The article provides a review of the research results obtained during of more than 20 years concerning using the gaseous radiochemical method (GRCM) for detecting of ionizing radiation. This method based on threshold nuclear reactions with production of radioactive noble gas which does not interact with the materials of gaseous tract. The applications of GRCM in the diagnostics of neutrinos, neutrons, charged particles, thermonuclear plasma thermometry, and the study of the structure and dynamics of astrophysical objects, position-sensitive dosimetry of neutron targets with accelerator driving, spatial distribution of the fast neutron flux density in a nuclear reactor allowing the transformation of longitudinal coordinate of neutron flux distribution into a temporal distribution of the radiochemical gas decay counting rate ("barcode" semblance) and measurement of bombarding particles spectra are described. Experimental testing of the described technologies was made on the neutron target driven with the linear proton accelerator of Institute for Nuclear Research of Russian Academy of Sciences (INR RAS).
It has long been recognized that exposure to low levels of toxic chemicals could have beneficial effects, such as increased resistance to related chemicals or stimulation of growth or development. The notion of radiation hormesis, that exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation could produce beneficial effects, developed seriously in the late 1950’s, and was, to most radiation scientists, incredible. This was due in pan to the then prevailing ideas of radiobiological mechanisms, in part to the sweeping generalizations made by the leading proponents of the radiation hormesis concept, and in pan to the many failures to confirm reports of beneficial effects. More recent understanding of the mechanisms of radiation damage and repair, and discoveries of induction of gene expression by radiation and other genotoxic agents [the adaptive response] make it seem inevitable that under suitable conditions, irradiation will produce beneficial effects.
The influence of adding iodine as a contrast substance to elevate radiation in a tumor is studied using simulation techniques of Monte-Carlo. The study is carried on a brain cancer by adopting an unsophisticated head phantom. The ionizing radiation source is an external beam of x-rays with energy range of a few tens of keV. The expected radiation dose increment due to adding the iodine is investigated by comparing the radiation in the tumor after and before adding the iodine and calculating the ratio between the two doses. Several concentrations of the contrast substance are used to quantify its impact. The change of the dose increment with the source energy is also examined. It is found that the radiation elevation in the tumor tends to saturate with increasing the iodine concentration, and for the studied domain of energies (30 keV-100 keV), the radiation dose enhancement factors (RDEF) for the different iodine concentrations (1%-9%) show peaked curves, with the peak occurring between 60 keV and 70 keV. For the highest concentration studied, 9%, the peak value is almost 7.

Background: Titanium is the most widely used metal for bone integration, especially for cancer patients receiving ionizing radiation. This study aimed to investigate the amifostine administration that would reduce the effects of radiation on bone healing and osseointegration in rat models. Objectives: It is aimed that the application of amifostine in rats receiving radiotherapy treatment will reduce the negative effects of ionizing radiation on the bone. Methods: Thirty-five adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into one healthy and four experimental groups. In three consecutive days, two experimental groups of rats (AMF-RT-IMP and RT-IMP) were exposed to radiation (15 Gy/3 fractions of 5 Gy each). Then the titanium implants were inserted into the left tibia. Before the radiotherapy process, a 200 mg/kg dose of amifostine (AMF) was administered to the rats in the AMF-IMP and AMF-RT-IMP groups. Twenty-eight days after the screw implant, all rats were sacrificed, and their blood samples and tibia bones were collected for analysis. Results: The results indicated an accelerated bone formation and a more rapid healing process in the screw implants in the AMF-IMP, AMF-RT-IMP, and AMF-RT groups than in the RT-IMP group. Also, bone-implant contact area measurement and inflammation decreased with amifostine treatment in the implants subjected to irradiation (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results obtained in the present study suggested that amifostine prevents the losses of bone minerals, bone integrity, and implant position from ionizing-radiation when given before exposure.
AT cells exhibit defective cell cycle regulation following DNA damage. Previous studies have shown that induction of p53 and p2i proteins are delayed in response to ionizing rad iation, resulting in the failure of G1/S checkpoint in AT cells. In this study, further investigation of the molecular mechanisms underlying G1/S phase progression in AT cells was conducted. Exponentially growing normal and AT cells were exposed to 2 Gly of ionizing radiation and the expression levels and functional activities of Rb and E2F-1 proteins were determined. We observed overexpression of hyperphosphorylated Rb and E2F-1 proteins in AT cells, which was unaffected post-irradiation. Furthermore, gel shift assays showed that E2F-1-DNA binding was constitutive in AT cells, whereas it was inhibited in control cells following exposure to ionizing radiation. The data suggests that abnormalities in the function of Rb and E2F-1 proteins may also be responsible for the failure of AT cells to arrest in the G1/S checkpoint in response to DNA damage.

Advanced radiation applications have been widely used and extended to many fields. As a result of this fact, choosing an appropriate shielding material based on the radiation application has become vital. In this regard, the integration of elements into polymer composites has been investigated and contributed to the quantity and quality of radiation shielding materials. This study reports photon attenuation parameters and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of a novel polymer composite prepared with a matrix reinforced with three different proportions (5, 10, and 15 wt%) of niobium content. Addition of Nb dopant improves both photon attenuation and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness for the investigated composites. Therefore, Nb(15%) polymer composite with highest concentration has been found to be the best absorber for ionizing and non-ionizing radiations. Consequently, the performed analyzes provide evidences that the prepared Nb-reinforced polymer composite could be effectively used as photon radiation attenuator and electromagnetic shielding material.

As robotics become more sophisticated, there are a growing number of generic systems being used for routine tasks in nuclear environments to reduce risk to radiation workers. The nuclear sector has called for more commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) devices and components to be used in preference to nuclear specific hardware, enabling robotic operations to become more affordable, reliable, and abundant. To ensure reliable operation in nuclear environments, particularly in high-gamma facilities, it is important to quantify the tolerance of electronic systems to ionizing radiation. To deliver their full potential to end-users, mobile robots require sophisticated autonomous behaviors and sensing, which requires significant computational power. A popular choice of computing system, used in low-cost mobile robots for nuclear environments, is the UP Core single board computer. This work presents estimates of the total ionizing dose that the UP Core running the Robot Operating System (ROS) can withstand, through gamma irradiation testing using a Co-60 source. The units were found to fail on average after 111.1 ± 5.5 Gy, due to faults in the on-board power management circuitry. Its small size and reasonable radiation tolerance make it a suitable candidate for robots in nuclear environments, with scope to use shielding to enhance operational lifetime.

Ikaros, a transcription factor containing zinc-finger motif, has known as a critical regulator of hematopoiesis in immune system. Ikaros protein modulates the transcription of target genes via binding to the regulatory elements of the genes promoters. However the regulatory function of Ikaros in other organelle except nuclear remains to be determined. This study explored radiation-induced modulatory function of Ikaros in cytoplasm. The results showed that Ikaros protein lost its DNA binding ability after LDIR (low-dose ionizing radiation) exposure. Cell fractionation and Western blot analysis showed that Ikaros protein was translocated into cytoplasm from nuclear by LDIR. This was confirmed by immunofluorescence assay. We identified Autotaxin as a novel protein which potentially interacts with Ikaros through in vitro protein-binding screening. Co-immunoprecipitation assay revealed that Ikaros and Autotaxin are able to bind each other. Autotaxin is a crucial enzyme generating lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a phospholipid mediator, which has potential regulatory effects on immune cell growth and motility. Our results indicate that LDIR potentially regulates immune system via protein-protein interaction of Ikaros and Autotaxin.
