  • Coastal vegetation consists of rooted flowering marine plants that provide a variety of ecosystem services to the coastal areas they colonize. The attenuation of currents and waves and sediment stabilization are often listed among these services. From this point of view, artificial seaweed is an effective method of controlling sea bed sediment and stabilization without damaging the landscape or the stability of the coastline. A series of hydraulic experiments were performed in a wave channel with regular and irregular waves to examine the effect of artificial seaweed in relation to scouring and beach erosion prevention. Based on the results of these experiments, the coastal vegetation model is efficient against scouring and beach erosion.

  • When we apply a propagation model to the ocean with boundaries, we can calculate reflected wave using reflection coefficient suggested by Rayleigh assuming the boundaries are flat. But boundaries in ocean such as sea surface and sea bottom have an irregular rough surface. To calculate the reflection loss for an irregular boundary, it is needed to compute the coherent reflection coefficient based on an experimental formula or scattering theory. In this article, we derive the coherent reflection coefficients for a fluid-fluid interface using perturbation theory, Kirchhoff approximation and small-slope approximation respectively. Based on each formula, we can calculate coherent reflection coefficients for a rough sea surface or sea bottom, and then compare them to the Rayleigh reflection coefficient to analyze the reflection loss for a random rough surface. In general, the coherent reflection coefficient based on small-slope approximation has a wide valid region. Comparing it with the coherent reflection coefficients derived from the Kirchhoff approximation and perturbation theory, we discuss a valid region of them.

  • In this study, 3-dimensional virtual visualization was performed for a rapid and accurate analysis of sea bottom topography. The visualization was done through the extracted data using the developed program and the generated data using the gridding method. The data extraction program was developed with AutoLISP programming language and this program was able to extract the needed sample bathymetry data from the electronic sea chart systematically as well as effectively The gridded bathymetry data were generated by the interpolation or extrapolation method from the spatially-irregular sample data. As the result of realization for the 3-dimensional virtual visualization, it was shown a proper feasibility in the analysis of the sea bottom topography to determine the route of submarine cable burial.

  • A three-dimensional hydrodynamical numerical model of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea is formulated having irregular coastal boundaries and non-uniform depth distribution represntative of nature. The developed model is used to derive the currents driven by a steady uniform wind stress on the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. Numerical experiments have been performed with the model to determine the response of the shelf to stationary wind stress fields suddenly imposed on the shelf for wind directions of NW and SW winds and wind stress of 1.6dyn/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The dynamical feature of the derived circulation are presented and discussed.

  • The characters of linear response of ship among irregular waves were researched. But nonlinear characters of ship motion in irregular waves have not been considered. Then the author showed a method to linearize nonlinearity of damping coefficient of ship by making statistically equivalent linear theory and get equivalent gain K from the condition that the difference of variance between linear response and approximate response is minimum and show that the results of correlogram and spectrum, obtained from this method, for model 700 GT Ferry boat agree with the actual response. The author pays a particular attention not to the nonlinear element but to nonlinear system itself.

  • The present study is concerned with the numerical analysis of the sloshing impact pressure of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers in rough sea. The reliable predictions of the both random tank motions in irregular waves and violent fluid flow in the LNG tanks are required for practical sloshing analysis procedure of LNG carriers. The three-dimensional numerical model adopting SOLA-VOF scheme is used to predict violent free surface movements of LNG tank in irregular motions. For accurate input motion of tank, a three-dimensional panel method program called SSMP (Samsung Ship Motion Program) is applied for seakeeping analysis. Comparison studies of sloshing analysis are carried out for No.2 tank of 138K and 205K LNG carriers to verify the safety of the LNG containment system of the proposed 205K large LNG carrier.

  • Many coastal engineering designs utilize empirical formulas containing the Equivalent Deep-water Wave Height (EDWH), which is normally given a priori. However, no studies have explicitly discussed a method for determining the EDWH and the resulting design wave heights (DEWH) under irregular wave conditions. Unfortunately, it has been the case in many design practices that the EDWH is incorrectly estimated by dividing the Shallow-water Wave Height (SWH) at the structural position with its corresponding shoaling coefficient of regular wave. The present study reexamines the relationship between the Shallow-water Wave Height (SWH) at the structural position and its corresponding EDWH. Then, a new procedure is proposed to facilitate the correct estimation of EDWH. In this procedure, the EDWH and DEWH are determined differently according to the wave propagation model used to estimate the SWH. For this, Goda's original method for nonlinear irregular wave deformation is extended to produce values for linear shoaling. Finally, exemplary calculations are performed to assess the possible errors caused by a misuse of the wave height calculation procedure. The relative errors with respect to the correct values could exceed 20%, potentially leading to a significant under-design of coastal or harbor structures in some cases.

  • Korea contract Mn-nodule field in the NE equatorial Pacific is composed of seven sectors with average water depths of 4,513-5,025 m. Of the various factors controlling the properties of Mn-nodule, it seems that water depth is likely connected to the chemical composition and occurrence of nodules. To test whether such an assumption held in each sector, we reviewed previous research data accumulated since 1994 for one of the northern sectors (hereafter KR1) where there are stark contrasts in water depth. High-resolution seabed mapping clearly separates a northern part (KR1N) from a deeper southern part (KR1S), cutting across in the middle of the KR1. In addition, significant volcanic activities forming numerous seamounts are distinctive especially in KR1N. In terms of nodule occurrence, manganese nodules in KR1S are comparatively larger (2-4 cm) with a discoidal shape, while those in KR1N are generally small (<2 cm) with poly-lobate and irregular shapes. Nodules in KR1N also have lower Co, Cu, Mn and Ni, and higher Fe contents. The spatial separation in nodule characteristics might be caused by volcanic activities in KR1N rather than water depth contrast. During the formation of the seamounts in KR1N, rock fragments and volcanic ashes as new nuclei of the nodules would have been continuously generated. As a result, the nodules could not grow larger than 2 cm and display the shapes of a newbie (i.e., irregular and poly-lobate shapes). Moreover, significant Fe supply from volcanic activities probably decreases the Mn/Fe ratio, which may lead to the KR1 nodules being misinterpreted as a hydrogenic in origin compared to other sectors where a high Mn/Fe ratio is present.
