  • High speed railway, KTX has started commercial service last you and passengers is increasing. To secure the safety and reliability of high speed railway, it is necessary to inspect and maintain the rail regularities. Several methods of measuring track irregularities are developed in other railway advanced countries. In this paper, we introduce foreign track Inspection methods and application scheme to Koreans.

The Occurrence Climatology of Equatorial Plasma Bubbles: A Review

  • Electron density irregularities in the equatorial ionosphere at night are understood in terms of plasma bubbles, which are produced by the transport of low-density plasma from the bottomside of the F region to the topside. Equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) have been detected by various techniques on the ground and from space. One of the distinguishing characteristics of EPBs identified from long-term observations is the systematic seasonal and longitudinal variation of the EPB activity. Several hypotheses have been developed to explain the systematic EPB behavior, and now we have good knowledge about the key factors that determine the behavior. However, gaps in our understanding of the EPB climatology still remain primarily because we do not yet have the capability to observe seed perturbations and their growth simultaneously and globally. This paper reviews the occurrence climatology of EPBs identified from observations and the current understanding of its driving mechanisms.

지진 하중을 받는 평면 비정형 건물의 편심과 손상도의 상관관계에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Relationship between the Eccentricity and the Level of Damage in the Seismic Response of Buildings with Plan Irregularities)

  • 비정형 평면을 가진 건물의 추가적인 손상의 원인이 되는 비틀림과 비정형성의 척도인 편심과의 관계에 대한 많은 연구들이 진행되어 왔으나 손상도와 편심의 직접적인 관계에 대한 연구는 수행된 적이 거의 없다. 본 연구에서는 비정형 평면을 가진 건물의 복잡한 지진 응답에 적용할 수 있는 3차원 손상도 계수를 이용하여 건물의 손상도와 편심에 대한 정량적인 관계를 분석하였다. 이를 통해 건물의 편심이 커지면 최대변위는 줄어들지만 비틀림 거동이 증가하여, 손상의 집중으로 인해 전반적인 손상도 계수가 증가함이 관찰되었다. 또한, 2차원 주기가 비슷한 경우에는, 건물의 길이가 최대변위와 최대 비틀림에 미치는 영향이 작으며 이로 인해 전체 손상도 계수에도 그 영향이 미미한 것으로 관찰되었다. 해석 결과를 바탕으로 중약진 지역에서 편심의 크기가 10%, 20%, 30%인 단층 건물은 편심이 없는 건물에 비해서 각각 평균 3~5%, 13~18%, 33~47% 정도의 손상도 증가가 있을 것으로 분석하였다. 이와 같은 편심-손상도 관계는비정형 평면을 가진 건물의 내진 설계에 있어서 기본 구조 계획 수립과 내진 성능 평가에 유용한 자료가 될 것으로 생각된다.

Collapse response assessment of low-rise buildings with irregularities in plan

  • The present paper aims at evaluating damage and collapse behavior of low-rise buildings with unidirectional mass irregularities in plan (torsional buildings). In previous earthquake events, such buildings have been exposed to extensive damages and even total collapse in some cases. To investigate the performance and collapse behavior of such buildings from probabilistic points of view, three-dimensional three and six-story reinforced concrete models with unidirectional mass eccentricities ranging from 0% to 30% and designed with modern seismic design code provisions specific to intermediate ductility class were subjected to nonlinear static as well as extensive nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) under a set of far-field real ground motions containing 21 two-component records. Performance of each model was then examined by means of calculating conventional seismic design parameters including the response reduction (R), structural overstrength (${\Omega}$) and structural ductility (${\mu}$) factors, calculation of probability distribution of maximum inter-story drift responses in two orthogonal directions and calculation collapse margin ratio (CMR) as an indicator of performance. Results demonstrate that substantial differences exist between the behavior of regular and irregular buildings in terms of lateral load capacity and collapse margin ratio. Also, results indicate that current seismic design parameters could be non-conservative for buildings with high levels of plan eccentricity and such structures do not meet the target "life safety" performance level based on safety margin against collapse. The adverse effects of plan irregularity on collapse safety of structures are more pronounced as the number of stories increases.

SEM-EDX를 이용한 침 끝의 미세 부착물의 조성에 대한 관찰 (Investigation of Micromorphological Characteristics of Acupuncture Needle Tip Using SEM-EDX)

  • Objectives : There have been several studies about the quality of acupuncture needle tip recently. We have investigated the condition of the tip of the acupuncture needles in the last studies. In the former studies, we discovered the metallic scuff, lumps and irregularities of the acupuncture needle tips under the microscope. But, no information was available on those foreign materials' identity. Methods : We have selected 200 needles of 1000 pieces from several companies by randomized methods. And we observed the tip of the 6 needles selected finally at ${\times}1000\;or\;{\times}3000$ magnification and analyzed the components of the metallic scuff, lumps and irregularities of the needle tips with a SEM-EDX analyser. Results : We found that the identity of the metallic scuff, lumps and irregularities of the needle tips were metallic materials and silicon. For example, A point was composed of Fe(69.78%), Cr(17.71%), Ni(8.11%), Zn(2.04%), Si(1.23%), Mn(1.12%), and B point was composed of Si(66.40%), Fe(26.76%), Cr(6.84%). Conclusion : The results of this study confirm that there is a real possibility of the remaining of metallic materials and silicon in body of patient, after acupuncture treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to intensify our efforts to make needles of good quality and to concentrate on manufacturing process of acupuncture needles completely to be free from danger in acupuncture treatment.

40.8 MHz coherent scatter ionospheric radar observations of E- and F-region field aligned irregularities over Korea

  • The new coherent scatter ionospheric radar has been operating at Gyerong city ($36.18^{\circ}N$, $127.14^{\circ}E$, dip lat $26.7^{\circ}N$), South Korea. This VHF radar is consisted of 24 Yagi antennas having 5 elements and observes the E- and F-region field-aligned irregularities (FAIs) in a single frequency of 40.8 MHz with a peak power of 24 kW. We present the first results of the E- and F-region FAIs over Korea by using the new VHF coherent scatter ionospheric radar. The morphological and echo characteristics are studied in terms of their echo strength, Doppler velocity and also by spectral width values. From the continuous observations from December 2009, we found ionospheric E- and F-region FAIs appeared frequently. The most interesting and striking observations for E region are occurrence of daytime E-region irregularities and strong Quasi-Periodic (QP) echoes at nighttime. And for F region, strong post-sunset and pre-sunrise FAIs appeared frequently. The VHF radar observations over Korea are discussed in the light of current understanding of mid-latitude E- and F-region FAIs.

주파수영역 전달함수를 이용한 궤도틀림 식별 (Identification of Track Irregularity by Frequency-Domain Transfer Function)

  • 본 연구에서는 대차에서 계측한 가속도 데이터를 사용하여 궤도틀림을 식별하기 위한 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 등가 SISO 모델에 의한 정상궤도틀림 상태에서의 대차진동과 궤도틀림과의 주파수영역 전달함수를 정의하고, 이를 역으로 이용하여 대차에서 계측한 가속도 데이터로 궤도틀림을 예측하였다. 예측된 값과 기준값과의 잔차의 분산 비로정의되는 틀림지수를 사용하여 궤도틀림의 이상을 분석하였다. 궤도틀림을 시간에 따라 변하는 변위 경계조건으로 고려하여 3차원 수치예제를 수행하였으며, 제안된 알고리즘의 타당성을 검증하였다.

Case study of random vibration analysis of train-bridge systems subjected to wind loads

  • In order to reveal the independent relationship between track irregularity and wind loads, the stochastic characteristics of train-bridge coupling systems subjected to wind loads were investigated by the multi-sample calculation. The vehicle was selected as 23 degrees of freedom dynamical model, and the bridge was described by three-dimensional finite element model. It was assumed that the wind loads were random processes with strong spatial correlation, while the track irregularities were stationary random ones. As a case study, a high-speed train running on a cable-stayed bridge subjected to wind loads was studied. The effect of rail irregularities was deemed to be independent of the effect of wind excitations on the coupling system in the same wind circumstance for the same project, leading to the conclusion that the effect of wind loads and moving vehicle could be calculated separately. The variance results of the stochastic responses of vehicle-bridge coupling system under the action of wind loads and rail irregularities together were equivalent to the sum of the variance of the responses induced by each excitation. Therefore, when one of the input excitations is different, only the effect of changed loads needs to be assessed. Moreover, the new calculated results were combined with the effect of unchanged loads to present the stochastic response of coupling system subjected to the different excitations, reducing the cost of computations. The stochastic characteristics, the CFD (cumulative distribution function) of the coupling system with different wind velocities, vehicle speed, and vehicle marshalling were studied likewise.

Seismic analysis of high-rise steel frame building considering irregularities in plan and elevation

  • Irregularities of a building in plan and elevation, which results in the change in stiffness on different floors highly affect the seismic performance and resistance of a structure. This study motivated to investigate the seismic responses of high-rise steel-frame buildings of twelve stories with various stiffness irregularities. The building has five spans of 3200 mm distance in both X- and Z-directions in the plan. The design package SAP2000 was adopted for the design of beams and columns and resulted in the profile IPE500 for the beams of all floors and box sections for columns. The column cross-section dimensions vary concerning the number of the story; one to three: 0.50×0.50×0.05m, four to seven: 0.45×0.45×0.05 m, and eight to twelve: 0.40×0.40×0.05 m. Real recorded ground accelerations obtained from the Vrancea earthquake in Romania together with dead and live loads corresponding to each story were considered for the applied load. The model was validated by comparing the results of the current method and literature considering a three-bay steel moment-resisting frame of eight-story height subject to seismic load. To investigate the seismic performance of the buildings, the time-history analysis was performed using ABAQUS. Deformed shapes corresponding to negative and positive peaks were provided followed by the story drifts and fragility curves which were used to examine the probability of collapse of the building. From the results, it was concluded that regular buildings provided a seismic performance much better than irregular buildings. Furthermore, it was observed that building with torsional irregularity was more vulnerable to seismic failure.

보조기층재로 제강슬래그가 사용된 아스팔트 포장면 불량 원인 분석 (Analysis of the Cause of Defects in Asphalt Pavement Using Steel Slag as Auxiliary Base Material)

  • 본 연구에서는 창원시 관내 도로 중 제강슬래그가 보조기층재로 사용된 도로에서 지속적인 포장면 크랙과 요철이 발생하여 물류운송의 불편 및 사고의 위험도가 증가하며 유지보수 예산 및 행정력 손실 등의 어려움이 있어 포장면 크랙 및 요철 발생 원인을 파악하고자 하였다. 3개 대상 도로에서 포장 절단 및 굴착을 실시하고 시료를 채취하여 수침 팽창시험과 X선 회절분석시험을 수행하였다. 제강슬래그의 주요 팽창원인은 CaO와 MgO의 수화반응 결과이며, CaO는 수개월 내에 수화반응이 종료되나 MgO는 소성되는 온도에 따라 반응 속도가 매우 느린 것으로 알려져 있다. X선 회절분석 시험 결과 3개 도로에서 채취된 시료의 MgO 함유량은 전체 평균 약 47%, CaO 함유량은 전체 평균 약 14%로 높은 MgO 함유량을 보였으며, MgO에 의한 느린 수화반응으로 인한 팽창이 장기적으로 도로 융기를 유발하고 그로인하여 도로 포장면에 크랙 및 요철이 발생된 것으로 판단된다.
