Epoxidation of olefins catalyzed by iron-tetraarylporphyrins were studied to see the shape selectivity in the competing reaction between cis-and trans- or internal and external olefins. Cis-olefins were more reactive than trans-olefins in the competing reaction between cis-and trans-olefins. Interestingly, in the epoxidation of $cis-{\beta}-methystyrene$ by ${\alpha}{\beta}{\alpha}{\beta}$ atropisomer of Fe(III)TNPPPCl and iodosylbenzene, 27% of total product was phenylacetone. The unusually large amount of phenylacetone may be produced by hydride rearrangement of carbocationic intermediate. Regioselectivity of the reaction was also studied by using the most sterically hindered Fe(III)TTPPPCl. In the epoxidation of limonene with Fe(III)TTPPPCl, the disubstituted double bond was more reactive than trisubstituted double bond. This is in contrast to the results obtained with other iron-tetraarylporphyrins. Similar trend was also observed in the competing reaction between mono-and di-substituted olefins.

High purity hydrogen, 97-99 vol.%, with CO at just ppm levels was obtained in a fixed bed of iron oxide employing the steam-iron cycle operation with reduction at 823K and oxidation in a steam-$N_2$ mixture at 773K TGA experiments indicated that temperature of the reduction step as well as its duration are important for preventing carbon build-up in iron and the intrusion of $CO_2$ into the hydrogen product. At a reduction temperature of 823K, oxide reduction by $H_2$ was considerably faster than reduction by CO. If the length of the reduction step exceeds optimal value, low levels of methane gas appeared in the off-gas. Furthermore, with longer durations of the reduction step and CO levels in the reducing gas greater than 10 vol.%, carbidization of the iron and/or carbon deposition in the bed exhibited the increasing pressure drop over the bed, eventually rendering the reactor inoperable. Reduction using a reducing gas containing 10 vol.% CO and a optimal reduction duration gave constant $H_2$ flow rates and off-gas composition over 10 redox reaction cycles.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate basic physical prorerties of color mortar using an industrial by-product called iron sulphate. First as the characteristic of fresh mortar, addition of iron sulphate reduced flow, air content and unit volume weight. Compressive strength was increased the most at substitution of 6% iron sulphate.
The dechlorination of chlorinated methanes by iron powder and palladium coated iron (Pd/Fe) was studied in batch experiments. Iron powder dechlorinated carbon tetrachloride (CT) with a half-life of 4 days. Three chloromethane was found as major product and less chlorinated daughters. Mass balance found was to be about 93-99%. Pd/Fe showed very enhanced reactivity for CT in comparing with plain iron. The major dechlorination products of CT were also less chlorinated methanes with Pd/Fe. Pd/Fe also degrade the produced less chlorinated compounds. Sequential reactions were occurred on Pd/Fe. As the Pd/Fe content increased, the reaction rate was increased linearly.

Multigram-scale product exclusively containing magnetic carbon nanoparticles (MNCPs) with uniform size was successfully fabricated without a specific separation process. The iron-doped PPy nanoparticles were synthesized by micelle templating and used as the carbon precursor in order to generate MCNPs. The magnetic carbon nanoparticles possessed a microporous structure and exhibited ferromagnetic properties at room temperature. This approach may be an effective alternative to generate magnetic carbon nanoparticles against the conventional arc-discharge technique.
Fluorspar has been essential flux in steelmaking process. The main effects of fluorspar addition are lowering of the viscosity and melting temperature of slag. In recent years, due to the increasing price and environmental problem of fluorspar, various types of fluorspar substitute have been investigated. In this study, iron oxide by-products such as sinter dust, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) sludge and mill scale were developed as a substitute in terms of waste recycling. Several plant trials were carried out by addition of briquetted substitutes of $4{\sim}6$ kg/ton to compare with the fluorspar of $0.7{\sim}1$ kg/ton. The substitutes showed a similar behavior of slag formation, phosphorus removal and MgO saturation content.

In this study, iron oxide (FeOx) nanoparticles were synthesized using iron (Fe) by-products recovered from NdFeB permanent magnet scraps, and the effect of heat-treatment temperature on the physical properties of the FeOx nanoparticles was investigated. In order to prepare the FeOx nanoparticles, 2.0 M ammonia (NH4OH) solution was added to an iron by-product solution diluted to c.a. 10 wt% in D.I. water, which led to the precipitation of the iron oxide precursor. Then, the FeOx nanoparticles were synthesized by heat-treatment at 300 ℃, 400 ℃, 500 ℃ and 600 ℃. After that, the physical properties of the FeOx nanoparticles were investigated in order to understand the effect of the heat-treatment temperature. The results of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the diffraction peak in accordance with the <104> direction increased as the heat-treatment increased, and a diffraction peak indicating the α-Fe2O3 crystal structure was detected at heat-treatment temperatures above 500 ℃. The BET specific surface area analysis revealed that the specific surface area decreased as the heat-treatment temperature increased to above 400 ℃. Observation with a high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) showed that rod-shaped nanoparticles were formed, and the size of the nanoparticles showed a tendency to increase as the heat-treatment temperature increased.

Greenhouse gas emissions have a profound effect on global warming. Various environmental regulations have been introduced to reduce the emissions. The largest amount of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, is produced in the steel industry. To decrease carbon dioxide emission, hydrogen-based iron oxide reduction, which can replace carbon-based reduction has received a great attention. Iron production generates various by-product gases, such as cokes oven gas (COG), blast furnace gas (BFG), and Linz-Donawitz gas (LDG). In particular, COG, due to its high concentrations of hydrogen and methane, can be reformed to become a major source of hydrogen for reducing iron oxide. Nevertheless, continuous COG cannot be supplied under actual operation condition of steel industry. To solve this problem, this study proposed to use two alternative COG-based fuel mixtures; one with natural gas and the other with biogas. Reforming study on two types of mixed gas were carried out to evaluate catalyst performance under a variety of operating conditions. In addition, methane conversion and product composition were investigated both theoretically and experimentally.
In this study, the reductive dechlorination of triclosan using zero-valent iron (ZVI, $Fe^0$) and modified zero-valent iron (i.e., acid-washed iron (Aw/Fe) and palladium-coated iron (Pd/Fe)) was experimentally investigated, and the reduction characteristics were evaluated by analyzing the reaction kinetics. Triclosan could be reductively decomposed using zero-valent iron. The degradation rates of triclosan were about 50% and 67% when $Fe^0$ and Aw/Fe were used as reductants, respectively, after 8 h of reaction. For the Pd/Fe system, the degradation rate was about 57% after 1 h of reaction. Thus, Pd/Fe exhibited remarkable performance in the reductive degradation of triclosan. Several dechlorinated intermediates were predicted by GC-MS spectrum, and 2-phenoxyphenol was detected as the by-product of the decomposition reaction of triclosan, indicating that reductive dechlorination occurred continuously. As the reaction proceeded, the pH of the solution increased steadily; the pH increase for the Pd/Fe system was smaller than that for the $Fe^0$ and Aw/Fe system. Further, zero-order, first-order, and second-order kinetic models were used to analyze the reaction kinetics. The first-order kinetic model was found to be the best with good correlation for the $Fe^0$ and Aw/Fe system. However, for the Pd/Fe system, the experimental data were evaluated to be well fitted to the second-order kinetic model. The reaction rate constants (k) were in the order of Pd/Fe > Aw/Fe > $Fe^0$, with the rate constant of Pd/Fe being much higher than that of the other two reductants.
To investigate inclusions(oxides) which cause some trouble in the quality of the metal and a steel-making process, samples were manufactured. The molten irons were deoxidized using Al deoxidizer, and the morphology of the deoxidation products and the process of deoxidation were investigated by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDS). The reactions between Fe melt and Al deoxidizer formed deoxidation product, and those reaction may accelerates the reduction of oxide in Fe melt. According to the results of SEM analysis after deoxidizing treatment, it was found that deoxidation products had spherical cluster shape when 1% Al was added and dendritic shape with $2{\sim}3%$ A1 addition. The deoxidation products were globular, dendritic, polygonal(square) and cluster shape.
