A Structural Engineer's Approach to Differential Vertical Shortening in Tall Buildings

  • Vertical shortening in tall buildings would be of little concern if all vertical elements shortened evenly. However, vertical elements such as walls and columns may shorten different amounts due to different service axial stress levels. With height, the differential shortening may become significant and impact the strength design and serviceability of the building. Sometimes column transfers or other vertical structural irregularities may cause differential shortening. If differential shortening is not addressed properly, it can impact the serviceability of the building. This paper takes the perspective of a structural engineer in planning the design, predicting the shortening and its effects, and communicating the information to the contractor.

경부고속철도 토공부의 자갈도상에 대한 진동특성 연구 (A Study on Dynamic characteristics in the Ballast gravel in Gyeongbu High Speed Railway)

  • The gravel ballast in the ballasted track has the function to not only transfer/scatter the train loads to subgrade through rail and sleeper but also elastically support the train loads. Because track irregularities results inevitably from the repetitive train loads, the track maintenance should be undertaken for correcting them. By analyzing the track maintenance history in the Gyeongbu high speed railway, this study tries to choose the local two spots in the railway in which the repair frequencies are maximum and relative small; to analyze their dynamic characteristics as well as grade; and to compare them with maintenance history. As the dynamic characteristics of track, the vertical displacement and vibrating acceleration of sleeper as well as acceleration of ballast are measured/analyzed. Furthermore, by collecting soil and gravel on the reinforced roadbed and undertaking ballast screening test, the size distributions are compared with grade distribution standards of high speed railway.

  • Chopper and sensors failures resulting from electric shock and mechanical vibration generated by rail irregularities are the serious problem deteriorating the performance in the electromagnetic suspension systems. Thus, this paper proposes a reliable output feedback control scheme for the electromagnetic suspension systems in the present of chopper, gap sensor and acceleration sensor failures. The designed controller is an extended version of a novel design technique which has the design method of the output feedback controller using dynamic compensator. The benefits of this scheme are demonstrated through the simulation and experimental results for proposed controller against chopper, gap sensor and acceleration sensor failures of electromagnetic suspension system.

산마늘의 캘러스세포에서 체세포군 변이의 핵학적 분석 (Karyological Analysis of Somaclonal Variation in Callus Cells of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum)

  • Calli obtained from basal disc explants of Allium victorialis var.platyphyllum wre grown in three kinds of nutrient media (MS, BDS, and B5), and the frequencies of mitotic index and the chromosomal aberrations were analysed. The mitotic index varied from 0.55% to 1.01% with respect to culture media and ages. The mitotic irregularities like micro-, bi- and multi-nuclei, chromosome bridge and laggards were noted in each types of calli. The chromosome number variations observed in metaphase stage were identified aneuploid and tetraploid. Structural variations such as dicentric chromosomes, centromere breakage and small chromosomes were observed. Relationship between basal medium and chromosomal variability was not observed in this study. But, in BDS medium, NAA and BA had a more effect on number variation than kinetin.

  • Attempts were made in order to make clear the meiotic irregularities, male gametophyte formation and spermatogenesis for the purpose of applying these embryological facts to taxonomic works. Followings are the results obtained : 1. Meiosis is extremely irregular, giving rise to giant, micro, and empty, pollens. Meiotic division in each PMC is observed synchronizing. 2. In the microspore immediately before the vegetative-generative nuclear division, the nucleus locates appressed to the inner wall, most of the other part of the cell being occupied by large vacuoles. 3. Spindle symmetry in the microspore nuclear division is of intermediate type. 4. Nuclear divisions in each micropore are not synchronized as in meiosis. 5. Generative nucleus is located in close contact with the inner wall, while the vegetative nucleus occupies the central part of pollen grain. The pollen in this stage looks somewhat like broad bean. Afterward the generative nucleus loses contact with the wall, the nuclear shape changing from lenticular to roundsh. 6. The generative nucleus in fully matured pollen grain usually takes the shape of crescence, those in abortive pollen, lenticular or ellipsoidal, etc.

궤도의 불규칙성을 고려한 철도교량의 동적응답분석 (Dynamics Responses of Railway Bridges for Track Irregularities)

  • 본 연구에서는 경부고속철도의 주요 교량형식인 PSC 박스교량을 3차원 뼈대요소를 사용하여 모형화하였으며, 궤도불규칙성의 형상은 지수 스펙트럴 밀도함수를 사용하여 생성시켰다. 경부고속철도차량(K-TGV)중 동력차는 17자유도의 3차원 주행열차로 모형화하였고, 이러한 교량, 궤도불규칙성 및 차량 모형을 이용하여 교량과 차량의 상호작용을 해석할 수 있는 프로그램을 개발하였다. 동적해석을 위한 교량과 차량의 운동방정식은 Lagrange 방정식을 사용하여 유도하였으며, 운동방정식의 수치해석에는 Newmark-β법을 사용하였다. 개발된 프로그램을 이용하여 동력차의 주행에 의한 교량의 시간이력곡선을 구하였으며, 궤도불규칙성의 영향을 분석하였다. 또한 도상의 유무에 따른 교량동적거동의 특성과 함께 열하중의 편심의 영향도 분석하였다.

Fractal Approach to Passivated Surface of Stainless Steel

  • The morphology of the passivated surface of stainless steel (SS) was quantitatively characterized based on fractal geometry. In particular, the surface irregularities of the passivated 304 and 439 SSs were comparatively analyzed in terms of their self-similar fractal dimensions. The passivated surface of 439 SS in an acid-based electrolyte proved to have a higher fractal dimension, as compared to that of 304 SS, esp. at a scale of several tens of nanometers, strongly indicating the higher irregularity of the passivated surface. It is anticipated that the fractal approach suggested herein might be effectively utilized to analyze the irregularity of the steel surface and/or the compactness of the oxide film.

  • 본 연구는 목적은 1층에 연층/약층 및 비틀림 비정형성을 동시에 보유한 우리나라 비내진 현존 필로티형 저층 집합주택의 내진 취약성을 평가하는 것이다. 해석 구조물로서 4층 RC 집합 주택이 선정되었고, 선형 동적 해석법을 사용하여 해석되었으며, FEMA356에 의하여 평가되었다. 해석 결과 본 구조물은 FEMA356의 선형 동적 해석법 규정을 만족하였다.

  • Distubance of air-gap sensors by rail irregularities are the serious problem deteriorating the performance in the electromagnetic suspension (EMS) systems. Thus, this paper proposes the output feedback controller with discrete kalman filter for the EMS systems. The discrete kalman filter estimate true state value and output feedback controller guarantee stability. The benefit of this scheme are shown by simulation. Therefore air-gap disturbance are rejected successfully.

  • Piezoelectric solids such as PZT and PLZT have been widely used as sensors or actuators for various smart structural systems. The main problem occurring in the applications is that a larger and larger actuation force is required to maximize the function of the system. This naturally leads to local concentrations of electric or stress fields near crack tips or geometric irregularities and thereby results in a nonlinear behavior of the system Hence, it becomes more important to Predict the nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric solids In this Paper we investigate the micro-mechanism of nonlinear behavior in piezoelectric materials and propose constitutive equations. The calculation results obtained from an associated finite element Program are shown to be qualitatively consistent with experiments.
