  • Co-ferrite nanoparticles have been synthesized by the decomposition of iron(III) acetylacetonate, $Fe(acac)_3$ and Co acetylacetonate, $Co(acac)_2$ in benzyl/phenyl ether in the presence of oleic acid and oleyl amine at the refluxing temperature of $295^{\circ}C$/$265^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. before cooling to room temperature. Particle diameter detected by PSA can be turned from 4 nm to 20 nm by seed-mediated growth and reaction conditions. Structural and magnetic characterization of Co-ferrite were measured by use of HRTEM, SAED (selected area electron diffraction), XRD and SQUID. The as-synthesized Co-ferrite nanoparticles have a cubic spinel structure and coercivity of 20 nm $CoFe_{2}O_{4} nanoparticles reached 1 kOe at room temperature and 18 kOe at 10 K.

  • This paper details the synthesis of α-FeOOH (goethite) rods through the reaction of iron (III) nitrate with KOH as a strong base, and shape control of the particles for use as a yellow inorganic pigment. The crystal phase of the α-FeOOH crystal with OH content according to the addition of KOH and the change in morphology were investigated. The optical properties varied with the aspect ratios, and the yellowness increased with increasing aspect ratio. However, the enhanced chromaticity characteristics reversed beyond a certain critical aspect ratio. Thus, the relative optimal aspect ratio of the α-FeOOH rods as a vivid yellow inorganic pigment was derived. The morphology and coloration of the prepared rods were investigated in detail using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, and CIE Lab color parameter measurements.

  • Change in light transmission characteristics caused by various types of oil contaminations was experimentally measured with a built-in type wear monitoring device. Three kinds of iron powders of different size distribution, carbon dust, two kinds of solutions and grease were used for the lest contaminants in this work. Light intensity of the transmitted light was treasured with the contamination level. Results showed that the transmitted light intensity decreased linearly with the contamination concentration in the oil and the slope was affected by the size distribution. Light attenuation was also caused greatly by carbon dust, water contamination and polymeric fibers mainly due to the light absorption. As a result, it was proved that the optical measurement device could be applicable effectively for detecting any significant change iii lubricating oils.

  • Anaerobic oxidation of D-penicillamine by Fe(III) in acidic solution has been studied kinetically by the use of stopped-flow system. The reaction is biphasic with a rapid complexation of 1: 1 complex, $Fepen^+$ (pen= D-penicillamine dianion) which is then internally reduced to Fe(II) and disulfide. Rates of both the complexation and the redox process are pH dependent and also are affected by the presence of chloride ion. Different from the reaction of Cu(II) with D-penicillamine, partially oxidized mixed-valence complex is not formed even transiently in this reaction.

  • $Mo/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3catalysts$ modified with Fe, Co, and Ni were prepared by impregnation method and catalytic activity for water gas shift reaction was examined. The optimum amount of Mo loaded for the reaction was 10 wt% $MoO_3$ to ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3.$ The catalytic activity of $MoO_3/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3was$ increased by modifying with Fe, Co, and Ni in the order of Co${\thickapprox}$ Ni > Fe. The optimum amounts of Co and Ni added were 3 wt% based on CoO and NiO to 10 wt% $MoO_3/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, restectively. The TPR (temperature-programmed reduction) analysis revealed that the addition of Co and Ni enganced the reducibility of the catalysts. The results of both catalytic activity and TPR experiments strongly suggest that the redox property of the catalyst is an important factor in water gas shift reaction on the sulfided Mo catalysts, which could be an evidence of oxy-sulfide redox mechanism.

  • In general after the etching process, waste etching solution contains metals. (ex. Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr), Zinc (Zn), etc.) In this work, we proposed a recycling process for waste etching solution and refining from waste liquid contained nickel to make nickel metal nano powder. At first, the neutralization agent was experimentally selected through the hydrolysis of impurities such as iron by adjusting the pH. We selected sodium hydroxide solution as a neutralizing agent, and removed impurities such as iron by pH = 4. And then, metal ions (ex. Manganese (Mn) and Zinc (Zn), etc.) remain as impurities were refined by D2EHPA (Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid). The nickel powders were synthesized by liquid phase reduction method with hydrazine ($N_2H_4$) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The resulting nickel chloride solution and nickel metal powder has high purity ( > 99%). The purity of nickel chloride solution and nickel nano powders were measured by EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic) titration method with ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer). FE-SEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy) was used to investigate the morphology, particle size and crystal structure of the nickel metal nano powder. The structural properties of the nickel nano powder were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy).

  • In this study, hydrogen peroxide is stabilized in modified Fenton reaction to improve the soil remediation. Phenanthrene, which is the typical compound in PAHs, was spiked into soil samples to copy the original contaminated site. Anionic surfactant, SDS (Sodium dodecyl sulfate) was used for hydrogen peroxide stabilizer. 4 mM of Fe(II), 5~50 mM of SDS and 102.897 mM of $H_2O_2$ was injected into soil samples which is contaminated by 125 mg/kg of phenanthrene to analyze decomposition rate of phenanthrene in modified Fenton reaction. In condition which SDS was injected 30 mM, decomposition rate of phenanthrene has best efficiency as 95% and in condition which SDS was injected over 30 mM, decomposition rate is lower than SDS 30 mM because SDS enacted as scavenger in the system. Results which assess the change of hydrogen peroxide concentration after injecting hydrogen peroxide stabilizer showed that hydrogen peroxide concentration was 14.6995 mM so that is stabilized at Fe(II) 2 mM condition in 48 hours. On the other hand, hydrogen peroxide is not stable in Fe(III) condition. SDS concentration was fixed and iron concentration was changed 2~8 mM to find out optimize proportion between iron concentration and SDS concentration in modified Fenton reaction. Consequentially, in condition of which Fe(II) 4 mM and SDS 30 mM, reaction has the highest removal rate as 95%.

  • Objective of this research was to assess the effectiveness of the different sources of the zero-valent irons (ZVIs) on the reduction of the toxic Cr(VI) to the nonhazardous Cr(III) in an aqueous solution. The physical and chemical properties of the six ZVIs were determined. Particle size and specific surface area of the ZVIs were in the ranges of $85.55{\sim}196.46{\mu}m\;and\;0.055{\sim}0.091m^2/g$, respectively. Most of the ZVIs contained Fe greater than 98% except for J (93%) and PU (88%). Reduction efficiencies of the ZVI for Cr(VI) reduction were varied with kinds of ZVIs. The J and PU ZVIs reduced 100% and 98% of Cr(VI) in the aqueous solution, respectively, within 3 hrs of reaction. However, PA, F, Sand J1 reduced 74, 65, 29 and 11% of Cr(VI), respectively, after 48 hrs. The pH of the reacting solution was rapidly increased from 3 to $4.34{\sim}9.04$ within 3 hrs. The oxidation-reduction potential (Eh) of the reacting solution was dropped from 600 to 319 mV within 3 hrs following addition of ZVIs to the Cr(VI) contaminated water. The capability of ZVIs for Cr(VI) reduction was the orders of PU > J > PA > F > S > J1, which coincided with the capacities to increase the pH and decrease the redox potentials. Results suggested that the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) was derived from the oxidation of the ZVI in the aqueous solution.

  • The aerobic oxidation of the Fe(II) complex of 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, [Fe(cyclam)$(CH_3CN)_2](ClO_4)_2$, in MeCN in the presence of a few drops of $HClO_4$ leads to low spin Fe(III) species [Fe(cyclam)$(CH_3CN)_2](ClO_4)_3$. The Fe(III) cyclam complex is further oxidized in the air in the presence of a trace of water to produce the deep green binuclear bismacrocyclic Fe(II) complex $[Fe_2(C_{20}H_{36}N_8)(CH_3CN)_4](ClO_4)_4{\cdot}2CH_3CN$. The Fe(II) ions of the complex are six-coordinated and the bismacrocyclic ligand is extensively unsaturated. $[Fe_2(C_{20}H_{36}N_8)(CH_3CN)_4](ClO_4)_4{\cdot}2CH_3CN$ crystallizes in the monoclinic space group $P2_1/n$ with a= 13.099 (1) ${\AA}$, b= 10.930 (1) ${\AA}$, c= 17.859 (1) ${\AA}$, ${\beta}$= 95.315 $(7)^{\circ}$, and Z= 2. The structure was solved by heavy atom methods and refined anisotropically to R values of R= 0.0633 and $R_w$= 0.0702 for 1819 observed reflections with F > $4{\sigma}$ (F) measured with Mo K${\alpha}$ radiation on a CAD-4 diffractometer. The two macrocyclic units are coupled through the bridgehead carbons of ${\beta}$-diimitie moieties by a double bond. The double bonds in each macrocycle unit are localized. The average bond distances of $Fe(II)-N_{imine}$, $Fe(II)-N_{amine}$, and $Fe(II)-N_{MeCN}$ are 1.890 (5), 2.001 (5), and 1.925 (6) ${\AA}$, respectively. The complex is diamagnetic, containing two low spin Fe(II) ions in the molecule. The complex shows extremely intense charge transfer band in the near infrared at 868 nm with ${\varepsilon}$= 25,000 $M^{-1}cm^{-1}$. The complex shows a one-electron oxidation wave at +0.83 volts and two one-electron reduction waves at -0.43 and-0.72 volts vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The complex reacts with carbon monoxide in $MeNO_2$ to form carbonyl adducts, whose $v_{CO}$ value (2010 $cm^{-1}$) indicates the ${\pi}$-accepting property of the present bismacrocyclic ligand.
