  • In this study, it is aimed to prevent the spread of pollutants in the event of a major disaster caused by CBRNE accidents and attacks and build up system to provide optimal transport environment for each patient condition By identifying characteristics of existing products and make them immediately applicable in the field. The purpose of this study is suggesting essential consideration in both functional and performance in the development of the isolation unit. As a result of the study, it suggests (1) basic function, (2) efficient field utilization, (3) isolation unit interface and combination of modules in development of isolation unit.

  • A bacterium, strain YK 391 producing extracellular cytosine deaminase, has been isolated from soil sample collected near Taegu City and identified. The strain YK 391 was observed to be a motile Gram-negative rod, and did not produced capsule nor spore. The bacterium produced acid from glucose and trehalose, not from arabinose. Esculine was nto hydrolyzed. The isolate could grow anaerobically at 37$\circ $C, but not at 4$\circ $C. Palmitoleic and palmitic acids comprised over 80% of the fatty acid composition of the strain. The strain. The strain YK 391 was identified as Chromobacterium violaceum YK 391 based on its morphological and physiolohical characteristics, and on the fatty acid composition. The extracellular cytosine deaminase produced by Chromobacterium violaceum YK 391 is believed to be unique because it was active not only on cytosine and 5-fluorocytosine but also on cytidine.

  • Frequent isolation of Enterococcus faecalis from root canal treated teeth with apical periodontitis, has proposed the role of this organism in endodontic treatment failures. Different factors have been suggested in the pathogenicity of this organism. In this study, 22 E. faecalis isolates from canals of root-filled teeth were identified, and phenotypic and genotypic characteristics were investigated. No resistance to vancomycin and gentamicin was noted, and most isolates (91%) were susceptible to ampicillin. Biofilm formation was detected in 73% of the isolates and may be considered as the most important virulence factor involved in the pathogenesis of these isolates.

  • Polaromonas naphthalenivorans CJ2, responsible for naphthalene degradation at a coal tar contaminated site, was isolated on MSB agar media supplied with naphthalene vapor as the sole carbon source at $10^{\circ}C$. The strain is not isolated under the same isolation condition using the same soil sediment at $20^{\circ}C$ although its optimum temperature is about $20^{\circ}C$. In this work we explored the reason why strain CJ2 could not have been isolated on MSB agar with naphthalene vapor at $20^{\circ}C$. Dispersed CJ2 cells in PBS buffer formed colonies on MSB agar with naphthalene vapor at $10^{\circ}C$ with low naphthalene vapor pressure, but not at $20^{\circ}C$ with high naphthalene vapor pressure. However, streaked cells without resuspension grew on MSB agar with naphthalene vapor at $10^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C$, and even $25^{\circ}C$. Investigation of scanning electron microscopy showed that CJ2 cells formed extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) capsules, which were released easily from CJ2 cells by just dispersion. Therefore, it is concluded that strain CJ2 is able to overcome the naphthalene toxicity by forming a capsule-type barrier around the cells although it is susceptible to naphthalene toxicity at high temperature.

  • Radioiodine (I-131) Therapy has been known one of the methods treated with hyperthyroidism and thyroid tumor, using a separate ward. This technique has been already used for several decades, and its clinical efficacy proven. Today, Radioiodine takes a form of capsule through continuous development, so, 30 odd domestic hospitals run about 63 separate wards. And, its demands would increase continuously; because of tending upwards the patients had thyroid cancer. However, various kinds of wastes originate from a procedure of radioiodine therapy. Especially, when their radioactivity exceed permissible level (4 Bq/$cm^2$) set by Nuclear laws of the Republic of Korea, it regards as radioactive wastes, then, managed separately from origination to the last disposal.

  • Purpose : The aim of this study was to predict radiation dose at 1 meter with BMI(body mass index) in thyroid cancer patients treated with radio-iodine and provide the efficient guideline in the management of patients. Methods : 140 patients from thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer were enrolled. All subjects under went 150 mCi radio-iodine therapy and performed whole body scan 1 week later. BMI(weight divided by square of height) was calculated to evaluate the amount of fatty tissue indirectly. The radiation dose at 1 meter was measured initially and on 2nd days. the relation of values with BMI were analyzed statically. As for the method of statistical analysis, using Med calc Version 9,2,2,0 Program. Results : (1) The initial effective dose was inversely correlated with the BMI. Significance level was 0.0004. (2) We obtained the following formula from the data of initial effective dose and BMI: Y = -30.91X + 350.4(${\mu}Sv/h$)(Y: initial radiation dose, x: Group). (3) After 21.55 hours, than radiation dose was less than those recommended by ICRP or NRC in 53% of the population. Conclusion : Using BMI, the initial radiation dose and 2nd days dose can be predicted in thyroid cancer patients before radio-iodine therapy. It may be used for predicting the time of discharge and control the isolation room. We were able to predict the radiation exposure after discharge using this calculated value.
