  • In two dimensional incompressible flows, a preconditioning technique called Hierarchical Iterative Procedure(HIP) has been implemented on a stabilized finite element formulation. The stabilization has been peformed by a modified residual method proposed by Illinca et. al.[3]. The stabilization which is necessary to escape from the LBB constraint renders an equal order formulation. In this paper, we increased the order of interpolation whithin an element up to cubic. The conjugate gradient squared(CGS) method is used for the outer iteration, and the HIP for the preconditioning for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. The hierarchical elements has been used to achieve a higher order accuracy in fluid flow analyses, but a proper efficient iterative procedure for higher order finite element formulation has not been available so far. The numerical results by the present HIP for the lid driven cavity flow showed the present procedure to be stable, very efficient and useful in flow analyses in conjunction with hierarchical elements.

  • Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with belief-propagation (BP) algorithm achieve a remarkable performance close to the Shannon limit at reasonable decoding complexity. Conventionally, each iteration in decoding process contains two steps, the horizontal step and the vertical step. In this paper, an efficient implementation of the adaptive offset min-sum (AOMS) algorithm for decoding LDPC codes using the single-step method is proposed. Furthermore, the performances of the AOMS algorithm compared with belief-propagation (BP) algorithm are investigated. The algorithms using the single-step method reduce the implementation complexity, speed up the decoding process and have better efficiency in terms of memory requirements.

  • This paper investigates the natural modes and static reponses of modularized floating structure. As an example structure, a floating parking place$(120m{\times}60m)$ is considered. In the evaluation of natural modes and static responses, numerical equations are formulated by FEM(Finite Element Method) and the natural modes are solved by subspace iteration method. By comparing responses of structures of various sizes of module unit, the effect of unit size is also investigated.

  • The IPSAP which is a finite element analysis program has been developed for high parallel performance computing. This program consists of various analysis modules - stress, vibration and thermal analysis module, etc. The M orthogonal block Lanczos algorithm with shiftinvert transformation is used for solving eigenvalue problems in the vibration module. And the multifrontal algorithm which is one of the most efficient direct linear equation solvers is applied to factorization and triangular system solving phases in this block Lanczos iteration routine. In this study, the performance enhancement procedures of the IPSAP are composed of the following stages: 1) communication volume minimization of the factorization phase by modifying parallel matrix subroutines. 2) idling time minimization in triangular system solving phase by partial inverse of the frontal matrix and the LCM (least common multiple) concept.

  • This study proposes a system identification technique for a fiber-reinforced polymer deck with neural networks. Neural networks are trained for system identification and the identified structure gives training data in return. This process is repeated until the identified parameters converge. Hence, the proposed algorithm is called an iterative neural network scheme. The proposed algorithm also relies on recent developments in the experimental design of the response surface method. The proposed strategy is verified with known systems and applied to a fiber-reinforced polymer bridge deck with experimental data.

Large post-buckling behavior of Timoshenko beams under axial compression loads

  • Large post-buckling behavior of Timoshenko beams subjected to non-follower axial compression loads are studied in this paper by using the total Lagrangian Timoshenko beam element approximation. Two types of support conditions for the beams are considered. In the case of beams subjected to compression loads, load rise causes compressible forces end therefore buckling and post-buckling phenomena occurs. It is known that post-buckling problems are geometrically nonlinear problems. The considered highly non-linear problem is solved considering full geometric non-linearity by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. There is no restriction on the magnitudes of deflections and rotations in contradistinction to von-Karman strain displacement relations of the beam. The beams considered in numerical examples are made of lower-Carbon Steel. In the study, the relationships between deflections, rotational angles, critical buckling loads, post-buckling configuration, Cauchy stress of the beams and load rising are illustrated in detail in post-buckling case.

  • 학부생들이 쉽게 사용할 수 있는 기법인 반복 그린함수 방법(IGFM)을 이용하여 복잡한 전자파 도파관 구조를 이론적으로 해석한다. IGFM은 그린함수와 반복법을 이용한다. IGFM의 간단한 공식화를 위해 단순한 수학 방정식만을 사용한 물리적인 메커니즘을 이용한다. 전형적인 전자파 도파관 구조인 평행판 E평면 T접합에 대한 산란 특성을 IGFM 관점에서 이론적으로 공식화한다. 수치해석 결과를 주파수에 대한 반사와 투과 전력 관점에서 보인다. 우세모드 해를 유도하고 그 결과를 고차모드에 의한 해와 비교한다.

  • The enhancement of system security is one of the most important objectives of UPFC operation. To describe the system security, the index related to line flows and bus voltages are used. For the enhancement of security, the operation point of UPFC is set to minimize the index. This paper proposes the minimization algorithm using the Marquardt method. Moreover, the coefficients minimizing iteration number will be derived. For verification of the proposed operation scheme, numerical simulations have been performed on power system in Kwanju area, Korea with a UPFC.

Stochastic space vibration analysis of a train-bridge coupling system

  • The Pseudo-Excitation Method (PEM) is applied to study the stochastic space vibration responses of train-bridge coupling system. Each vehicle is modeled as a four-wheel mass-spring-damper system with two layers of suspension system possessing 15 degrees-of- freedom. The bridge is modeled as a spatial beam element, and the track irregularity is assumed to be a uniform random process. The motion equations of the vehicle system are established based on the d'Alembertian principle, and the motion equations of the bridge system are established based on the Hamilton variational principle. Separate iteration is applied in the solution of equations. Comparisons with the Monte Carlo simulations show the effectiveness and satisfactory accuracy of the proposed method. The PSD of the 3-span simply-supported girder bridge responses, vehicle responses and wheel/rail forces are obtained. Based on the $3{\sigma}$ rule for Gaussian stochastic processes, the maximum responses of the coupling system are suggested.

  • This paper proposes an analytic tool for long-term generation expansion planning based on the maximum principle. Many research works have been performed in the field of generation expansion planning. But few works can be found with the maxinmum principle. A recently published one worked by professor Young Moon Park et al. shows remarkable improvements in modeling and computation. But this modeling allows only thermal units. This paper has extended Professor Park's model so that the optimal pumped-storage operation is taken into account. So the ability for practical application is enhanced. In addition, the analytic supply-shortage cost function is included. The maximum principle is solved by gradient search due to its simplicity. Every iteration is treated as if mathematical programming such that all controls from the initial to the terminal time are manipulated within the same plane. Proposed methodology is tested in a real scale power system and the simulation results are compared with other available package. Capability of proposed method is fully demonstrated. It is expected that the proposed method can be served as a powerful analytic tool for long-term generation expansion planning.
