The Yonghwa gold-silver deposits are emplaced along $N15^{\circ}{\sim}25^{\circ}W$ trending fissures in middle Cretaceous porphyritic granite or Precambrian Sobaegsan gneiss complex. The results of paragenetic studies suggest that vein filling can be subdivided into four identifiable stages; state I: the main sulfide stage, characterized by base-metal sulfide minerals, iron oxides and minor electrum, stage II: electrum stage, stage III: electrum and silver-bearing sulfosalts stage, stage IV: post ore stage of carbonates and quartz. The ore mineralogy suggests that depositional temperature of the formation of the gold and silver minerals are estimated as 200 to $250^{\circ}C$ and 140 to $180^{\circ}C$, respectively. Sulfur fugacity of the formation of the gold and silver minerals are estimated as $10^{-14.0}$ to $10^{-12.2}$ atm and $10^{-18.5}$ to $10^{-17.2}$ atm, respectively. A consideration of the pressure regime during ore deposition bases on the fluid inclusion evidence of boiling suggests lithostatic pressure of less than 180 bars. This range of pressure indicate that vein system lay at depth of 700m below the surface at the time during mineralization. Salinities of ore-bearing fluids range from 0.4 to 6.9 wt.% equivalent NaCl. The sulfur and carbon isotopic data reveal that these elements were probably derived from a deep-seated source. The ${\delta}^{18}O$ of the hydrothermal fluid was determined from ${\delta}^{18}O$ values of quartz and calcite. Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic studies reveal that meteoric water dominate over ore-bearing fluid.

We have reported previously that a recombinant Escherichia coli co-expresses aminolevulinic acid (ALA) synthase, an NADP-dependent malic enzyme, and a dicarboxylate transporter-produced heme, an iron-chelated porphyrin, in a succinate-containing complex medium. To develop an industrially plausible process, a chemically defined medium was formulated based on M9 minimal medium. Heme synthesis was enhanced by adding sodium bicarbonate, which strengthened the C4 metabolism required for the precursor metabolite, although a pH change discouraged cell growth. Increasing the medium pH buffering capacity (100mM phosphate buffer) and adding sodium bicarbonate enabled the recombinant E. coli to produce heme at rates 60% greater than those in M9 minimal medium. Adding growth factors (1 mg/l thiamin, 0.01 mg/l biotin, 5 mg/l nicotinic acid, 1 mg/l pantothenic acid, and 1.4 mg/l cobalamin) also induced positive heme production effects at levels twice of heme production in M9-based medium. Porphyrin derivatives and heme were found in the chemically defined medium, and their presence was confirmed by liquid chromatography/mass spectroscopy (LC/MS). The formulated medium allowed for the production of $0.6{\mu}M$ heme, $29{\mu}M$ ALA, $0.07{\mu}M$ coproporphyrin I, $0.21{\mu}M$ coproporphyrin III, and $0.23{\mu}M$ uroporphyrin in a 3 L pH-controlled culture.

In the United States (U.S.), the monitored natural attenuation (MNA) approach has been used as an alternative remedial option for organic and inorganic compounds retained in soil and dissolved in groundwater. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines the MNA as“in-situ naturally-occurring processes include biodegradation, diffusion, dilution, sorption, volatilization, and/or chemical and biochemical stabilization of contaminants and reduce contaminant toxicity, mobility or volume to the levels that are protective of human health and the environment”. The Department of Soil Environment. National Institute Environmental Research (NIER) is in the process for demonstrating the MNA approach as a potential remedial option for the BTEX contaminated site in Uiwang City. The project is charactering the research site in terms of the nature and extend of contamination, biological degradation rate, and geochemical and hydrological properties. The microbial-degradation rate and effectiveness of nutrient and redox supplements will be determined through laboratory batch and column tests. The geochemical process will be monitored for determining the concentration changes of chemical species involved in the electron transfer processes that include methanogenesis, sulfate and iron reduction, denitrification, and aerobic respiration. Through field works, critical soil and hydrogeologic parameters will be acquired to simulate the effects of dispersion, advection, sorption, and biodegradation on the fate and transport of the dissolved-phase BTEX plume using Bioplume III model. The objectives of this multi-years research project are (1) to evaluate the MNA approach using the BTEX contaminated site in Uiwang City, (2) to establish a standard protocol for future application of the approach, (3) to investigate applicability of the passive approach as a secondary treatment remedy after active treatments. In this presentation, the overall picture and philosophy behind the MNA approach will be reviewed. Detailed discussions of the site characterization/monitoring plans and risk-based decision-making processes for the demonstration site will be included.

Tricyclopentadiene (TCPD) is one of the important precursors for making tetrahydrotricyclopentadiene, which is well known as a next-generation fuel with high energy density. In this study, TCPD was obtained by polymerization reaction of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) using an ionic liquid (IL) supported mesoporous silica catalysts. ILs were supported to two kinds of mesoporous silica catalysts with different pore sizes such as MCM-41 and SBA-15. Four different ILs were supported to mesoporous silicas using anionic precursors such as CuCl or $FeCl_3$ and cationic precursors such as triethylamine hydrochloride or 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride. We proved that IL supported mesoporous silicas showed better catalytic performance than those of using non-supported prestine IL in the aspect of TCPD yield and DCPD conversion. Among four kinds of IL supported mesoporous silica catalysts, CuCl-based IL supported MCM-41 system showed the highest TCPD yield.
Thin films of two kinds of Prussian Blue (PB)-modified, using iron(Ⅲ) complex instead of conventional FeCl3, were prepared on a gold substrate and these films were able to be electrochemically reduced in potassium nitrate solution. In case of PB-modified films prepared from Fe(Ⅲ)-ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetic acid (FeEN3+)/K3Fe(CN)6 solution, the mid-peak potential was 0.156 V in 0.1 M KNO3 and it was found that potassium ion migrates into or out of the film during the electrolysis. These films were shown to be electrochromic. These films exhibited smaller peak separation than those formed from Fe(Ⅲ)-tartaric acid (FeTA3+)/K3Fe(CN)6 system. The diffusion coefficient of Fe(CN)63-/4- redox couple, evaluated using the fabricated Au rotating disc electrode(rde) previously reported, was in good agreement with the existing data. Two experimental procedures, including the voltammetry at relatively low scan rates and the rde study, have been used in order to characterize the electrode kinetics. The electrode kinetics of some redox couples (FeEN2+-FeEN3+ and FeTA2+-FeTA3+) on both PB-modified thin films and bare Au electrode were studied using a Au rde. In all cases the rate constants of electron transfer obtained with the PB-modified film electrodes were only slightly less than those obtained for the same reaction on bare Au disc electrodes. The conductivities, as determined from the slopes of the i-V curves for a ca. 1 mm sample for dried PB-modified potassium-rich and deficient bulk samples pressed between graphite electrodes, were 6.21 × 10-7 and 2.03 × 10-7(Ω·cm)-1, respectively.

Background: Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune enteropathy. It results from genetic predisposition and exposure to gluten-containing food. The prevalence and presentation of CD vary among populations. Purpose: This study aimed to describe the prevalence and clinical characteristics of CD in children in Bahrain. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of children diagnosed with CD in the pediatric department, Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain, in 1988-2018. Their clinical, biochemical, serological, and histopathological findings were documented. Adherence to the recommended gluten-free diet (GFD) was assessed. Results: Of 86 patients with CD, 67 were included. The CD prevalence was 0.02%. A significant increase in prevalence in the last decade was observed (P<0.0001). Thirty-eight patients (56.7%) were males. The median (interquartile range) age at presentation was 4.45 (1.5-7.3) years. A family history of CD was positive in 13 out of 43 patients (30.2%). Pallor and failure to thrive were the most common presentations. The most frequent associated disease was iron-deficiency anemia in 23 patients (69.7%). Positive serology was found in 32 of 45 patients (71.1%). Marsh-Oberhuber type III was found in 16 of 35 patients (45.7%). Seropositive patients were significantly older (P=0.025) and had more severe duodenal histology (P=0.002). Adherence to GFD was poor in 27 patients (64.3%). Conclusion: This study revealed a significant increase in CD prevalence over the last decade. Atypical presentations were frequent. Most patients had poor adherence to GFD.
Square-shaped moated burial precincts(方形周溝墓) can be classified into type I that has bridges only at the comers, type II that has bridges at the comers and sides, type III that has bridges only at the sides, type IV that is surrounded by the moat without bridges, type V that has its sides less than those of type I ~ V by 1 or 2, and type VI that has the round-shaped ground. But the time differences among the types are not known yet. For the burial appliances of square-shaped moated burial precincts, there are stone coffins, pit burials and jar burials. The major burial appliances situated in the mound are stone coffins and pit burials, and jar burials are subsidiary appliances that were buried at the shoulder part of the mound or at precincts. According to the case of Gwanchang-ri KM423, grave mounds, which arc closely related with the burial appliances, were built by heaping up the earth in and around the precinct as low as only enough to protect the burial appliances. Considering the relics unearthed in the burial compartment of KM437, the time when square-shaped moated burial precincts were formed is estimated to be the age when Songguk-ri type earthenware and clay stripes earthenware co-existed. It was the early Iron Age when ironware began to sp read in this country. Emerging first in that age, square-shaped moated burial precincts were presumably formed until around the end of BC or the beginning of AD, when KM404 and KM423, which were unearthed with plain earthenware, grey earthenware and ironware, were formed. When analyzing the form of small-sized graveyards in precincts, the unearthed relics and the locations, the people who formed square-shaped moated burial precincts were considered as those who had a culture comprising clay stripes earthenware, which appears newly in the Songguk-ri type earthenware of native, and ironware, and a settled agricultural society based on paddy fields and labor forces of family units.
Excessive presence of As level in groundwater is a major health problem worldwide. In the Red River Delta in Vietnam, several million residents possess a high risk of chronic As poisoning. The As releases into groundwater caused by natural process through microbially-driven reductive dissolution of Fe (III) oxides. It has been extracted by Red River residents using private tube wells for drinking and daily purposes because of their unawareness of the contamination. This long-term consumption of As-contaminated groundwater could lead to various health problems. Therefore, a predictive model would be useful to expose contamination risks of the wells in the Red River Delta Vietnam area. This study used four machine learning algorithms to predict the As probability of study sites in Red River Delta, Vietnam. The GBM was the best performing model with the accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity of 98.7%, 100%, 95.2%, and 100%, respectively. In addition, it resulted the highest AUC of 92% and 96% for the PRC and ROC curves, with Eh and Fe as the most important variables. The partial dependence plot of As concentration on the model parameters showed that the probability of high level of As is related to the low number of wells' depth, Eh, and SO4, along with high PO43- and NH4+. This condition triggers the reductive dissolution of iron phases, thus releasing As into groundwater.
Inorganic acids such as HCl, HNO3, and H2SO4 have been commonly applied to soil washing of heavy metals-contaminated soil due to their cost-effectiveness. However, implementing the 'Chemical Substance Control Act' requires off-site risk assessment of the chemicals used in the soil washing. Therefore, in this study, organic acids or Fe(III)-based washing agents were evaluated to replace commonly used inorganic acids. Ferric removed heavy metals via H+ generated by hydrolysis, which is similar to the HCl used in the control group. Oxalic acid and citric acid were effective to remove Cu, Zn, and Cd from soil. Organic acids could not remove Pb because they could form Pb-organic acid complexes with low solubility. Furthermore, Pb could be adsorbed onto the iron-organic acid complex on the soil surface. Ferric could remove exchangeable-carbonate, Fe-Mn hydroxide, and organic matter and sulfides bound heavy metals (F1, F2, and F3). Organic acids could remove the exchangeable-carbonate and Fe-Mn hydroxide bound metals (F1&F2). Therefore, this research shows that the fractionation of heavy metals in the soil and the properties of washing agents should be considered in the selection of agents in the process design.

In this study, Iron (III) oxide-hydroxide (δ-FeOOH) was successfully synthesized using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an oxidizing agent. The synthesis of δ-FeOOH was carried out by controlling the amount of H2O2, and pure δ-FeOOH was successfully synthesized in ranges from 0.2 mL to 0.6 mL of H2O2. The size of the synthesized δ-FeOOH particles was compared by controlling the amount of oxidant H2O2. The average particle size of the synthesized pure δ-FeOOH particles increased from 875.1 nm to 897.2 nm as the amount of H2O2 was increased. The optical properties of δ-FeOOH synthesized under these specific conditions were investigated. All δ-FeOOH showed a similar trend of increasing and decreasing light absorption from 800 nm to 400 nm, although there was a slight difference in the amount of light absorption, with the largest amount of light absorption at 410 nm. The band gap energy of δ-FeOOH through the Tauc plot method was about 2.1~2.2 eV when H2O2 was 0.2~1.4mL. With a sufficient small particle size, simple control of that particle size, and a small band gap energy enough to absorb light in the visible spectrum, δ-FeOOH could be useful in a variety of applications, including photoelectrochemistry and battery electrodes.
