  • The ionic-polymer-metal-composite actuators have the best merit for bio-mimetic locomotion because of their large bending performance. Especially, they have the advantage for mimicking a fish-like motion because IPMCs are useful to be actuated in water. So we have developed IPMC actuators with multiple electrodes for realization of biomimetic motion. Generally, the IPMC actuator has been fabricated in electroless plating technique, while it needs very long fabrication time and shows poor repeatability in the actuation performance owing to the variables in chemical fabrication process. Therefore, the novel fabrication methods were investigated by combining electroless plating and electroplating techniques capable of patterning precisely. On the whole, two different methods were compared and analyzed with similar thickness level of Platinum electrodes. Present results show that mixing chemical reduction and electroplating can be a promising candidate for electrode patterning.

SWCNT/Nafion 복합체의 분산능 향상을 통한 IPMC의 기계적 특성 향상 (Improvement of Mechanical Properties of IPMC through Developing a Degree of Dispersion of SWCNT/Nafion Composite)

  • Many researchers are recently studying about Electroactive polymer(EAP). But it has a physical limitation, because of property of material. Carbon nanotube(CNT) is known as the promising material which has excellent electro-mechanical characteristics and is mostly defect-free. It is expected that a successful synthesis of CNT and Nafion known as a primary material for IPMC would make a great improvement on its electro-mechanic feature. This study focuses on the method of synthesis of CNT with Nafion which improves electro-mechanical characteristic. To come up with mechanical dispersion with Nafion and Isopropyl Alcohol(IPA), we dispersed Single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs). For a uniformly layer of CNT, we used a spray gun on a hot plate by a simplified method. We fabricated a disperse SWCNT/Nafion composite uniformly. Through the use of the E-beam evaporator to form an uniform electrode layer, we consummated the IPMC actuator. This result shows improving 1.5 times mechanical properties about driving force in IPMC.

SDRE controller considering Multi Observer applied to nonlinear IPMC model

  • Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) is an electroactive polymer (EAP) and a promising candidate actuator for various potential applications mainly due to its flexible, low voltage/power requirements, small and compact design, and lack of moving parts. Although widely used in industry, this material requires accurate numerical models and knowledge of optimal control methods. This paper presents State-Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) approach as one of rapidly emerging methodologies for designing nonlinear controllers. Additionally, the present paper describes a novel method of Multi HGO Observer design. In the proposed design, the calculated position of the IPMC strip accurately tracks the target position, which is illustrated by the experiments. Numerical results and comparison with experimental data are presented and the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified in experiments.

  • The two major obstacles in the application of IPMC to flapping actuators operated in the air are solvent loss and actuation force. In this paper, solvent loss of various IPMCs made of Nafion$^{TM}$117(183$\mu$m thickness) has been experimentally investigated to find out the best combination of cation and solvent for minimal solvent loss in IPMCs and higher actuation force. For this purpose. experiments for the internal solvent loss measurement of IMPCs have been conducted for various combinations of cation and solvent. From the experiments, it was found that heavy water showed improvement in the operating time up to more than two minutes. in the tip force measurement of IPMCs, it was found that smaller and thicker IPMCs produced larger tip forces. However, the shorter IPMCs generated reduced actuation displacements and created flapping motion with decreased natural frequency. For the design of flapping device actuated by 5mm wide, 10mm long, 0.2mm thick IPMCs were used in the stacked form. Since the actuation force is a few gram-force, we stacked five IPMCs to improve actuation force. To amply the actuation force, rack-and-pin ion type hinge was used for the flapping device and insect (Cicadidae) wing was attached to the stacked IPMC actuator. In the flapping test, the device could generate flapping angle of 15$^{\circ}$ at 6Hz excitation by 2.5 voltage square wave input.

The Performance of Nafion-Based IPMC Actuators Containing Polypyrrole/Alumina Composite Fillers

  • A polypyrrole (PPy)/alumina composite filler prepared via in-situ polymerization of pyrrole on alumina particles was incorporated into $Nafion^{(R)}$ to improve the performance of ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators. The IPMCs with the pristine PPy without alumina support did not show bending displacements superior to that of the bare Nafion-based IPMC, except at a high PPy content of 4 wt%. This result was attributed to the low redox efficiency of the PPy alone in the IPMC and may have also been related to the modulus of the IPMC. However, at the optimized filler contents, the cyclic displacement of the IPMCs bearing the PPy/alumina filler was 2.2 times larger than that of the bare Nafion-based IPMC under an applied AC potential of 3 Vat 1 Hz. Even under a low AC potential of 1.5 V at 1 Hz, the displacement of the PPy/alumina-based IPMCs was a viable level of performance for actuator applications and was 2.7 times higher than that of the conventional Nafion-based IPMC. The generated blocking force was also improved with the PPy/aiumina composite filler. The greatly enhanced performance and the low-voltage-operational characteristic of the IPMCs bearing the PPy/alumina filler were attributed to the synergic effects of the neighboring alumina moiety near the PPy moiety involving electrochemical redox reactions.

  • This paper presents the design and dynamic model of the finger exoskeleton actuated by Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMC) to assist a tip pinch task. Although this exoskeleton will be developed to assist 3 degree-of-freedom motion of each finger, it has been currently made to perform the tip pinch task using 1 degree-of-freedom mechanism as the first step. The six layers of IPMC were stacked in parallel to increase the low actuation force of IPMC. In addition, the finger dummy was manufactured to evaluate the performance of the finger exoskeleton. The pinch task experiments, which were performed on the finger dummy with the developed exoskeleton, showed that the pinch force close to the desired level was obtained. Moreover, the dynamic model of the exoskeleton and finger dummy was developed in order to perform the various analyses for the improvement of the exoskeleton.

전기왜곡성 폴리우레탄 엑츄에이터의 특성 평가 (Characterization of Electrostrictive Polyurethane Films for Micro-Actuators)

  • For the purpose of applying to micro-actuator, thermal properties and displacement of electrostrictive polyurethane(PU) elastomers have been measured. In order to understand an effect of PU component, crosslinking agent are controlled by 0.5 wt% and 1 wt%. DMPA and anther chain extenders were used. PU sample that chain extenders are DMPA is added NaOH for comprehension of effect of ionic groups. The deposited electrode sire on PU films is equal to acrylic holder size when the displacement was measured. Dynamic response according to frequency, displacement and recovery time according to PU thickness were measured. 1 wt% crosslinking agent contents PU samples have higher displacement and lower recovery time than 0.5 wt% crosslinking agent contents PU. If the PU thickness is increased, the actuating voltage for generating of same displacement is increased, too.

  • 단일벽 탄소나노튜브와 전기전도성 폴리머로 구성된 복합재 엑츄에이터의 변형율-전압간의 관계식이 유도되었으며, 얇은 복합재 필름 형태의 엑츄에이터의 전기기계적인 작동을 수식화하기 위해서 전기화학적 이온 접근법을 사용하였다. 이 방법은 엑츄에이터의 작동에 대한 이해를 쉽게 할 수 있다. 실험결과와 계산결과는 잘 일치한다. 이상적으로 잘 배열된 단일벽 탄소나노튜브 엑츄에이터는 좋은 반응특성과 작동력을 나타내었다. 작동변위는 나노튜브와 기지인 폴리머의 영향을 받으며, 단일벽 탄소나노튜브는 양의 전압에서는 기지를 보강하며 음의 전압에서는 기지를 수축하게 하는 영향을 미친다. 나노튜브의 배열을 곧게하고, 적절한 전해질과 전압을 선택하면 엑츄에이터의 성능을 최적화시킬 수 있다.

방사선을 이용한 전기 활성 PAAc/PVA/PEG 하이드로겔 소프트 액추에이터의 제조 및 구동 특성 분석 (Synthesis of Electroactive PAAc/PVA/PEG Hydrogel Soft Actuator by Radiation Processing and Their Dynamic Characteristics)

  • 지난 수십 년 동안, 외부 자극에 대한 응답성이 우수하면서도 인체에 적용할 수 있는 소프트 액추에이터 개발을 위한 많은 노력이 이어졌다. 본 연구에서는 동역학적 정밀 제어가 가능한 의료용 소프트 액추에이터를 개발하기 위해, 유해한 화학적 첨가제나 개시제 없이 방사선을 이용하여 전기 자극 반응성과 물리적 특성이 우수한 3차원 가교 구조의 poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) 하이드로겔을 합성하였다. 방사선 조사 후, 모든 하이드로겔은 75% 이상의 겔 분율을 나타내었고, 표면 반사 적외선 분광법을 통해 PAAc/PVA/PEG 하이드로겔이 성공적으로 합성되었음을 확인하였다. 또한 PAAc/PVA/PEG 하이드로겔의 겔 분율, 평형 수분 함량, 압축 강도를 측정하여 감마선의 총 조사 선량과 구성 성분의 함량비 조절에 따른 하이드로겔의 물리적 특성 변화를 확인하였다. 조사된 감마선의 선량이 증가하거나 poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA)의 함량이 많을수록 PAAc/PVA/PEG 하이드로겔은 높은 가교 밀도와 우수한 기계적 강도를 나타내었다. 또한 PAAc/PVA/PEG 하이드로겔은 3 V의 저전압에서도 전기적인 자극에 반응하였고, 전기장 하에서 이동성 이온의 움직임에 따른 하이드로겔의 밴딩 거동은 하이드로겔의 가교 밀도, 이온기의 함량, 인가 전압 및 전해질 용액의 이온 농도 등을 조절함으로써 제어할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

IPMC 작동기로 구동되는 초소형 비행체 날개의 공기흐름 조절용 ZNMF(zero-net-mass-flux) 펌프의 예비설계 및 해석 (Design and Analysis of IPMC Actuator-driven ZNMF Pump for Air Flow Control of MAV's Wing)

  • 본 논문은 초소형 비행체 날개 주위의 공기흐름 조절을 위한 IPMC 작동기로 구동되는 ZNMF 펌프의 체계적인 설계 및 해석 기법을 소개한다. IPMC는 낮은 인가전압에서 큰 굽힘 변위를 발생시키며, 공기 중에서도 작동이 가능하고, 작은 크기로 손쉽게 제작할 수 있기 때문에 소형 펌프의 작동 막으로 매우 적합한 재료이다. 본 연구에서는 수치해석 기법을 이용하여 최대 작동 체적을 발생시키는 IPMC 작동 막의 최적 형상을 찾고, 이러한 최적형상에 기초하여 슬롯을 갖는 ZNMF 펌프를 설계하였다. 이후 초소형 비행체의 비행속도, 펌프 작동 막의 구동 주파수(~ 40 Hz), 슬롯을 통과하는 공기의 속도 등을 이용하여 무차원화 된 진동수와 모멘텀 계수를 구하였고, 설계된 ZNMF 펌프가 초소형 비행체 날개의 공기흐름 조절에 적용이 가능함을 보였다.
