Combating anaemia is a global public health challenge of the developing world. Nutritional anaemia is a serious health problem faced by Indian school children. An investigation was taken up to study the effect of non iron containing Ayurvedic preparation Sootshekhar Rasa (SR) plus Sitopaladi Churna (SC) along with iron and folic acid (IFA) for improving nutritional anaemia among adolescent school going students of Dehradun district in Northern India. The blinded, controlled randomized trial comprised of 820 adolescents anaemic students aged 11 - 18 years. The anaemic students were randomly divided into 4 groups, students of group I (control) received starch, group II, III, and IV students received daily dose of (SR 250 mg + SC 400 mg), IFA and (SR 250 mg + SC 400 mg) + IFA, respectively. All the students received treatment for 90days and were followed up for next 180days. At the end of follow-up (day 270), significant increase of haemoglobin (Hb) level from the base line was recorded in all treatment groups. The maximum gain in Hb concentration was noted in group IV (10.1 ± 0.6 g/L), which was significantly higher than any other group. There were 123 drop-outs; however, no major side effect of treatment was noted in any student. We conclude that daily dose of (SR 250 mg + SC 400 mg) along with IFA can produce sustainable improvement of nutritional anaemia in adolescent students.
The effect of in-organic chelating agents with Fe(II) and Fe(III) in modified Fenton was evaluated to degradation BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene). Citric acid and pyrophosphate were used in experimentals and an optimum chelating agent for BTEX degradation was determined. In $H_2O_2$/Fe(III)/citric acid, degradation of BTEX was decreased when concentration of citric acid was increased. In $H_2O_2$/Fe(III)/pyrophosphate, degradation of BTEX was increased when concentration of pyrophosphate was increased and degradation for BTEX was relatively high compared with $H_2O_2$/Fe(III)/citric acid. In $H_2O_2$/Fe(II)/chelating agents, degradation for BTEX was high and pH variation was minimized when molar ratio of Fe(II) and citric acid was 1:1. Optimum molar concentration of Fe(II), citric acid and $H_2O_2$ were 7 mM, 7mM and 500 mM for degradation of 100 mg/L of benzene to obtain best efficiency of $H_2O_2$, least precipitation of iron and best degradation.
In this study, iron(III)-2,4-dihydroxysalophen chloride (Fe(2,4-DHSalophen)Cl), has been synthesized by combination of 2,4-dihydroxysalophen (2,4-DHSalophen) with $FeCl_2$ in a solvent system. This complex combination was characterized using UV-vis and IR spectroscopies. Subsequently, the interaction between native calf thymus deoxyribonucleic acid (ct-DNA) and Fe(2,4-DHSalophen)Cl, was investigated in 10 mM Tris/HCl buffer solution, pH 7.2, using UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies, thermal denaturation technique and viscosity measurements. From spectrophotometric titration experiments, the binding constant of Fe(2,4-DHSalophen)Cl with ct-DNA was found to be $(1.6{\pm}0.2){\times}10^3\;M^{-1}$. The fluorescence study represents the quenching effect of Fe(2,4-DHSalophen)Cl on bound ethidium bromide to DNA. The quenching process obeys linear Stern-Volmer equation in extended range of Fe(2,4-DHSalophen)Cl concentration. Thermal denaturation experiments represent the increasing melting temperature of DNA (about $4.3^{\circ}C$) due to binding of Fe(2,4-DHSalophen)Cl. These results are consistent with a binding mode dominated by interactions with the groove of ct-DNA.

An internal finishing process by the application of magnetic abrasive machining has been developed as a new technology to obtain a fine inner surface of pipe. In this paper, an abrasive circulation system was designed and manufactured. As a result, it was found that a fine inner surface abrasive of pipe was available by the use of this machining methods. The basic machining characteristics of pin-type magnetic tools were analyzed experimentally. In addition, the experimental results show that we can realize that pin-type magnetic tools have more machining efficiency than iron particles as magnetic tools.
Coagulation/precipitation process has been widely used for the removal of phosphate within domestic wastewater. Although Fe and Al are typical coagulants used for phosphate removal, these have some shortages such as color problem and low sedimentation velocity. In this study, both Fe and Al were used to overcome the shortages caused by using single one, and anionic polymer coagulant was additionally used to enhance sedimentation velocity of the precipitate formed. Batch experiments using a jar test were conducted with real wastewater, which was an effluent of the second sedimentation tank in domestic wastewater treatment plant. Response Surface Methodology was used to examine the responsibility of each parameter on phosphate removal as well as to optimize the dosage of the three coagulants. Economic analysis was also done on the basis of selling prices of the coagulants in the field. Phosphate removal efficiency of Fe(III) was 30% higher than those of Fe(II). Considering chemical price, optimum dosage for achieving residual phosphate concentration below 0.2 mg/L were determined to be 18.14 mg/L of Fe(III), 2.60 mg/L of Al, and 1.64 mg/L of polymer coagulant.

Legacy waste from the decommissioned A-1 nuclear power plant in the Slovak Republic is scheduled for immobilisation within a tailored alkali borosilicate glass formulation, as part of ongoing site cleanup. The aqueous durability and characterisation of a simulant glass wasteform for Chrompik III legacy waste, was investigated, including dissolution experiments up to 112 days (90℃, ASTM Type 1 water). The wasteform was an amorphous, light green glassy product, with no observed phase separation or crystalline inclusions. Aqueous leach testing revealed a suitably durable product over the timescale investigated, comparing positively to other simulant nuclear waste glasses and vitreous products tested under similar conditions. Iron and titanium rich precipitates were observed to form at the surface of monolithic samples during leaching, with the formation of an alkali deficient alteration layer behind these at later ages. Overall this glass appears to perform well, and in line with expectations for this chemistry, although longer-term testing would be required to predict overall durability. This work will contribute to developing confidence in the disposability of vitrified Chrompik legacy wastes.

To better understand the permeability of uranium sandstone, improve the leaching rate of uranium, and explore the change law of pore structure characteristics and blocking mechanism during leaching, we systematically analyzed the microstructure of acid-leaching uranium sandstone. We investigated the variable rules of pore structure characteristics based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results showed the following: (1) The uranium concentration change followed the exponential law during uranium deposits acid leaching. After 24 h, the uranium leaching rate reached 50%. The uranium leaching slowed gradually over the next 4 days. (2) Combined with the regularity of porosity variation, Stages I and II included chemical plugging controlled by surface reaction. Stage I was the major completion phase of uranium displacement with saturation precipitation of calcium sulfate. Stage II mainly precipitated iron (III) oxide-hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide. Stage III involved physical clogging controlled by diffusion. (3) In the three stages of leaching, the permeability of the leaching solution changed with the pore structure, which first decreased, then increased, and then decreased.
This paper presents the solid-state synthesis of insoluble Prussian blue (Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3·xH2O, PB) in a ball mill, utilizing the fundamental components of PB. Solid-state synthesis offers several advantages, such as being solvent-free, quantitative, and easily scalable for industrial production. Traditionally, the solid-state synthesis of PB has been limited to the reaction between iron(II/III) ions and hexacyanoferrate(II/III) complex ions, essentially an extension of the solution-based coprecipitation method to solid-state reaction. Taking a bottom-up approach, a reaction is designed where the reactants consist of the basic building blocks of PB: Fe2+ ions and CN- ions. The reaction, with a molar ratio of Fe2+ and CN- corresponding to 1:2.8, yields PB, while a ratio of 1:6.6 results in a mixture of potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) (K4Fe(CN)6), potassium chloride (KCl), and potassium cyanide (KCN). This synthetic approach holds promise for environmentally friendly methods to synthesize multimetallic PB with maximum entropy in nearly quantitative yield.

In this study physicochemical characteristics and stability of various manganese coated sands (MCS) prepared with different methods were evaluated. In addition, removal efficiencies of As(III) by each MCS were compared. Four different MCSs were used; B-MCS prepared by baking method, W&D-MCS prepared by wetting and dry method, NMCS prepared during the water treatment process and Birm which is a commercial MCS widely used for the removal iron and manganese. The manganese content in each MCS was following order: Birm (63,120 mg/kg) > N-MCS (10,400 mg/kg) >W&D-MCS (5,080 mg/kg) > B-MCS (2,220 mg/kg). Birm showed the least solubility (% basis) in acidic conditions. As(III) oxidation efficiency of B-MCS was continuously increased as the solution pH decreased. While As(III) oxidation efficiency of N-MCS and Birm was minimum around neutral pH. The increased As(III) oxidation efficiency above neutral pH for N-MCS and Birm could be due to the competitive adsorption of $Mn^{2+}$, which was produced from reduction of $MnO_2$, onto the surface of aluminum and manganese oxides.
The quantitative separations of a mixture containing equal amounts of each cation such as Mn(Ⅱ), Cr(Ⅲ), V(Ⅴ), Cu(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), and Fe(Ⅲ) are carried out by the elution through $35cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of cation exchange resin, $Dowex 50w{\times}12$. The eluents are a mixture of 0.6 M sodium chloride and 0.1 M sodium tartrate (pH = 2.00 and 4.50) for Fe(Ⅲ), V(Ⅴ), Cu(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ) and Co(Ⅱ), and a mixture of 3 M sodium chloride and 0.1 M sodium tartrate (pH = 4.50) or a mixture of 0.7 M sodium chloride and 0.5 M sodium oxalate (pH = 4.50 and 5.00) for Mn(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ). The subsidiary cations in a standard iron mixture such as V(Ⅴ), Cu(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ) are separated together from the large amount of Fe(Ⅲ) through $15cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of the resin, $Dowex 1{\times}8$, by elution with the eluent of 4.0 M hydrochloric acid. A small amount of Fe(Ⅲ), however, is eluted together with Cu(Ⅱ). V(Ⅴ), Ni(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ) eluted together are separated quantitatively through $10cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of the resin,$Dowex 50w{\times}12$. Cu (Ⅱ) and a small amount of Fe(Ⅲ) are separated quantitatively through $10cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of the resin, $Dowex 50w{\times}12$, by the elution with a mixture of 0.6 M sodium chloride and 0.1 M sodium tartrate (pH = 2.00 and 4.50) as an eluent. By the conditions obtained in the separations of the standard iron mixture, Fe(Ⅲ) and all of the subsidiary cations in steel are quantitatively separated.
