  • Although the problems of defects and nonmetallic inclusion in metal fatigue are very complicated, it is particularly important to view these problems from the perspective that defects and inclusions are virtually equivalent to small cracks. This concept will help one to understand various fatigue phenomena caused by Ductile Cast Iron. For different ferrite-pearlite matrix structure, containing more than 90% spheroidal ratio of graphite, GCD 45-3, GCD 50, GCD 60 series and 70%, 80%, 90% spheroidal ratio of graphite, GCD 40, GCD 45-1, GCD 45-2 series, this paper has carried out image analyzer, estimated maximum and mean size of graphite, investigated correlation. It was concluded as follows. (1) A good quality of Ductile cast iron using in this experiment, the graphite was separated well. The effect of the interaction by graphite was verified by microscopic observation and by fracture mechanics investigation in surface, interior of the specimen. (2)${\sqrt{area}}_{max}$ of graphite can be used to predict fatigue limit of Ductile Cast Iron. The Statistical distribution of extreme values of ${\sqrt{area}}$ may be used as a guide line for the control of inclusion size in the steel making processes.

  • Iron artifacts from Busǒ Sansǒng inffered to late Baikjae periodwere studied on the aspects of metallugy. These materials were the largest size ever since excavated. From the analytical results these artifacts were found to be pureiron system without impurities or hypo-eutectoid steel system in below 0.3% in carbon contents. From the content of phosphorus in the range of 0.03∼0.05% as aim purity it was shown that charcoal were used for making these iron artifacts from sponge iron not fusion method. By observing metallugical structure it was found that iron artifacts was manufactured by repetitive folding and hammering forging method and some by heating method for adding carbon with cool water. This method were to improve the quality of the soften steel to harden one. In addition to those above repetitive hammering method eliminated the nonferrous materials such as slag inclusion and remained relatively pure ferrite.

  • In this study, we investigated the grinding and sedimentation(elutriation) process of the dusts for the effective separation of high purity iron and iron oxides. For characterization of the dust, particle size distribution and chemical composition, were examined. The results obtained in this study may be summarized as follows : 1. The converter CF(clarifier) dust of the Pohang 1st, 2nd steel making factory and EC(Evaporation Cooler), EP(Eltrostatic precititator) dust of the Kwangyang 2nd steel making factory are composed $\alpha$-Fe(21~50%), FeO(wustite)$Fe_3$$O_4$(magnetite), $Fe_2$$O_3$, CaO, $Al_2$$O_3$, $SiO_2$, and etc. 2. Pure iron has ductile characteristic in nature, particle size of the pure iron increase by increasing the grinding time. On the other hand, it is conformed that bo고 particles of hematite and magnetite become less than 325 mesh after 10 minutes grinding. 3. By applying the elutriation technique for the EC dust of the Kwangyang 2nd steel making factory, the iron powder of high content more than 99.17% of pure Fe was recovered with 37.8% yield at grinding time for 40 minutes. 4. By applying the elutriation technique for the CF dust of the Pohang 2nd steel making factory, the iron powder of high content more than 98.38% of pure Fe was recovered with 44.42% yield at grinding time for 40 minutes. 5. When magnetic separation was performed using plastic bonding magnet of 70 gauss, more than 98% Fe grade of iron powder was recovered in the size range +65 -200 mesh but the recovery of it was low.

  • This study attempted to investigate the metallurgical characteristic through material scientific analysis of hammer scale produced as a direct smelting method restoration experiment for each raw material of iron. To this end, four hammer scale groups were set up, respectively, by experimenting with Gyeongju-Gampo Iron sand and Yangyang Iron ore. For the analysis, principal component analysis, compound analysis, microstructure observation, and chemical composition were confirmed. As a result of principal component analysis, as forging and refining progressed, the content of Fe increased and the content of non-metallic objects decreased. As a result of compound analysis, iron oxide-based compounds were identified. As a result of confirming microstructure and chemical composition, Wüstite and Fayalite were observed overall, and agglomerated Wüstite were observed in some. Magnetite on shape of polygon and pillar was observed. In addition, it was confirmed that internal defects, impurities, and non-metallic interventions gradually decreased. In the future, it is necessary to investigate the metallurgical characteristic through material scientific analysis of hammer scale produced through restoration experiments using various raw material of iron, and compare them with those excavated from Iron manufacture ruins.

  • Sapphire fiber has been used to provide an optical path for the total radiation pyrometry. In measuring the temperature, we use the two-color detector, which consists of a high-performance Silicon detector mounted in a "sandwich" configuration over a Germanium detector. Sapphire fiber can withstand high temperature in the molten steel for two and a half hours. The maximum value of the error is the $\pm$2.5$^{\circ}C$ in the range of 152$0^{\circ}C$~1$600^{\circ}C$. This paper presents the simple scheme for measuring the molten steel temperature in the blast furnace of the iron & steel making process.g process.

  • The application field of porous mold is more and more expended. A mixture of alumina and cast iron is used for making porous mold using slip and vacuum casting method in this study. Slip casting is a process that slurry is poured into silicon rubber mold, dried in vacuum oven, debinded and sintered in furnace, In this procedure, slurry is composed of powder, binder, dispersion agent, and water. Vacuum casting is a technique for removing air bubbles existed in the slurry under vacuum condition. Since ceramics has a tendency of over-shrinkage after sintering, cast iron is used to compensate dimensional change. The results shows that sintering temperature has a great effect on characteristics of alumina-cast iron composite sintered parts. Finally ceramic-metal composite sintered mold can be used for aluminum alloy casting of shoe mold using this process.

  • Flux-switching permanent magnet machines (FSPMM) have doubly-salient and simple structures making it cost effective and suitable for mass production. In addition, it is possible to increase the rotor rotating speed and concentrate the flux of the permanent magnet on the air-gap. Due to these merits, the FSPMM can be applied to the various industry applications. To improve the performance, various design variables need to be studied in terms of design techniques. In this paper, we especially concentrate on the distribution of iron losses using a two-dimensional finite-element method (2D FEM). As a result, we can get an information for high efficiency FSPMM design.

  • The iron contents in the foodstuffs used for treatment of anemia as dietary treatments in Part Tang-Aik(湯液編) of Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam, (which was treatments of herb medicine. in Royal family) are studied on the purpose of comparing these Korean traditional and oriental herb medicine with modern nutrition and medicine, focusing especially upon the scientific values residing in them. The iron contents in grains, reptilla, feathered tribes, mammals, and fruits advised good for anemia in Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam are in average per 100g weight base, 8.6, 5.0, 6.5, 3.4, and 2.12 mg each respectively, while in thoes not advised good for anemia in the same part, the iron contents are 2.34, 2.63, 1.4, 2.21 and 0.97mg each respectively. To compare these two groups, in the foodstuffs advised good for anemia in Korean traditional herb medicine represented in Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam, the iron contents are much higher than in those not advised groups. However, in classes of vegetables and fishes, the iron contents are reversed. In conclusion, it is very difficult to say that all the dietary treatments advised in Korean traditional herb medicine are scientific in modern medical view point, however, it has some value doubtlessly to research Korean traditional herb medicine in modern aspect. Furthermore, in this study, Korean traditional medicine, arguing being built upon thousands years of experiences has been found .to have some scientific bases such as high iron contents in food stuffs advised good for anemia represented in Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam.

  • A spectrophotometric method for the determination of major impurities, such as iron and copper, in high purity of antimony with 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine) has been studied. The iron-oxinate is stable at the pH range 5.0 to 5.7, and the copper-oxinate at the pH range 3.5 to 4.0. To mask antimony in sulfuric acid solution of sample, author has investigated the effect of tartaric acid on antimony, and found that 10ml of 0.5M tartaric acid solution could mask up to 600mg of antimony. The absorbance of iron-oxinate was measured at 580$m{\mu}$ and iron could be determined, but it is necessary for copper-oxinate to measure at 410 and 580m respectively after removing heavy metals other than copper by back extraction with 15% solution of sodium hydroxide, and copper could be determined by making a correction for the amounts of iron present. Up to 150 ${\mu}g$ of iron (0.005-0.03%), and 100 ${\mu}g$ of copper (0.005-0.016%), in 500mg of antimony could be determined.
