Metallurgical Study on the Iron Artifacts Excavated from Sudang-ri Site in Geumsan (금산 수당리유적 출토 철제유물의 금속학적 연구)

  • The Sudang-ri Site in Geumsan is considered the historic site where Baekje dominated the inland traffic route to Gaya through Geumsan and Jinan in the 5th Century. This study identified the production techniques of iron by conducting an analysis of metallographical microstructure of the artifacts such as an iron sword and an iron sickle that were excavated in Sudang-ri Site, Geumsan, one of the regions ruled by Baekje, and tried to figure out the characteristics and the technical systems of Baekje's ironmaking around the 5th Century by comparing them with other iron artifacts produced around the same time. The analysis showed that various production techniques were applied to the artifacts excavated in Sudang-ri Site, Geumsan. Depending on the production techniques, they can be divided largely into three methods: the simple shape-forging method, the steel manufacture method after forging, and the steel manufacture & heat-treatment method after forging. The iron sickle from the stone chamber tomb No. 1, which was produced only through forging, is mostly composed of soft ferrite at both edges of the blade and at the rear making the use of the weapon impractical. From this fact, it is presumed that they were produced as burial objects or ceremonial accessories for the person buried. The iron axe from the outer stone coffin tomb No. 1 and the iron swords and sickle from the outer stone coffin tomb No. 12, which were produced through the steel manufacture method after forging such as carburizing, did not go through the heat treatment such as quenching, but applied different production processes to each part. Therefore, it is deemed that they were produced as daily tools for cultivation rather than burial objects or ceremonial accessories. The production techniques following the forging process - carburizing and heat treatment - can be found on the iron swords from the outer stone coffin tomb No. 5 and the outer stone coffin tomb No. 12. The sturdy structure of the blade part and the durable structure of the rear processed with heat are deemed to have been produced as weaponry and used by the person buried. Based on the analysis of the iron artifacts excavated from Sudang-ri Site in Geumsan, the characteristics of iron production techniques were investigated by comparing them with the artifacts from Yongwon-ri Site in Cheonan, Bongseon-ri Site in Seocheon, and Bujang-ri Site in Seosan that were made around the same time as the cluster of Baekje tombs examined by the metallographical microstructure analysis of this study. For the iron artifacts analyzed here, the changes in the techniques were investigated using the iron swords common in all of the tombs. In the case of the iron swords, it was identified the heat treatment technique called tempering was applied from the 4th Century.

  • The practice of identifying the potential zones for mineral exploration in a speedy and low-cost method includes the use of satellite imagery analysis as a part of remote sensing techniques. It is challenging to explore the iron mineralization of a region through conventional methods which are a time-consuming process. The current study utilizes the Hyperion satellite imagery for mapping the iron mineralization and associated geological features in the Irikkur region, Kannur, Kerala. Along with the remote sensing results, the field study and laboratory-based analysis were conducted to retrieve the ground truth point and geochemical proportion to verify the iron ore mineralization. The MC simulation showed for shielding properties indicate an increase in the linear attenuation coefficient with raising the Fe2O3+SiO2 concentrations in the investigated rocks where it is varied at 0.662 MeV in the range 0.190 cm-1 - 0.222 cm-1 with rising the Fe2O3+SiO2 content from 57.86 wt% to 71.15 wt%. The analysis also revealed that when the γ-ray energy increased from 0.221 MeV to 2.506 MeV, sample 1 had the largest linear attenuation coefficient, ranging from 9.33 cm1 to 0.12 cm-1. Charnockite rocks were found to have exceptional shielding qualities, making them an excellent natural choice for radiation shielding applications.

  • From the discovery of Alago's disk, a number of trials and efforts have been concentrated on a small-sized and light-weighted induction motor. They have devoted themseleves, however, mainly to a improvement of cooling effect, a proper weight-distribution of copper and iron and desirable number of slots. In consequence, such an effort restricted only to the field of design, has resulted in unsatisfactory developments in the insulating materials consisting of the main parts of an induction motor. The quality of fibre and paper which are used as class-A insulation materials with their "compound" and "varnish" has been increased to some extent. Similarly Class-B insulation materials like asbest mica has been almost a combination of inorganic and binding materials. But nowadays synthesic chemistry is making a remarkable progress. So it comes possible for us to have silicon resin and other good ones of similar charateristics. And even a thin silicon resin insures us to get excellent heat-pro f and insulation, so a better space factor and cost-down in motor design have come possible in most advanced nations of the world, but not in our country. Furthermore, a consideration of productivity and economy in manufacturing process has been neglected by a majority of engineers. This is more unpleasant und more undesirable. I think this rational method of induction motor design using new synthesic resin will devote in making your productivity and economy better.   • The hot stove system is a process that is continuously and constantly generating the hot combustion air required for the blast furnace. The hot stove process is considered as a main energy consumption process because it consumes about $20\%$ of the total energy in steel making works. So, many researchers have interested in the improvement of the heat efficiency of the hot stove to reduce the energy consumption. But they have difficulties in improving the heat efficiency of the hot stove because there is no precise information on heat transformation occurring during the heating period. In order to model the relationship between the operating conditions and heat efficiencies, we propose a neural network using feature extraction as one of experimental modeling methods. In order to show the performance of the model, we compare it with Partial Least Square (PLS) method. Both methods have similarities in using the dimension reduction technique. And then we present the simulation results on the prediction of the heat efficiency of the hot stove.

Material Characteristics of Smelting Slags Produced by Reproduction Experiment of Ancient Iron Smelting : According to Ca Content (고대 제철기술 복원실험에서 산출된 제련재의 칼슘함량에 따른 재료학적 특성)

  • In the ancient iron-making process, a slag former was often added so that iron and other minerals in the ore could be smoothly separated. However, there are insufficient data for judging whether a slag former was added. Thus, in this study, we conducted a smelting experiment to understand the material characteristics of a steel structure that differed depending on the addition of a slag former. It was found that the steel structure produced in the first experiment had a total Fe content of 39.45-52.94 wt%, which decreased to 34.89-38.92 wt% in the second and third experiments. CaO compounds such as calcite, gehlenite, and hercynite appeared, in addition to iron oxides, after the addition of a slag former. As a result of an assessment of whether a slag former was added by comparing the ratio between the components, it was found that the ratio of $CaO/SiO_2$ was 0.42. From a comparative analysis of $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ and $CaO/SiO_2$, it was judged that the ratio of $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ can be utilized as an index to judge similar systems of smelting process (ore, furnace wall, and fuel).

  • The control logic of steam temperature was redesigned, tested and applied to the power plant after its steam temperature equipments had been revised. This power plant use the ancillary gas gotten in the process of making iron in the steel mill. The boiler of power plant has the superheater and reheater to make the superheated steam. The superheater and reheater have the spray valve to control their temperature. The reheater has the gas bypass damper additionally in this plant. The control logics were redesigned in cascade forms and the initial parameters of control logics were calculated from the several step tests. The final parameters could be obtained through the several repeated tests and the feedforward functions were added by temperature deviation and air flow. The power plant is being commercially-operated normally by improved control logics and It is expected that this improved controls help the efficiency improvement and safe operation of plant.

  • It is necessary for us to maintain good the quality of products in iron and steel making process, especially in the rolling mill plants. Thus, we need check the stability criteria of control systems. In the frequency domain, the whole system including controllers can be identified using FFT analyzer. But this method is not adequete where precise identification is demanded. Thus a way to complement the defects In the frequency domain analysis using FFT analyzer is introduced. And In the time domain, to establish the stability criteria on the control systems, the assumed parameters obtained using least square method are presented in this report.

  • Coke oven is used in an iron-making process for producing coke through devolatilization of the coking coal. An unsteady 2-dimensional model of solid bed is proposed to simulate a coke oven. The model contains governing equations with partial differential equation forms for the solid phase and the gas phase. Drying and devolatilization of coking coal, heat transfer, and generation of internal pores in the coking coal are also reflected to the source terms. Simulation results show a reasonable trend compared with the physical data.
