Free transverse vibration of shear deformable super-elliptical plates with uniform thickness was studied based on Mindlin plate theory using finite element method. Quadrilateral isoparametric elements were used in the paper. Sensitivity analysis was made to determine the influence of the thickness, the aspect ratio, and the shape of the plate on the natural frequency. Accuracy of the results computed in the current study was validated by comparing them with the solutions available in the literature. The results reveal that the frequencies of clamped super-elliptical plates lie in the range bounded by elliptical and rectangular plates irrespective of the aspect ratio, and furthermore, the frequency decreases if the super-elliptical power increases. A similar trend was observed for simply supported plates with high aspect ratio. The free vibration response for the first and the second symmetric-antisymmetric (SA) modes were found to be different for high aspect ratio. The results reveal that using insufficient number of degrees of freedom results in finding a totally different relation between the super-elliptical power and the frequency.

The main intention of this paper is to develop and compare the algorithm based on finite element procedures for nonlinear transient dynamic analysis which has combined effects of material and geometric nonlinearities. Incremental equilibrium equations based on the principle of virtual work are derived by the finite element approach. For the elasto - plastic large deformation analysis of shells and the determination of the displacement-time configuration under time-varying loads, the explicit, implicit and combined explicit-implicit time integration algorithm is adopted. In the time structure is selected and the results are compared with each others. Isoparametric 8-noded quadrilateral curved elements are used for shell structure in the analysis and for geometrically nonlinear elastic behaviour, a total Lagrangian coordinate system was adopted. On the other hands, material nonlinearity is based on elasto-plastic models with Von-Mises yield criteria. Thus, the combined explicit-implicit time integration algorithm is benefit in general case of shell structure, which is the result of this paper.

In adaptive finite element analysis, r- and h-methods are generally used on the basis of a discretization error estimator. In this paper, an rh-method is proposed as a new adaptive method which can improve the adaptivity performance by using both of them. This suggested rh-method moves nodal coordinates of initially given model to adjust element discretization errors and thereafter performes the h-method tdo obtain the specified accuracy of finite element solutions. Numerical experiments for various plane problems were performed using 4-noded isoparametric quadrilateral elements. As a result, the rh-method has been shown to be an accurate and efficient adaptive analysis method to obtain as improved solution.
A finite element formulation based on the CFT(Compression Field Theory), considering the effect of compression softening in cracked concrete, and macro-scopic and rotating crack models etc., was presented for the nonlinear behaviour of structural concrete. Considering the computational efficency and the ability of modelling the post-ultimate behaviour as major concerns, the Incremental displacement solution algorithm involving initial material stiffnesses and the relaxation procedure for fast convergence was adopted and formulated in a type of 8-noded quadrilateral isoparametric elements. The analysis program NASCOM(Non1inear Analysis of Structural Concrete by FEM : Monotonic Loading) developed in this way enables the predictions of strength and deformation capacities in a full range, crack patterns and their corresponding widths, and yield extents of reinforcement. As the verification purpose of NASCOM, the predictions were made for Bhide's Panel(PB21) and Leonhardt's deep beam tests. The predicted results shows somewhat stiff behaviour for the panel test, and vice versa for deep beam tests. More refining process would be necessary hereafter in terms of more accurately simulating the effects of tension-stiffening and compression softening in concrete.

Uncoupled, quasi-static and linear thermoviscoelastic problems are analyzed in time domain by the finite element approximation which is developed using the principle of virtual work and viscoelasticity matrices instead of shear and bulk relaxation functions as in usual formulations. The material is assumed to be isotropic, homegeneous and thermorheologically simple, which means that the temperature-time equivalence postulate is effective. The stress-strain laws are expressed by relaxation-type hereditary integrals. In spatial and time discritizations, isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral finite elements and linear time variations are adopted. For explicit derivations, the viscoelastic material is assumed to behave standard linear solid in shear and elastically in dilatation. Two-dimensional examples are solved under general temperature distributions T = T(x, t), and compared with other opproximate solutions to show the versatility of the presented analysis.

The present article focuses on the thermoelastic deformation behavior of inhomogeneous functionally graded metal/ceramic cylindrical shell structure with multiple perforations using 2D finite element approximation. Here, cylindrical shell structure is considered with single (1×1) and multiple (2×2, 3×3 and 4×4) perforations. The temperature-dependent elastic and thermal properties of functionally graded material are evaluated using Voigt's micromechanical material scheme via power-law function. The kinematics of the proposed model is based on the equivalent single-layer first-order shear deformation mid-plane theory with five degrees-of-freedom. Here, 2D isoparametric finite element solutions are obtained using eight-node quadrilateral elements. The mesh refinement of present finite element model is performed to confirm the appropriate number of elements and nodes for the analysis purpose. Subsequently, a comparison test is conducted to demonstrate the accuracy of present results. In later section, numerous numerical illustrations are demonstrated at different set of conditions by varying structural, material and loading parameters and that confirms the significance of various parameters such as power-law index, aspect ratio, thickness ratio, curvature ratio, number of perforations and temperature on the deformation characteristics of functionally graded cylindrical shell structure.
A finite element formulation based on the CFT(Compression Field Theory) concept such as the effect of compression softening in cracked concrete, and macroscopic and rotating crack models etc. was presented for the nonlinear behaviour of structural concrete. In this category, tangential or secant material stiffnesses for cracked concrete were also defined and discussed in view of the iterative solution schemes for nonlinear equations. Considering the computational efficiency and the ability of modelling the post-ultimate behaviour as major concerns, the incremental displacement solution algorithm involving initial material stiffnesses and the relaxation procedure for fast convergence was adopted and formulated in a type of 8-noded quadrilateral isoparametric elements. The analysis program NASCOM(Nonlinear Analysis of structrual Concrete by FEM : Monotonic Loading) developed baed on the CFT constitutive relationships and the incremetal solution strategy described enables the predictions of strength and deformation capacities in a full range. crack patterns and their corresponding widths, and yield extents of reinforcement. As the verfication purpose of NASCOM, the prediction of Cervenka's panel test results including the load resistance and the deformation history was made. A limited number of predictions indicate a good correlation in a general sense.
This paper examines the ice cover effects on the seismic response of concrete gravity dam-reservoir-foundation interaction systems subjected to a horizontal earthquake ground motion. ANSYS program is used for finite element modeling and analyzing the ice-dam-reservoir-foundation interaction system. The ice-dam-reservoir interaction system is considered by using the Lagrangian (displacementbased) fluid and solid-quadrilateral-isoparametric finite elements. The Sariyar concrete gravity dam in Turkey is selected as a numerical application. The east-west component of Erzincan earthquake, which occurred on 13 March 1992 in Erzincan, Turkey, is selected for the earthquake analysis of the dam. Dynamic analyses of the dam-reservoir-foundation interaction system are performed with and without ice cover separately. Parametric studies are done to show the effects of the variation of the length, thickness, elasticity modulus and density of the ice-cover on the seismic response of the dam. It is observed that the variations of the length, thickness, and elasticity modulus of the ice-cover influence the displacements and stresses of the coupled system considerably. Also, the variation of the density of the ice-cover cannot produce important effects on the seismic response of the dam.
The thermal eigenvalue responses of the graded sandwich shell structure are evaluated numerically under the variable thermal loadings considering the temperature-dependent properties. The polynomial type rule-based sandwich panel model is derived using higher-order type kinematics considering the shear deformation in the framework of the equivalent single-layer theory. The frequency values are computed through an own home-made computer code (MATLAB environment) prepared using the finite element type higher-order formulation. The sandwich face-sheets and the metal core are discretized via isoparametric quadrilateral Lagrangian element. The model convergence is checked by solving the similar type published numerical examples in the open domain and extended for the comparison of natural frequencies to have the final confirmation of the model accuracy. Also, the influence of each variable structural parameter, i.e. the curvature ratios, core-face thickness ratios, end-support conditions, the power-law indices and sandwich types (symmetrical and unsymmetrical) on the thermal frequencies of FG sandwich curved shell panel model. The solutions are helping to bring out the necessary influence of one or more parameters on the frequencies. The effects of individual and the combined parameters as well as the temperature profiles (uniform, linear and nonlinear) are examined through several numerical examples, which affect the structural strength/stiffness values. The present study may help in designing the future graded structures which are under the influence of the variable temperature loading.

In this paper, the finite element method for the elastodynamic axisymmetric fracture analysis is presented in matrix form through the application of the Galerkin method to the time integral equations of motion with no inertia forces. Isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral element and triangular crack tip singular elements with one-quarter node are used in the mesh division of the finite element model. To show the validity and accuracy of the proposed method, the infinite elastic medium with the penny shaped crack is solved first and compared with the analytical solution and the numerical results by the finite difference method and the boundary element method existing in the published literatures, and then the dynamic stress intensity factors of solid and hollow cylinders of finite dimensions haying penny-shaped cracks and internal and external circumferential tracks are computed in detail.
