Pulverized coal injection system development to raise combustion efficiencies of a blast furnace (고로의 연소효율을 높이기 위한 미분탄 공급 시스템 개발)

  • Pulverized coal (PC) has become an important auxiliary fuel in the iron and steel industry since the technique of pulverized coal injection (PCI) system was developed for iron making. Combustion efficiencies of pulverized coal in blowpipes and tuyeres under various operational are numerically predicted to recognize the performance with the locations of nozzles in a blast furnace. A variety of parameters including the pulverized coal quantities, oxygen amounts, inlet temperature of the tuyeres and mass flow rate of coal carrier gas are taken into consideration. Also In order to develop more efficient than existing coal injection system, this study applies a flame measurement system using a charge couple device (CCD) camera and frame grabber. And it has used algorithms of auto sampling from flame shape information and composed the device for location control of PCI. This study find to further improve the blast furnace performance by the control of PCI locations.

  • In this study, the power basic units to produce cast iron by using the press and shredded scrap are compared in 16t/h low-frequency induction melting furnace. Charging the shredded scrap instead of the press scrap was confirmed that the power basic unit is improved by about 5%. The energy characteristics according to the shape and size of scrap steel and the effect of the furnace size were investigated. Finally, the strategy to improve the utilization of this technology was proposed.

  • Silica bricks had been in arc-furnace roofs of various sizes and steelmaking practices. The resulting materials were examined with reference to mineral and chemical changes. Silica bricks develope definite zones while in service. These zones represent a concentration gradient through the brick that results from the thermal gradient across the brick and from the furnace atmosphere. There are major brick losses by spalling as well as by melting of the hot-face surface in an iron-oxide rich liquid.

  • Reclaimer in the raw material yard is being used to dig iron and coal so that they transfer to main blast furnace. A newly automatic system was developed and tested in the raw yard of Kwangyang iron making. The concept of the proposed system is based on the 3-dimensional detection of pile and auto-landing on the surface it.

  • With blast-furnace slag is a by-product generated when pig iron is produced. It has been used as the concrete admixture due to high reactivity. However, It causes low strength development during early age. In order to make up for this drawback, in this study, we evaluated compressive strength of mortar replaced with high volume blast-furnace slag. Experimental results, Compressive strength of mortar based on blast-furnace slag is affected by cement type, substitution rate of blast-furnace slag and pH after mixing.

  • Electric arc furnace oxidizing slag from massively produced steel slag has been used in road bases and subbases, hot mix asphalt, and landfill. Electric arc furnace oxidizing slag contains iron (15%~30%) and has a high density of 3.0~3.7 ton/m3. Depending on the type and amount of concrete aggregates, the radiation-shielding characteristics can vary. Therefore, aggregates of electric arc furnace oxidizing slag can be considered for the production of radiation-shielding concrete. The experimental design of this study is experiments on Compressive strength experiments, X-ray irradiation experiments, and experiments related to the unit volume weight were carried out on hardened concrete. This experiment compared the performance evaluation of radiation shielding of concrete using electric arc furnace oxidizing slag.

An Estimation of Plant Specific Emission Factors for CO2 in Iron and Steel Industry (철강 산업의 산업공정부문 CO2 실측 배출계수 산정에 관한 연구)

  • The development of domestic plant specific emission factors is very important to estimate reliable national emissions management. This study, for the reason, was carried out to obtain advances emission factor for Carbon Dioxide ($CO_2$) by source-specific emission tests from the iron and steel industry sector which is well known as one of the major sources of greenhouse gases ($CO_2$). Emission factors estimated in this study were compared with those of IPCC for evaluation and they were found to be of similar level in the case of $CO_2$. There was no good information available on $CO_2$ plant specific emission factors from the iron and steel industry in Korea so far. The major emission sources of $CO_2$ examined from the iron and steel manufacturing precesses were a hot blast stove, coke oven, sintering furnace, electric arc furnace, heating furnace, and so on. In this study, the concentration of $CO_2$ from the hot blast stove process was the highest among all processes. The $CO_2$ emission factors for a ton of Steel and Iron products (using B-C oil) were estimated to be 0.315 $CO_2$ tonne (by Tier 3 method) and 4.89 $CO_2$ tonne. In addition, emission factor of $CO_2$ for heating furnace process was the highest among all process. Emission factors estimated in this study were compared with those of IPCC for evaluation and they were found to be of similar level in the case of $CO_2$.

  • Up to date, the life extension of industrial plant structures has been strongly required in the field of iron-manufacturing company, atomic or power generation company and so on. Fault monitoring, maintenance of aging structural components, safety assessment and residual life prediction may be recognized as typical and/or practical methods in terms of life extension methods. Based on the construction of damage scenario, precise analysis method and development of the risk or reliability assessment, a number of studies have been carried out in this viewpoint. In conjunction with the finite element analysis technique, a practical procedure for the safety assessment of iron-manufacturing plant structures was developed in this paper with a particular interest in furnace. By virtue of the detailed finite element analyses for blust furnace under an operational condition, the validity of the proposed procedure for safety assessment was presented.

Scientific Analysis of Iron Making By-Products Excavated from Gogi-ri, Namwon, Korea

  • This study analyzes six slags excavated from the iron making site in Gogi-ri, Namwon, Korea to understand the characteristics of the ruins, and to confirm the iron making process performed at the time. The chemical components of the iron making by-products from the Gogi-ri site were analyzed, and the findings indicate total Fe contents between 23.24% and 37.56%, which are lower than the typical total Fe content found in ancient iron making processes. The deoxidation agent contents of the slags ranged from 43.88% to 58.13%, which are higher than the typical deoxidation agent content of ancient iron making processes. The high content suggests smooth separation between iron and slags, and TiO2 detected from the site suggests the use of materials with high titanium content in the iron making in the region. As for the microstructures of the slags, some slags have long pillar-shaped fayalites, while others have pillar-shaped wüstite along with ulvöspinel. Slags from the forging furnace show hammer scales created by both the earlier stages and later stages of forging work. The findings suggest that the iron making site in Gogi-ri, Namwon, Korea used to be an iron making facility where a full range of iron making process was carried out ranging from smelting to forging, and the ironmakers used a wide array of technologies to manufacture iron products.

  • A complete spectrum of risk assessment including qualitative and quantitative approaches were performed for the POSCO's Batch Annealing Furnace (BAF) gas systems. The purpose of BAF is to enhance the quality of steel by annealing it with either hydrogen/nitrogen mixture gas or pure hydrogen gas. Number of gas leak scenarios were identified to generate frequency of their occurrences. With the hypothetical accident scenarios given, fire/explosion impact studies were performed to estimate magnitude of significant consequences. Several different indices were also presented from which practical safety improvement action items could be established.
