the J55 specimens. On the other hand, martensite was formed, regardless of the cooling method (water quenching, oil quenching), with the J55+B,Ti specimens, because of the improvement of the hardenability caused by the addition of boron. Therefore, the J55+B,Ti specimens exhibited much higher mechanical properties than the J55 specimens, even after the tempering treatment, since the addition of Ti caused fine precipitates to be formed, which inhibited grain growth at the recrystallization temperature.
