Indoor and outdoor pullout tests for retrofit anchors in low strength concrete

  • In this study, pullout capacities of post-installed deformed bars anchored in low strength concrete using different bonding materials are investigated experimentally. The experimental study was conducted under outdoor and indoor conditions; on the beams of an actual reinforced concrete building and on concrete bases constructed at Istanbul Technical University (ITU). Ready-mixed cement based anchorage mortar with modified polymers (M1), ordinary cement with modified polymer admixture (M2), and epoxy based anchorage mortar with two components (E) were used as bonding material. Furthermore, test results are compared with the predictions of current analytical models. Findings of the study showed that properly designed cement based mortars can be efficiently used for anchoring deformed bars in low quality concrete. It is important to note that the cost of cement based mortar is much lower with respect to conventional epoxy based anchorage materials.

A comparative study on the subspace based system identification techniques applied on civil engineering structures

  • The Subspace based System Identification Techniques (SSIT) have been very popular within the research circles in the last decade due to their proven superiority over the other existing system identification techniques. For operational (output only) modal analysis, the stochastic SSIT and for operational modal analysis in the presence of exogenous inputs, the combined deterministic stochastic SSIT have been used in the literature. This study compares the application of the two alternative techniques on a typical school building in Istanbul using 100 Monte Carlo simulations. The study clearly shows that the combined deterministic stochastic SSIT performs superior to the stochastic SSIT when the techniques are applied on noisy data from low to mid rise stiff structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to calculate the torsional rigidity of arbitrarily shaped composite sections on the basis of hybrid finite element approach. An analogy is used between the torsion problem and deformation of a plate which exhibits only shear behavior. In the analysis a simple hybrid finite element based on Hellinger-Reissner functional is presented and a set of numerical examples are performed to demonstrate and asses the performance of the developed element in practical applications.

  • Ganglioneuromas are benign tumors. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice with very good prognosis. However, neuroblastomatous malignant transformation of ganglioneuromas was previously reported. We report a patient with spinal neuroblastoma recurrent from a ganglioneuroblastoma after disease free survival of 13 years. This is one of the rare examples of spinal neuroblastoma and to our knowledge the second case report with malignant transformation from a ganglioneuroblastoma or a ganglioneuroma. The present case is the only report in the literature with further genetic investigations.

  • This study will covered socio-cultural background and characteristic of the face-concealing culture of Istanbul which has liberal and westernized clothes culture for women even if it's an city in an Islamic country. This study depended on literatures related to religion, culture and costumes of the Ottoman Empire, especially costumic data on miniature of turkey, which was famous from 16th to 19th century. Since the 17th century, the Ottoman Empire has been gradually influenced by European countries but the change of women's clothes was not considerable. In the 18th century, women's clothes were influenced by foreign fashions. A veil to cover the face was gradually disappeared and traditional Turkish headdresses were replaced by European hats. Through face-concealing culture of Istanbul, we can see some socio-cultural features like Islamic religious character, one's social position, economic situation, westernization and renovation, beauty and completion of costume, duality for the reason of regional difference.

  • One of the objectives of this study is to implement the direct calculation of the torsional moment of inertia for non-circular cross-sections, which is based on the St. Venant torsion formulation and the finite element method. Recently the proposed method provides a unique calculation of the torsional rigidity of simply and multiply connected cross-sections. Next, free vibration analyses of cylindrical and non-cylindrical helices with non-circular cross-sections are solved by a curved two-nodded mixed finite element based on the Timoshenko beam theory. Some thin-thick closed or open sections are handled and the natural frequencies of cylindrical and non-cylindrical helices are compared with the literature and the commercial finite element program SAP2000.

  • (사)한국포장협회(회장 임경호)가 '2021 터키 이스탄불 포장전시회(Eurasia Packaging Istanbul)'에 참가해 한국관을 운영했다. 10월 20일부터 23일까지 터키 이스탄불 Tuyap Istanbul Fair Convention and Congress Center에서 열린 이번 전시회에는 포장제품, 포장재료, 포장산업을 위한 서비스, 포장디자인서비스, 종이 및 판지 포장 관련 제품 및 기술, 컨버팅기술, 포장기계 및 장비, 포장 재활용기술, 물류서비스 등이 소개됐다. 한국포장협회는 7개사, 7개 부스 규모로 한국관을 마련해 우리나라의 우수한 포장 기술 및 포장재를 유럽시장에 선보였다. 이번 전시회의 한국관 구성에 참여한 (주)서일의 김시범 과장이 '2021 터키 이스탄불 포장전시회(Eurasia Packaging Istanbul)'의 참관기를 작성해주었다. 참관기를 통해 생생한 현장의 소리를 전할 수 있는 기회를 김 과장에게 지면을 빌어 감사의 인사를 전한다.

Evaluation of the morphology of the canalis sinuosus using cone-beam computed tomography in patients with maxillary impacted canines

  • Purpose: The nasopalatine canal is a well-known, important anatomical structure in the anterior maxilla, but this region contains many accessory canals. The canalis sinuosus (CS) is one of these canals; it contains the anterior superior alveolar nerve, along with veins and arteries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the CS using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in patients with maxillary impacted canines. Materials and Methods: A total of 111 patients admitted to the Istanbul Medipol University School of Dentistry for the exposure, orthodontic treatment, and/or extraction of an impacted canine were included in this study. CBCT images were obtained for these patients under standard conditions. Axial, coronal, and sagittal sections were evaluated to assess the prevalence of CS, the direction and diameter of the canal, its relation with the impacted canine, and its distance from the alveolar crest. Further, possible correlations with patient gender and age were analyzed. Results: The CS could be detected bilaterally in all the evaluated tomography images. The mean canal diameter was significantly larger in males than in females(P=.001). The CS ran significantly closer to the impacted canine when the canal was located horizontally (P=.03). Variations of the canal, such as accessory canals, were identified in 6 patients. Conclusion: CS is an anatomical entity that may resemble periapical lesions and other anatomical structures. Evaluation with CBCT prior to surgical procedures in the anterior maxilla will help to prevent overlooking such anatomical structures and to decrease possible surgical complications.
