Battery energy storage devices (ESDs) have become more and more commonplace to maintain the stability of islanded power systems. Considering the limitation in inverter capacity and the requirement of flexibility in the ESD, the droop control was implemented in paralleled ESDs for higher capacity and autonomous operation. Under the conventional droop control, state-of-charge (SoC) errors between paralleled ESDs is inevitable in the discharging operation. Thus, some ESDs cease operation earlier than expected. This paper proposes an adaptive accelerating parameter to improve the performance of the SoC error eliminating droop controller under the constraints of a microgrid. The SoC of a battery ESD is employed in the active power droop coefficient, which could eliminate the SoC error during the discharging process. In addition, to expedite the process of SoC error elimination, an adaptive accelerating parameter is dedicated to weaken the adverse effect of the constraints due to the requirement of the system running. Moreover, the stability and feasibility of the proposed control strategy are confirmed by small-signal analysis. The effectiveness of the control scheme is validated by simulation and experiment results.
Microgrid is a small-scale power system composed of distributed generators, energy storage system and loads, and can operate in the grid-connected mode and the islanded mode. This paper presents optimal design procedures for remote microgrid. The design program is based on the economic evaluations including the feasibility study module, optimal combination and allocation of DER, power network design and the reduction of the GHG emmission. This program which is suggested in this paper shows good performance as a tool of remote microgrid design.
This paper presents effective operation methods for the battery energy storage applied to a microgrid. In an islanded microgrid, energy storage is needed to satisfy an energy balance between generation and consumption. The microgrid can be classified according to the ratio of the sensitive load and renewable energy source in the microgrid. For effective management of the battery energy storage, based on the classified microgrid, suitable operation methods for the battery energy storage system are provided from well-known battery applications.
The installation of small sized Embedded Generator(EG) in parallel with the utility supply was required several technical complications for protection of the system. One of the most important protection is to provide protection against islanding and out of synchronism reclosing with the utility source. This paper explains several current methods of detecting 'Loss Of Mains'(LOM). But they have not proved completely dependable, in particular when the islanded load's capacity matches that of the EG. A new loss of mains protection algorithm is presented in this paper which based on measurement of the reactive power and node voltage for detecting the islanding condition even though the EG operate in the capacity.
At the moment, with an interest in renewable energy sources (RES) that continue to grow its penetration will be expected to considerably increase in the future power system. However, this penetration of RES leads to new challenges to be solved in electric power systems. In this paper, optimal configuration of renewable energy resources and operation strategy is presented. By using this methodology for allocation of the optimal sizes and types, system operational efficiency and stability of the microgrid will be maximized.

This paper analyse a operating characteristics when the Community Energy System (CES) is operated islanding mode. In the near future, CES might be one of major energy supply structures. The basic concept of CES is that it supplies electrical and thermal energy to the local customer loads through the islanded power network separated from the grid. The CES must be supplying local load with stable energy on the islanding mode, analysing necessary to thoroughly the operation feature. In order to show them, in this paper, we model the CES with 2.34 MVA DG and simulate the operating feature on the islanding mode of CES. The simulation results show that, in order to stability operate, the CES need the efficient load management and generation control schemes during the transition periods.
Due to enhanced demands on quality, security and reliability of the electric power energy system, a microgrid has become a subject of special interest. In this paper, output characteristics of energy storage system (ESS) with an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) and battery energy storage system (BESS) of a renewable energy based microgrid were analyzed under grid-connected and islanded operation modes. The microgrid which consists of photovoltaic and wind power turbine generators, diesel generator, ESS with an EDLC, BESS and loads was modeled using real time digital simulator. The results present the effective control patterns of the microgrid system.
