  • A new rhodamine B-coumarin conjugate (1) capable of recognizing both $Cu^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ using two different detection modes have been designed and synthesized. The metal ion induced optical changes of 1 were investigated in $CH_3CN-H_2O$ (1:1, v/v, HEPES 50 mM, pH = 7.0) solution. Sensor 1 exhibits selective colorimetric recognition of $Cu^{2+}$ and fluorescent recognition of $Fe^{3+}$ with UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. Moreover, both of the $Cu^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ recognition processes are observed to be barely interfered by other coexisting metal ions.

  • This study investigates an application of the Hamming network-dual extended Kalman filter (DEKF) based on pattern recognition for high accuracy state-of-charge (SOC)/capacity estimation and state-of-health (SOH) prediction at various temperatures. The averaged nine discharging/charging voltage-temperature (DCVT) patterns for ten fresh Li-Ion cells at experimental temperatures are measured as representative patterns, together with cell model parameters. Through statistical analysis, the Hamming network is applied to identify the representative pattern that matches most closely with the pattern of an arbitrary cell measured at any temperature. Based on temperature-checking process, model parameters for a representative DCVT pattern can then be applied to estimate SOC/capacity and to predict SOH of an arbitrary cell using the DEKF. This avoids the need for repeated parameter measuremet.

  • Two classes of morpholino-substitued thioacetate have been successfully synthesized and their electrochemical properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au electrode are measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The barrier property of the SAMs-modified surfaces is evaluated by using potassium ferro/ferri cyanide. The results suggest that the arenethioacetate forms higher-quality close-packed blocking monolayers in comparison with alkanethioacetate. Furthermore, it has shown that the barrier properties of these monolayers can be significantly improved by mixed SAMs formation with decanethiol. From our experimental results we find that the electron transfer reaction of $[Fe(CN)_6]^{3/4-}$ redox couple occurs predominantly through the pinholes and defects present in the SAM and both SAMs show a good and fast capacity in recognition for $Ag^+$. The morphological and elementary composition have also been examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS).

  • The complex formation between diazocalix[4]dipropyl (1) and diazocalix[4]crown-6 ether (2) with alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal ions was investigated by voltammetry. Electrochemical properties of compounds 1 and 2 and their selectivity toward metal ions were evaluated in $CH_3CN$ solution by comparison of voltammetric behaviors of two phenols in each compound. Compounds 1 and 2 showed almost same voltammetric behavior which is two irreversible oxidation peaks caused by intramolecular hydrogen bonding between two phenols in 1 and 2. While, however, upon interacting with various metal ions, 1 with two propyl ether groups showed no significant changes in voltammetry, 2 with crown ether group caused significant voltammetric changes upon the addition of $Ba^{2+}$ to 2. Their behavior is closely related to the complex formation by entrapment of metal ion into crown ether cavity, and ion-dipole interaction between metal ion and two phenolic groups in calix[4]crown-6.

  • A new rhodamine-based sensor 1 was designed and synthesized by incorporating rhodamine B and benzimidazole moieties. Sensor 1 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to $Cu^{2+}$ in $CH_3CN$-water solution (HEPES buffer, pH = 7.0) with an obvious color change from colorless to pink. Other metal ions such as $Hg^{2+}$, $Ag^+$, $Pb^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$, $Ba^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Ce^{3+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Na^+$ had no such color change and have no significant influence on $Cu^{2+}$ recognition process. The interaction of $Cu^{2+}$ and sensor 1 was proven to adopt a 1:1 binding stoichiometry and the recognition process is reversible.

  • In this paper, the peak detection algorithm was developed for the purpose of screening of the target compounds. Algorithm is divided into searching the characteristic ion and peak detection. The heuristic knowledge about analytical chemistry was applied for the searching the characteristic ion. Peak detection was accomplished in comparison with the peak identification strings and pattern strings around the retention time. Pattern strings are composed with the number which generated by pattern identification function. The variables of pattern identification function are the codes which represent the difference of two adjacent abundances Some of the free steroids were selected to demonstrate the proposed algorithm.

  • Calixpyrroles and related macrocycles are non-planer synthetic anion receptors that have attracted considerable attentions in recent years. Although the synthesis of calix[4]pyrrole (known as meso-octamethylporphyrinogen) was reported more than 100 years ago, the anion binding properties were first discovered in 1996. The simple calix[4]pyrroles can be synthesized in single step in high yield by condensation of pyrrole with acetone. The compounds showed preferential binding for halide anions including fluoride, phosphate, carboxylate, and chloride in organic media. Efforts to improve the anion affinity of calix[4]pyrrole and to enhance its selectivity have led to the synthesis of a variety of new calixpyrrole derivatives. Among the various modifications, introduction of straps on one side of the calix[4]pyrroles are the most effective. Incorporation of aromatic rings other than pyrroles also exhibited interesting binding behaviour. Introduction of signalling units as part of the strapping element enable to detect the anions on chromogenic or fluorogenic fashion. Finding of the anion transport properties across the membrane and cytotoxic effects of the calix[4]pyrroles open new window for calixpyrrole-related research. The polymer-incorporated systems have also been employed as anion complexants in solvent-solvent extraction. These old, yet easy-to-make macrocycles have well advanced more recently with the discovery of the ion-pair complexation properties. In this review, the synthetic developments and anion binding properties of calixpyrroles for the last decades will be discussed and will cover the advances in calixpyrrole chemistry.

  • Anion recognition via hydrogen-bonding interactions could be monitored with changes in UV-vis absorption spectra and in some cases easily monitored with naked eye. Urea receptors 1 and 2 connected with both an azo group and a nitrophenyl group as a signaling group for color change proved to be an efficient naked eye receptor for the fluoride ion. The anion recognition phenomena of the receptors 1 and 2 via hydrogen-bonding interactions were investigated through UV-vis absorption and $^1H$ NMR spectra.
