  • The predictive utility of a damage model depends heavily on its particular choice of a damage variable, which serves as a macroscopic approximation in describing the underlying micromechanical processes of microdefects. In the case of spatially perfectly randomly distributed microcracks or microvoids in all directions, isotropic damage model is an appropriate choice, and scalar damage variables were widely used for isotropic or one-dimensional phenomenological damage models. The simplicity of a scalar damage representation is indeed very attractive. However, a scalar damage model is of somewhat limited use in practice. In order to entirely characterize the isotropic damage behaviors of damaged materials in multidimensional space, a system theory of isotropic double scalar damage variables, including the expressions of specific damage energy release rate, the coupled constitutive equations corresponding to damage, the conditions of admissibility for two scalar damage effective tensors within the framework of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, was provided and analyzed in this study. Compared with the former studies, the theoretical formulations of double scalar damage variables in this study are given in the form of matrix, which has many features such as simpleness, directness, convenience and programmable characteristics. It is worth mentioning that the above-mentioned theoretical formulations are only logically reasonable. Owing to the limitations of time, conditions, funds, etc. they should be subject to multifaceted experiments before their innovative significance can be fully verified. The current level of research can be regarded as an exploratory attempt in this field.

  • In this paper a new constitutive model for ductile materials was proposed. This model can describe the material degradation due to the evolution of isotropic damage during elasto-platic deformation. The plastic flow rule was derived under the framework of thermodynamic approach of continuum damage mechanics(CDM) in which plastic strain hardening parameters and isotropic damage were taken as thermodynamic state variables. And the process to determine material constants for constitutive model using an experimental data was presented.

  • this paper was concentrated on the finite element formulation to solve boundary value problems by using the isotropic elasto-plastic damage constitutive model proposed previously(Noh, 2000) The plastic damage of ductile materials is generally accompanied by large plasticdeformation and strain. So nonlinearity problems induced by large deformation large rotation and large strain behaviors were dealt with using the nonlinear kinematics of elasto-plastic deformations based on the continuum mechanics. The elasto-plastic damage constitutive model was applied to the nonlinear finite element formulation process of Shin et al(1997) and an improved analysis model considering the all nonlinearities of structural behaviors is proposed. Finally to investigate the applicability and validity of the numerical model some numerial examples were considered.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate problems of residual bending strength and the impact damage experimentally when CFRP composite laminates are subjected to Foreign object damage. The specimens composed of four types of CR/EPOXY and a CF/PEEK composite laminates which involved difference of fiber stracking orientation and matrics. The result were summariged as follows : 1) It is found that both orthotropic and guasi-isotropic composite laminates are increasimg lineally between impact energy and damage delamination area. 2) Delamination devel- opment energy(mm$^{2}$J) OF cf/epoxy composite aminates is less than that of CF/PEEK. 3) When impact energy is applied to specimens within 3J, the residual strength of orthotropic is greater than guasi-isotropic composite laminates. On the other hand, it is predicted that residual bending strength of orthotropic composite laminates is less than that of quasi-isotropic when impact energy is more thaen 3J. 4) It is found in CF/PEEK that for the impact side compression, residual of bending strength versus impact energy is almost constant, while in case of impact side tension, residual bending strength is decreased rapidly near 1.2J. of impact energy due to the effect of delamination buckling.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate fatigue damage of quasi-isotropic laminates under tensile loading in different directions. Low cycle fatigue tests of [0/-60/+60]a laminates and [+30/-30/90]s lamina tes were carried out. Material systems used are AS4/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK. The fatigue damage of [+30/-30/90]s is very different from that of [0/-60/+60]s. The position of delamination generated at AS4/Epoxy and AS$/PEEK laminates were differentiated by the matrix difference that is, we suppose, the value of both GIcr(critical energy release rate of mode-I) and GIIIcr(critical energy release rate of mode-III) difference.

Low cycle fatigue tests of $[0/-60/60]_s$ laminates and $[30/-30/90]_s$ laminates were carried out. Material systems used are AS4/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK. The fatigue damage of $[30/-30/90]_s$ is very different from that of $[0/-60/60]_s$. The experimental results are compared with the result obtained from the method for determining strain energy release rate components proposed by the authors. The analytical results were in good agreement with the experimental results. It is proved that the failure criterion based on the strain energy release rate is an appropriate approach to predict the initiation and growth of delaminations under cyclic loading.

  • This paper presents a methodology to detect and locate damages and faults in orthotropic plate structures. A specific damage index based on dynamic mode shapes of the damaged and undamaged structures has been introduced. The governing differential equation on transverse deformation, the transverse shear force equations and the invariant expression for the sum of transverse loading of an orthotropic plate are employed to obtain the aforementioned damage indices. The validity of the proposed methodology for isotropic and orthotropic damage states is demonstrated using a numerical example. It is shown that the algorithm is able to detect damages for both isotropic and orthotropic damage states acceptably.

  • Low velocity impact test and compressive residual strength test after impact were performed by using Hercules AS4/3501-6[45/0/-45/90]$_{2s}$ laminated plate to investigate the low velocity impact damage behavior and the post-impact strength degradation on orthotropic composite laminate plate. Due to the lateral impact losd, the load path showed "" shape according to the laminate central deflection. Damage in a laminate occurs by inclined matrix crack at the damage initiation load stage and vertical matrix crack, occurs on the outer surface. Evaluating the compressive residual strength after the low velocty impact test, it could be found that there is a transient range where the compressive residual strength drop suddenly in the initial damage which is in the matrix crack range and the initial delamination area. is in the matrix crack range and the initial delamination area.

  • Electrical resistance change measurements were performed, to detect fatigue damage of a quasi-isotropic CFRP and cross-ply CFRP laminates. A four-probe method was used to measure the exact electrical resistance change. A three-probe method was used to measure the electrical contact resistance change, during long cyclic loading. The specimen side surface was observed using a video-microscope to detect damage. The measured electrical resistance changes were compared with the observed damage. The results of this study show that the electrical resistance increase of the quasi-isotropic laminate was caused by a delamination crack between ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ plies. Matrix cracking caused a small electrical resistance increase of the cross-ply laminate, but the decreased electrical resistance caused by the shear-plastic deformation impedes matrix-cracking detection.
