The stereoselective synthesis of chiral terminal epoxide is of immense interest due to their utility as versatile starting materials as well as chiral intermediates. In this study, new chiral Co(salen) complexes bearing cobalt(II) chloride, iron(III) chloride and zinc(II) nitrate have been synthesized and characterized. The mass and EXAFS spectra provided the direct evidence of formation of complex. Their catalytic activity and selectivity have been demonstrated for the asymmetric ring opening of terminal epoxides such as styrene oxide and phenylglycidylether by hydrolytic kinetic resolution technology and for the synthesis of glycidyl buthylate. The easily prepared complexes exhibited very high enantioselectivity for the asymmetric ring opening of epoxides with $H_2O$ nucleophile, providing enantiomerically enriched terminal epoxides (>99% ee). The newly synthesized chiral salen showed remakablely enhanced reactivity with substantially low loadings. The system described in this work is very efficient for the sinthesis of chiral epoxide and 1,2-diol intermediates.

Although yttrium iron garnet (YIG) has provided a great vehicle for the study of spin waves in the past, associated difficulties in film deposition and device fabrication using YIG had limited the applicability of spin waves to practical devices. However, microfabrication techniques have made it possible to characterize both the resonant as well as the travelling characteristics of spin waves in permalloy (Py). A variety of methods have been used for measuring spin waves, including Brillouin light scattering (BLS), magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE), vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR), and pulse inductive microwave magnetometry (PIMM). PIMM is one of the most preferred methodologies of measuring travelling spin waves. In this method, an electrical impulse is applied at one of two coplanar waveguides patterned on top of oxide-insulated Py, producing a local disturbance in the magnetization of the Py. The resulting disturbance travels down the Py in the form of waves, and is inductively picked up by the other coplanar waveguide. We investigate the effect of the pulse width of excitation pulses on the generated spin wave packets using both experimental results and micromagnetic simulations. We show that spin wave packets generated from electrical pulses are a superposition of two separate spin wave packets, one generated from the rising edge and the other from the falling edge, which interfere either constructively or destructively with one another, depending upon the magnitude and direction of the field bias conditions. A method of spin wave amplitude modulation is also presented by the linear superposition of spin waves. We use interfering spin waves resulting from two closely spaced voltage impulses for the modulation of the magnitude of the resultant spin wave packets.

More than fifty copper veins are emplaced around late Cretaceous granitoid stock in Haman-Gunbuk district, southernmost part of Korea. These veins cut both late Cretaceous granitoids and hornfels of Jindong formation which is intruded by the granitoids. The paragenesis of veins is nearly the same, consisting of (1) an early vein stage in which most iron oxide minerals, tourmaline and other silitcate minerals were deposited, (2) a calcite and quartz with base·metal sulfide stage and (3) late vein lets of barren calcite stage. Fluid inclusion studies reveal highly systematic trends of salinity and temperature during mineralization. Ore fluids of early vein stage were complex NaCl-KCl rich brines. Salinities of polyphase inclusions in quartz and scapolite in thie stage reached up to 72 wt.% and gradually decreased to 10.5wt. % in closing stage. Homogenization temperatures of inclusions in the beginning of this stage were up to $490^{\circ}C$ and then declined steadly to $290^{\circ}C$ in the late stage. Salinities of fluid inclusions in quartz and calcite of base·metal sulfide stage were 37.4~5.7wt. % and homogenization temperatures range from $373^{\circ}C$ to $170^{\circ}C$. Intermittent boiling of early vein fluid is indicated by fluid inclusions in quartz. Potassic alteration of granodiorite adjacent to early vein seems to be related to early saline vein fluid. Fluid inclusion data of base-metal sulfide stage of this area reveal nearly the same range as those of Koseong copper mining district about 30km apart from this area.

Rebar corrosion in a simulated pore solution (SPS) with chloride ion was analyzed by Tafel and AC impedance method and corrosion effects of surface roughness and iron oxide layer were also investigated. Corrosion estimation of rebar by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is very useful, and the measured value can be adapted to proposed electrochemical equivalent circuit model. Corrosion potential increased to the cathodic direction as the concentration of chloride ions increased and corrosion current had the same tendency as above. Surface films were analyzed with scanning electron microscope and Auger electron spectroscopy. Thermally oxidized layer by torch flame for 15 sec was very poor at anti-corrosive property. The corrosion rate of rebar increased as the surface roughness increased. Also, higher temperatures above RT of SPS in initial stage caused a rebar to be corroded faster.

It has been carried our for establishing the methodology to upgrade $TiO_2$ by carbothermal reduction of iron oxide in ilmenite. Based on present experimental results, the possibility for substitution with rutile has been investigated. It could by proposed that the 2 wt.% $FeCl_3$ of sample and carbon of 2 equivalents are optimum conditions as a feeding materials. And also appropriate reducing temperature and reduction time were about $1100^{\circ}C$ and 30 minutes. The product obtained by the processes of carbon reduction and magnetic separation may be used the substitute mineral of rutile.

Samples of pure Mg, 76.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni, and 71.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni-5 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ were prepared by reactive mechanical grinding and their hydriding and dehydriding properties were then investigated. The reactive mechanical grinding of Mg with Ni is considered to facilitate nucleation and to shorten diffusion distances of hydrogen atoms. After hydriding-dehydriding cycling, the 76.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni and 71.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni-5 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ samples contained $Mg_2Ni$ phase. In addition to the effects of the creation of defects and the decrease in particle size, the addition of Ni increases the hydriding and dehydriding rates by the formation of $Mg_2Ni$. Expansion and contraction of the hydride-forming materials (Mg and $Mg_2Ni$) with the hydriding and dehydriding reactions are also considered to increase the hydriding and dehydriding rates of the mixture by forming defects and cracks leading to the fragmentation of particles. The reactive mechanical grinding of Mg-Ni alloy with $Fe_2O_3$ is considered to decrease the particle size.
The ballasted flocculation effects of the mill scale and magnetite on activated sludge were investigated. Both ballasted flocculants (BF) could remarkably improve the sludge settleability in terms of zone settling velocity (ZSV) and sludge volume index (SVI). With the BF dosage of 0.2 to 2.0 g-BF/g-SS, the magnetite particles showed better efficiency on improving settling behavior of activated sludge than the mill scale due to higher surface area and hydrophobic property. The efficiency of SVI30 with magnetite injection was 2.5 to 11.3% higher than mill scale injection and that of the ZSV appreciated from 23.7% to 44.4% for magnetite injection. Averaged floc size of the BF sludge with magnetite dosage (0.5 g-BF/g-SS) was 2.3 times higher than that of the control sludge. Dewaterability of the sludge was also greatly improved by addition of the BF. The specific resistance to filtration (SRF) was reduced exponentially with increasing the dosage of BF. However, the BF's particle size effect on the SRF looks to be marginal. Consequently, for improving the dewaterability, the BF played a physical role to remove the pore water of the biological flocs by intrusive attachment and a chemical role to induce aggregation of the flocs by charge neutralization.

Protaetia brevitarsis (PB) extracts has been traditionally used as medicinal stuff to treat blood stasis, occlusion of menstruation, tetanus and liver cancer in Asian countries (Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, India and Myanmar). Especially, Donguibogam, which is traditional korean medicinal book, described the PB extracts as traditional medicine to treat hepatic diseases and vascular disorders. The PB extracts has been considered as highly nutritional food. The major constituents of PB extracts are rich in protein, healthy fats, iron, calcium. Recent studies announced that PB extracts has hepatoprotective effect and anti-microbacterial effect. However, the effect of PB on ulcerative colitis has not been uncovered yet. The aim of this study was to examine the anti-inflammatory effect of PB extracts in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice model. Cytotoxicity of PB was determined by MTT assay and the antiinflammatory effect of PB extract was investigated by measuring nitric oxide (NO) production. PB extracts did not show any cytotoxicity. AIso, PB extracts supressed NO production in LPS-stimulated mice peritoneal macrophages. To determine whether PB could be an effective treatment on ulcerative colitis, DSS was administered in BALB/c mice for 10 days. PB extract significantly improved the clinical signs of DSS-induced UC, including body weight loss, colon length shortening, and disease activity index increase, with histological markers of colon injury. These findings indicated the possibility of PB as a therapeutic agent on ulcerative colitis.
Hierarchically porous $Fe_2O_3$ nanofibers with meso- and macro- pores are designed and synthesized by electrospinning and subsequent heat-treatment. The macro pores are generated by selectively decomposition of polystyrene as a dispersed phase in the as-spun fibers containing $Fe(acac)_3$/polyacrylonitrile continuous phases during heat-treatment. Additionally, meso-pores formed by evaporation of infiltrated water vapor during electrospinning process interconnected the macro-pores and results in the formation of hierarchically porous $Fe_2O_3$ nanofibers. The initial discharge capacity and Coulombic efficiency of the hierarchically porous $Fe_2O_3$ nanofibers at a current density of $1.0A\;g^{-1}$ are $1190mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ and 79.2%. Additionally, the discharge capacity of the nanofibers is $792mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ after 1,000 cycles. The high structural stability and morphological benefits of the hierarchically porous $Fe_2O_3$ nanofibers resulted in superior lithium ion storage performance.
