Climate change has continued to impact meteorological factors like rainfall in many countries including Nigeria. Thus, altering the rainfall patterns which subsequently affect the crop yield. Maize is an important cereal grown in northern Nigeria, along with sorghum, rice, and millet. Due to the challenge of water scarcity during the dry season, it has become critical to design appropriate strategies for planning, developing, and management of the limited available water resources to increase the maize yield. This study, therefore, determines the quantity of water required to produce maize from planting to harvesting and the impact of drought on maize during different growth stages in the region. Rainfall data from six rain gauge stations for a period of 36 years (1979-2014) was considered for the analysis. The standardized precipitation and evapotranspiration index (SPEI) is used to evaluate the severity of drought. Using the CROPWAT model, the evapotranspiration was calculated using the Penman-Monteith method, while the crop water requirements (CWRs) and irrigation scheduling for the maize crop was also determined. Irrigation was considered for 100% of critical soil moisture loss. At different phases of maize crop growth, the model predicted daily and monthly crop water requirements. The crop water requirement was found to be 319.0 mm and the irrigation requirement was 15.5 mm. The CROPWAT 8.0 model adequately estimated the yield reduction caused by water stress and climatic impacts, which makes this model appropriate for determining the crop water requirements, irrigation planning, and management.

The purpose of this study is to analyse the accuracy of weather forecasts of temperature, precipitation probability , and sky condition and to evaluate the applicability of weather forecasts for the estimation of potential evapotranspiration for irrigation scheduling. Five weather station s were selected to compare forecasted and measured climatcal data. The error between forecasted and measured temperature was calculated and discussed. The accuracy of temperature forecast using relative frequency of the error was calculated . The temperature forecasting showed considerably high accuracy. Average sunshine hours for forecasted sky conditions were calculated and showed reasonable quality. From the reliability graphs, the forecasting precipation probabililty was reliable. Potential evapotranspirations were calculated and compared using forecast and measured temperatures. The weather forecast is considered usable for irrigation scheculing.

This study was designed to determine what sensor-based technologies might reliably and accurately predict irrigation scheduling needs of warm-season turfgrass. 'Floratam' St. Augustinegrass[Stenotaphrum secundatum(Walt.) Kuntze] and 'Sea Isle I' seashore paspalum(Paspalum vaginatum Swartz) were established in tubs in the Envirotron Turfgrass Research Laboratory in Gainesville, FL in the spring of 2002. Each grass was subjected to repeated dry-down cycles where irrigation was withheld. Sensor-based data were collected and these evaluations were used to determine if irrigation scheduling could be determined based on plant response during dry-down. Results indicated that reflectance indices($P{\le}0.001$) and soil moisture($P{\le}0.0001$) throughout the dry-down cycle can predict the need for irrigation scheduling as turf quality declined below acceptable levels.

Crop response to weather and internal water pressure changes is more sensitive to crop water stress than soil water content. Recently, its implementation to optimal irrigation scheduling has been receiving much attention. This study was conducted to determine and compare the theoretical crop water stress index (CWSI) using meterological data and canopy temperature collected from three different irrigation treatments, which were Tr-1 plot (rainfed), Tr-2 plot (50% of daily evapotranspiration (ET) irrigated) and Tr-3 plot (75% of daily evapotranspiration (ET) irrigated). The readings of canopy temperature and CWSI were significantly different among irrigation treatment schemes. The average canopy temperatures and CWSIs of Tr-1 and Tr-3 plots were $34.6^{\circ}C$ and $32.6^{\circ}C$, 0.79 and 0.64, respectively. Solar radiation had the biggest correlation with CWSI (R=0.68) which was followed by wind speed, relative humidity and air temperature. Overall, the findings of this study indicated that canopy temperatures and CWSIs could be further used for irrigation scheduling for crop growth.
BACKGROUND: The mulberry cultivars 'Daeshim' and 'Shimgang' were developed in RDA in 2014 and 2017, respectively. 'Daeshim' yields a fruit size bigger than that of other varieties and has a productivity of over 70%, whereas 'Shimgang' has a high yield and a special characterization against the mulberry popcorn disease. In our study, a compositional comparison of these popular cultivars in Korea was undertaken to explore the nutrient profiles of mulberry fruit and promote the development of the rich minerals and flavonoids in mulberry fruit as performing each other irrigation time. METHODS AND RESULTS: These two cultivars were collected from the Sericulture and Apiculture Division, RDA, in Korea to investigate their amounts, weights, minerals, and flavonoid content using each other instrument. After 6 h of irrigation treatment, the amount of fruit (kg/tree) from Daeshim and Shimgang increased by 17.5 and 15.2 kg/tree, respectively. The total flavonoid content from Daeshim and Shimgang was determined to be 132.9 mg and 36.3 mg, respectively, after the 6 h irrigation treatment. CONCLUSION: Appropriate irrigation treatment methods such as water scheduling and volume will help increase fruit quantities and farmer incomes. It would be interesting to conduct further in-depth research on these fruits so that consumers can benefit from them as a food additive.

The development of infrared thermometry has led many researchers to use plant temperatures, and specifically the temperature of the crop canopy in the field, for estimating the water stress of a crop. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of leaf temperature in irrigation scheduling. An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with chinese cabbage. Leaf temperature was measured with infrared thermometry and evapotranspiration of the crop was measured by lysimeters. Influence of the difference between leaf temperature and air temperature on crop evapotranspiration was evaluated under varying water stress condition. A further objective was to evaluate the effect of other climatic variables on the relationship between evapotranspiration and temperature difference between leaf and air. A statistical model for estimating evapotranspiration using the temperature difference, relative humidity. and radiation was developed and tested. Crop water stress index was calculated using vapour pressure deficit and the temperature difference. Relations between the crop water stress index and crop evapotranspiration was tested. The index was closely related with evapotranspiration.

Rice has always been the anchor of food security in the Philippines and the government is adamant about sustaining rice production by ensuring reliable irrigation water availability. Among the numerous irrigation schemes, the importance of the Pulangui River Irrigation System (PRIS) is undeniable, as it is the largest and primary irrigation source for rice production areas which are considered the food basket in Northern Mindanao. However, the ageing irrigation structures, unlined canals, long-standing water delivery systems, and climate change are compromising the performance of PRIS; and every year, during the dry and wet season, the maximum rice irrigable area is not achieved. From the field-scale water management perspective, untimely irrigation application, an unregulated roster of turn for irrigation among farmers, and the traditional practice of flooding the rice fields are the main causes of substantial water losses in conveyance, distribution, and farm application of irrigation water. Hence, proper irrigation scheduling is crucial to cultivate the maximum irrigable area by ensuring equity among the farmers and to increase the water use efficiency and yield. In this study, the FAO single crop coefficient approach was adopted to estimate rice water requirements, which were subsequently used to suggest appropriate irrigation schedules based on the recommended field-scale rice cultivation practices. The study results would improve the irrigation system management in the study area by facilitating in regulating the canal water flows and releases according to suggested irrigation schedules that could lead to increased benefited area, yield, and water efficiency without straining the available water resources.
