In this work, we propose detection method for ionosphere storm that occurs locally using widespread GNSS reference stations. For ionosphere storm detection, we compare ionosphere condition with other reference stations and estimate direction of movement based on ionosphere time variation. The method use carrier phase measurement of dual frequency, for accuracy and precision of test statistics, are evaluated with multiple GNSS reference stations data.

The high ionospheric spatial gradient during ionospheric storm is the most concern when applying GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) augmentation systems for aircraft precision approach. Since the ionospheric gradient level depends on geographical location as well as the storm, understanding the ionospheric gradient statistics over a specific regional area is necessary for operating the augmentation systems. This paper compares three ionosphere gradient computation methods, direct differentiation between two receivers' ionospheric delay signal for a common satellite, derivation from a grid ionosphere map, and derivation from a plate ionosphere map. The plate map method provides a good indication on the gradient variation behavior over a regional area with limited number of GNSS receivers. The residual analysis for the ionosphere storm detection is discussed as well.

High ionospheric spatial gradient during ionospheric storm is most concern for the landing approach with GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) augmentation systems. In case of the GBAS (Ground-Based Augmentation System), the ionospheric storm causes sudden increase of the ionospheric delay difference between a ground facility and a user (aircraft), and the aircraft position error increases significantly. Since the ionosphere behavior and the storm effect depend on geographic location, understanding the ionospheric storm behavior at specific regional area is crucial for the GNSS augmentation system development and implementation. Korea Aerospace Research Institute and collaborating universities have been developing an integrity monitoring test bed for GBAS research and for future regional augmentation system development. By using the dense GPS (Global Positioning System) networks in Korea, a regional ionosphere map is constructed for finding detailed aspect of the ionosphere variation. Preliminary analysis on the ionospheric gradient variation during a recent storm period is performed and the results are discussed.

Ionospheric signal delay is a critical factor for precision differential GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite Systems) applications such as GBAS(Ground-Based Augmentation System) and SBAS (Satellite-Based Augmentation System). Most concern is the impact of the ionospheric storm caused by the interaction between Solar and geomagnetic activities. After brief description of the ionosphere and ionospheric storm, ionospheric models for SBAS are discussed. History of recent ionospheric storms is reviewed and their impact on GNSS is discussed. In order to support Korean GNSS augmentation system development, a preliminary study on the regional ionosphere performed. A software tool for computing regional ionospheric maps is being developed, and initial results during a recent storm period is analyzed.

Ionospheric storms, caused by the interaction between Solar and geomagnetic activities, may degrade the differential GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite Systems) performance significantly, and the importance of the ionospheric storm research is growing for the GBAS(Ground-Based Augmentation System) and SBAS(Satellite-Based Augmentation System) development. In order to support Korean GNSS augmentation system development, a software tool for analyzing the regional ionosphere is being developed and its preliminary results are discussed. After brief description of the ionosphere and ionospheric storm, the research topics on the GBAS applications are discussed. The need for ionospheric spatial gradient analysis is described and some results on the ionospheric spatial gradient during recent storm periods are discussed.

The ionospheric strom evolution process was monitored during the 18 August 2003 magnetic strom over China, through inversion of the ionospheric electron density from GPS observations. The temporal and spatial variations of the ionosphere were analysed as a time series of ionospheric electron density profiles. Results show that the main ionospheric effects of the storm over China under consideration are: the positive storm phase effect usually happens in the low latitudinal ionospheric; the negative storm phase effect occurs in the middle latitude, and the equatorial anomaly structure can be found as well.
Challenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) satellite magnetic data are used to investigate the latitudinal variation of the storm-time meso-scale field-aligned currents by defining a new metric called the FAC range. Three major geomagnetic storm events are considered. Alongside SymH, the possible contributions from solar wind dynamic pressure and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) $B_Z$ are also investigated. The results show that the new metric predicts the latitudinal variation of FACs better than previous studies. As expected, the equatorward expansion and poleward retreat are observed during the storm main phase and recovery phase respectively. The equatorward shift is prominent on the northern duskside, at ${\sim}58^{\circ}$ coinciding with the minimum SymH and dayside at ${\sim}59^{\circ}$ compared to dawnside and nightside respectively. The latitudinal shift of FAC range is better correlated to IMF $B_Z$ in northern hemisphere dusk-dawn magnetic local time (MLT) sectors than in southern hemisphere. The FAC range latitudinal shifts responds better to dynamic pressure in the duskside northern hemisphere and dawnside southern hemisphere than in southern hemisphere dusk sector and northern hemisphere dawn sector respectively. FAC range exhibits a good correlation with dynamic pressure in the dayside (nightside) southern (northern) hemispheres depicting possible electrodynamic similarity at day-night MLT sectors in the opposite hemispheres.
In this study, we documented the midlatitude F2-layer response to five strong geomagnetic storms with minimum Dst < -150 nT that occurred in solar minimum years using hourly values of the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2) from four ionosondes located in different hemispheres. The results were very limited, but they illustrated some peculiarities in the behavior of the F2-layer storm. During equinox, the characteristic ionospheric disturbance patterns over the Japanese station Wakkanai in the Northern Hemisphere and the Australian station Mundaring in the Southern Hemisphere were consistent with the well-known scenario by $Pr{\ddot{o}}lss$ (1993); however, during a December solstice magnetic storm, both stations did not observe any noticeable positive ionospheric disturbances. Over the "near-pole" European ionosonde, clear positive ionospheric storms were not observed during the events, but the "far-from-pole" Southern Hemisphere station Port Stanley showed prominent enhancements in F2-layer peak electron density in all magnetic storms except one. No event produced noticeable nighttime enhancements in foF2 over all four ionosondes.
The accuracy and integrity of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) can be improved by using GNSS augmentation systems. Large ionospheric spatial gradient, during ionosphere storm, is a major threat for using GNSS augmentation systems by increasing the spatial decorrelation between a reference system and users. Ionosphere decorrelation behavior can be analyzed by using dual frequency GPS data. GNSS receivers have their own biases, called inter-frequency bias (IFB) between dual(P1 and P2) frequencies and they must be accurately estimated before computing ionosphere delays. GPS network data in Korea is used to compute each receiver's IFB, and their estimation accuracy and variability are analyzed. IFB estimation methodology to apply for ionosphere gradient analysis is discussed.
Radio waves including GPS signals, various TV communications, and radio broadcasting can be disturbed by a strong solar storm, which may occur due to solar flares and produce an ionospheric delay anomaly in the ionosphere according to the change of total electron content. Electron density irregularities can cause deep signal fading, frequently known as ionospheric scintillation, which can result in the positioning error using GPS signal. This paper proposes a detection algorithm for the ionosphere delay anomaly during a solar storm by using multi-reference stations. Different TEC grid which has irregular electron density was applied above one reference station. Then the ionospheric delay in zenith direction applied different TEC will show comparatively large ionospheric zenith delay due to the electron irregularity. The ionospheric slant delay applied an elevation angle at reference station was analyzed to detect the ionospheric delay anomaly that can result in positioning error. A simulation test was implemented and a proposed detection algorithm using data logged by four reference stations was applied to detect the ionospheric delay anomaly compared to a criterion.
